Hospital quality ratings for heart failure care Congestive heart failure (CHF) affects nearly five million Americans. It is caused by the heart s inability to pump enough blood to the rest of your body, and it can seriously reduce your quality of life. The following chart lists the quality ratings for Priority Health participating hospitals for heart failure care. This information was collected, scored, and provided to us by the Hospital Quality Initiative, an effort led by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services. Data was last reported in September 2009. A blank space indicates that the hospital did not report results or did not have enough patients in the category to report results. Definition of terms: inhibitor : If you have a heart attack or heart failure, the hospital should give you an (angiotensin-converting enzyme) inhibitor. inhibitors are medicines that can help reduce the risk of death from a heart attack and must be given within 24 hours of the first symptoms of a heart attack. They work by stopping the body from producing a hormone that narrows blood vessels. This helps to improve heart function and lower blood pressure. LVSD stands for left ventricular systolic dysfunction. The left ventricle is the main pumping section of the heart. If it is not working properly, it can cause a heart attack or heart failure. of left ventricular function: If you have heart failure, the hospital should test your left ventricle the main pumping section of the heart to find the cause. This includes listening to your heart and ordering tests like a chest x-ray, blood work, and an echocardiogram (ECG). instructions provided: The hospital should advise you that heart failure is a chronic condition, and its symptoms include shortness of breath, dizziness and fatigue. It should also provide you with information that will help you manage your symptoms after you get home, and tell you what to do if your symptoms get worse. smokers to quit: A hospital should educate you on the benefits of quitting smoking. Smoking increases your risk for developing blood clots and heart disease that can result in a heart attack, heart failure or stroke. Quitting may help prevent another heart attack. Smoking is also linked to lung disease and cancer, and it can cause premature death.
