Note: applications for electives in a non-base hospital could take 6-10 weeks to process (so plan ahead)

CORE ROTATION INFORMATION Core rotations are directed toward the student developing clinical competence (knowledge, procedures/skills, clinical problem-solving, and professional attitudes and behaviors) in the diagnosis and management of fundamental medical problems associated with the particular medical discipline. All core rotations have a protocol and an ANGEL course. All six PCAC rotations have an ANGEL group. Rotation protocols can be found in your class ANGEL group. Information on specific rotation requirements (shift requirements, exams, logs, etc.) can be found in the rotation protocol. Be sure to familiarize yourself with these rotation requirements! A student will have access to the rotation ANGEL course at the ENCORE ONLINE PATIENT ENCOUNTER SYSTEM All core rotations except psychiatry and emergency medicine utilize this online patient encounter logging system. The ENCORE website is http://encore2.com.msu.edu Students will use their Echt account username and password to access this online system. Your log-in is the same as what you use to access the computers in the resource center at your preclerkship site. Be certain to visit your site s resource center to make sure your Echt account is functional before leaving your site. Each core rotation ANGEL course contains an ENCORE folder. Please review the contents of this folder prior to the start of each rotation. Please read the ENCORE protocol found in your class ANGEL group as well as in your core rotation ANGEL course so you are familiar with your rotation logging requirements and expectations. PCAC SPECIALTY/CHOICE LIST All students complete a PCAC Specialty and Choice experience during their 6- month Primary Care Ambulatory Clerkship. The choice and specialty rotation can not be from the same category. For a specific rotation to qualify: It must be approximately 40% ambulatory in nature (four half-days per week in an office or other outpatient setting). Rotations in Radiology and Emergency Medicine are not allowed. Your Specialty rotation must be completed using resources available through your base hospital. Your Choice rotation may be completed using resources available through any base hospital; however, the student must return to his/her assigned base hospital for all scheduled didactic sessions. The following list provides examples of rotations that would meet these requirements, but it is not inclusive. Students should check with their PCAC Coordinator concerning rotation availability. Sports Medicine is enrolled based on the Training Physician s Board Certification. 4

TWO-WEEK ROTATION OPTIONS Allowed Two-week rotations in the following services are allowed. SURVIVAL POINTS FOR CLERKSHIP REQUIREMENTS Contact appropriate clerkship staff when you have questions Read all protocols (general student and course) Understand all rotation requirements (logs, exams, evaluations, deadlines, etc.) Attend all orientation sessions (College and Hospital) Check your on-line schedule often it is your responsibility to ensure that your schedule matches your university enrollment Be pro-active no one will be holding your hand You cannot change CORE rotations 30-day advance application approval required (applies to a rotation add, change or cancel) You must notify the hospital s DME office (verbally or in writing) if cancelling an elective/selective rotation Three maximum (selective/elective) rotation changes per semester allowed 4 two-week elective and 1 two-week selective rotation maximums allowed Seek advanced permission (for any reason) to be absent from a rotation by completing the on-line excused absence form Time off for board prep is allowed only during out-time and must be scheduled as vacation You will be pulled from your rotation if you are not compliant for any reason (e.g. immunizations, ACLS, BBP, etc.) The Clerkship Program is a full-time commitment. Nonclerkship activities (e.g., residency interviews, COMLEX exams, vacation, graduate assistantships, teaching, volunteer activities, employment, class activity, etc.) may not supersede or conflict with your clinical duties and academic assignments. 6

APPLICATIONS (APPLIES TO PCAC SPECIALITY/CHOICE AND ALL SELECTIVE/ELECTIVE ROTATIONS) All selective/elective rotations require students to complete an application. Forms can be accessed by logging into www.angel.msu.edu and following each application s specific direction. Base Hospital and PCAC Specialty/Choice Requests are made electronically by accessing your online schedule Approvals are processed using web-based electronic email between hospital and Office of Student Services Confirmation of rotation found by accessing your online schedule Non-Base Hospital Requests are made by printing web application, completed with all required signatures, and submitted to the Office of Student Services for processing and approvals. Allow 6-10 weeks for processing and approvals The Clinical Training Site may require their own application Confirmation of rotation found by accessing your online schedule. VSAS Requests are made through the Visiting Student Application Service at www.aamc.org International Requests are made by printing web application, completed with all required signatures and submitted to the Office of Student Services Allow 2-4 weeks for processing and approvals Confirmation of rotation found by accessing your online schedule Research Requests and approvals are made following instructions as outlined under REQUEST FOR RESEARCH CREDITS DURING CLERKSHIP Clinical Enrichment Experience Requests are made by printing web application, completed with all required signatures, and submitted to the Office of Student Services 7

APPLICATION DEFINITIONS Base Hospital application is used for rotating in any base hospital. PCAC Specialty rotation must be completed in the student s base hospital PCAC Choice rotation may be completed at any base hospital, however, student is required to return to their assigned base hospital for all didactic sessions Non-Base Hospital application is used for rotating at any clinic/ hospital not listed on the Base Hospital Contact List. May require an affiliation agreement International application is used for rotating in another country with or without MSUCOM faculty. Research application is used for an approved research project. Clinical Enrichment application is used for participating in a clinical setting without enrollment but while enrolled in another service. Participation would take place evenings and/or weekends. REQUIREMENTS FOR CLERKSHIP APPLICATIONS 30-day advance application approval required (applies to an add, change or cancellation of a rotation) An application is required for every selective/elective & PCAC choice/ specialty rotation/experience A student cannot start a rotation without submitting the proper application, receiving approvals, and enrollment completed prior to the first day of the rotation. Be advised not adhering to this could result in approaching your graduation date with unfulfilled graduation requirements which will prevent graduating on time and could impact your postgraduate training start date. You must notify the hospital s DME office (verbally or in writing) if cancelling an elective/selective rotation with their hospital 3 maximum selective/elective rotation changes per semester allowed A maximum of 4 two-week elective and 1 two-week selective rotations allowed. An Affiliation Agreement, if required, may take 6 to 10 weeks for processing and approval. It is your responsibility to know if one is required, so plan ahead... Schedule all out-time rotations early to avoid not receiving financial aid because you are not enrolled (aid is released one week before first enrolled rotation of the semester) 8

(APPLIES TO ALL ROTATIONS) EVALUATIONS Students assume a major role in the clinical clerkship evaluation. The Clinical Supervisor s evaluation of student mastery of rotation objectives is an essential component of the student s clerkship performance. Timely completion of evaluations at the conclusion of each rotation is considered professional conduct and contributes significantly to program improvements. All rotations require the completion of both a student and a clinical supervisor evaluation. Forms can be accessed by logging into the Clerkship ANGEL Group at http://angel.msu.edu. STUDENT EVALUATION OF ROTATION, PHYSICIAN AND HOSPITAL Students will submit their rotation evaluations electronically at the conclusion of every rotation by accessing their online schedule. CLINICAL SUPERVISOR S EVALUATION OF STUDENT Students are responsible for assuring that his/her clinical supervisor receives the appropriate evaluation form. Forms can be found in the clerkship ANGEL group or in the rotation ANGEL course. Students should assertively seek feedback on his/her performance throughout the course of the clinical rotation. Students should sit down and discuss the formal evaluation with the clinical supervisor. Student, clinical supervisor, and DME from rotation hospital are required to sign the evaluation form. Students should keep a copy of the evaluation and leave the original with the Medical Education Office at the clinical training site where that office will review, sign, and forward the completed form to the Office of Student Services. Grades are held until all rotation requirements, including evaluation forms are received. Be sure you are using the correct form. Evaluations will not be accepted by the Office of Student Services if submitted by the student. Any evidence of tampering or modification while in the possession of the student will be considered unprofessional behavior resulting in an N grade and review by the Committee on Student Evaluation (COSE) and/or the College Hearing Committee. 9

SAMPLE EVALUATION There are three parts to each attending evaluation form. Part I: Rotation information to be completed by student. Student must fill in all information at the top of the evaluations (dates, services, attending name, etc.). Rotation dates that do not match university enrollment will not be logged as received or credit given until dates are verified. Part II: Rating information to be completed by attending physician. 1 2 3 4 5 If you receive below average scores in 2 or more categories (rankings of unsatisfactory or 3 and below) on any individual evaluation or any comments of unprofessional behavior, evaluation will be sent to the Department Chair for review. Part III: Signatures. Students may NOT deliver evaluations to Clerkship Office. 10

COMLEX Deadline for taking and pass score received for COMLEX Level 1 exam January 1, 2013 Students who do not pass by this date will be pulled from the clerkship program and placed on a College leave of absence. Prepare to pass COMLEX Level 2CE by August 2013 Prepare to pass COMLEX Level 2PE by January 2014 Check with the hospital s Medical Education Office and course protocol before scheduling a COMLEX exam or any residency interviews during a scheduled rotation. Seek permission for time off from both the rotation s Clinical Supervisor and Director of Medical Education, by completing the on-line excused absence form. If seeking permission for more than 2.5 days off, you are also required to seek permission from the Office of Student Services, by completing the on-line excused absence form. REMEMBER... For problems that arise in your base hospital regarding in-house matters, work with the Director of Medical Education to achieve resolution. Ask for program requirements/process advice from the appropriate clerkship team individual (see clerkship resource list) - do not seek clarity from classmates or hospital personnel be aware that grace will not be granted for receiving wrong advice. You will be pulled from your rotation if non-compliant for any reason Contact the Office of Student Services when: You have questions or are not sure who to contact Your schedule needs to be changed You are included in a hospital incident of any kind You change your name and/or address You want to verify degree requirements 11
