Brandeis School of Law About the Summer Law Institute The Summer Law Institute (SLI) is a seven-day residential program for high school students interested in the law and the legal profession. Students will learn the fundamentals of trial procedure, discuss important legal and social issues, and study how the law affects their lives. This program provides an opportunity to meet and interact with local lawyers, judges, and law professors. Throughout the week, students will be participating in workshops and mock trial practice at the U of L Brandeis School of Law, traveling to the Gene Synder United States Courthouse for trial observation and a tour, and visiting Bellarmine s campus for additional trial preparation. On Saturday, local judges will preside over a mock trial in which students act as attorneys and witnesses. Family and friends are invited to attend the trial and closing ceremony in the Allen Courtroom at the Brandeis School of Law. This year s sessions include: State & Federal Court Systems Careers in the Law Trial Advocacy Professional Responsibility & Ethics Formal Dinner with Members of the Bar The SLI has previously received the National Association of Bar Executives and LexisNexis Community & Educational Outreach Award and every year, receives high praise from students, parents, and local practitioners who interact with the group. The SLI seeks a diverse class of students willing to perform at their highest level. This is a unique opportunity and the offer to participate is extended to only the most qualified of students. Sunday, June 10 - Saturday, June 16, 2018 Application Instructions Students wishing to attend the Summer Law Institute (SLI) must complete and sign the following forms and provide a personal statement. Application Checklist: Form A Student Application Form B Teacher/Counselor Recommendation Form C Parent/Guardian Permission Form D Scholarship Application Personal Statement Additional Information (optional) Scholarships & Tuition: A limited number of scholarships are available based on demonstrated financial need. Only students intending to apply for a scholarship need complete Form D. Because the SLI is funded by the Louisville Bar Foundation, tuition is only $200 per student and is due upon acceptance. Personal Statement: Students must submit a 250-300 word personal statement. The statement should tell us why the student is interested in the law and attending the SLI. Students should distinguish themselves by providing insight into goals, capabilities, and background. The essay may also include details about personal strengths, interests, and any description of circumstances affecting academic performance. The personal statement will be considered as a writing sample and should therefore be closely reviewed for grammar, spelling, and coherence. The essay must be typed and double-spaced. Additional Information: Students are welcome to provide any other information that may be helpful in evaluating the application. This may include major courses of study, resumes, extracurricular activities, and community involvement. Application Deadline: All application materials must be received by Wednesday, April 11, 2018. A limited number of need-based scholarships will be available for this program. Please indicate by checking this box if this student would be unable to attend this program without a scholarship. I/we agree to attend a mandatory for parents/guardians AND students on Wednesday, May 30, 2018, at 6:30 p.m. at the Bar Center, 600 West Main Street, Suite 110, Louisville, KY. The undersigned parent/guardian of (student s name) gives permission for the above-named student to participate in the Summer Law Institute. I/we understand that the student is required to reside in the assigned dormitory facility at the University of Louisville for the entire program and that the student may not leave program activities at any time. In consideration of the student being permitted to participate in this program, the undersigned agrees that the, Louis D. Brandeis School of Law, University of Louisville,, Louisville Bar Foundation, their respective agents, directors, chaperones, and employees ( Released Parties ) shall be released and held harmless and indemnified by the undersigned from liability for any damages for death, bodily injury, or property damage that might occur during the Summer Law Institute arising directly or indirectly from the negligent or intentional acts or omissions of the student. I further agree to assume liability and responsibility for any property damage caused, either directly or indirectly, by the above-named student while he/she participates in the Summer Law Institute and shall indemnify Released Parties from and against any liability that might ensue by reason of the student s actions. I do further agree that the Released Parties reserve the right to terminate the participation of the student for failure to behave and act in accordance with the Summer Law Institute s rules and code of conduct, for failure to follow the instructions and directions of the Released Parties, or for any acts of conduct of the student deemed to be detrimental to or incompatible with the interest, harmony, comfort, or welfare of others participating in the Summer Law Institute. If the participation of the student is terminated, no funds will be returned, and the student will be sent home at my expense.
