UNIVERSITY OF KENTUCKY PEPP II Program Homegrown Healthcare Providers PEPP II Summer Program: June 6 th - July 3 rd, 2018 MISSION The Professional Education Preparation Program (PEPP) II is a summer academic enrichment program for rising juniors and or seniors who are interested in becoming rural physicians or dentists. We offer many avenues for networking, volunteering, and observations to accelerate your application for professional school. Our goal is to provide our participants a summer of growth and involvement to become future healthcare providers in underserved areas across the Commonwealth of Kentucky. OVERVIEW PEPP II is a four and half week residential summer program administered by the Professional Education Preparation Program through the Donald T. Frazier Science Outreach Center at the University of Kentucky. This is a mandatory attendance program; therefore, do not consider applying if you have a conflicting event during the duration of the program. The program is designed to prepare students from medical and dental shortage counties/areas of Kentucky for the admissions process for medical and dental school, as well as, provide clinical and volunteer experiences in medicine and dentistry. PEPP II is funded by the Dean s Office of the University of Kentucky College of Medicine. Program materials and dormitory housing are provided by the program. All participants must reside in the PEPP designated dormitory (no commuting or apartments). We use email as a major outlet for communication and during the program, we use Dropbox as a means of uploading information and documents for your participation throughout the program. ELIGIBILITY Applicants must be Kentucky residents, whose permanent (home) residence is in one of the medical or dental shortage counties or health professional shortage areas listed below. All applicants must have completed at least two years of college. No graduates or nontraditional students. Applicants must have completed two semesters of general chemistry with labs and two semesters of biology with labs. It is preferred, but not required, that applicants have completed two semesters of organic chemistry with labs at the time of participation. In certain cases, students who need to take a summer school class may be allowed to do so while attending PEPP II, but only if the class(s) is online and we have to be made aware of the need to take the class.

Once accepted the total cost will be broken up into payments, but for your attendance, in the program, your charges will be paid in full before June 1st. Any out of county acceptances will be charged, regardless of family annual income, $1,500.00 for participation. You will also receive a MCAT or DAT exam during
your time at PEPP. There is also a PREP Course that concentrates on personal statements, interview skills, and application skills. By being a PEPPer you will receive future assistance with application and interview preparation for medical school and dental school throughout your undergraduate career. PEPP participants will receive a 50% discount on their MCAT and or DAT preparations course from KAPLAN. EXPERIENCES Hospital and Clinical rotations at the UK Chandler Medical Center and at the UK Hospital and Clinics are a very important part of the PEPP II experience. Pre-Med participants will have rotations n the Operating Room, the Emergency Department, Pediatrics, and Labor and Delivery. Pre-Dental students will also observe and shadow faculty, dental students, and patients in the UK Dental Clinics, including the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and the Urgent Care Clinic. Participants will have visits to Cardinal Hill Hospital, Special Needs Camps for Children and many other volunteer/service opportunities throughout the Lexington community. Laboratory experiences and seminars on health-related topics include, but are not limited to: medical and dental admissions, organ transplants, genetic defects, cancer, rural medicine, hypnosis, missions, therapeutic message, Alzheimer s, HIV/AIDS, nutrition, and much more. Experiences include minimally invasive surgery lab, suture clinic, pathology lab, and much more. Lastly, you will have numerous opportunities to network with representatives and faculty of the College of Medicine and College of Dentistry. Please note: Participants must abide by all rules of the program. This is a mandatory attendance program, therefore, do not consider if you have conflicting events during the duration of the program. All students are required to live in the dorm 7 days a week for the duration of PEPP. The schedule is packed with beneficial items that require your attendance. Participants may be excused for pre-arranged events no more than 2 days during the entire program) conferences, etc. Participants are required to attend classes and all scheduled activities held during the week. Participants will have free time in the evenings and weekends around their scheduled shadowing times.
