Job description for the post of: Lecturer or Senior Lecturer in Media, Film & Television Studies (Maternity cover) EHT0008-0917 Reporting to Accountable to Head of Department of Media Dean of Faculty of Arts and Sciences The Post The Department of Media has a well-established and dynamic provision with approximately 900 students on a range of undergraduate programmes that include Film Studies, Film Studies with Film Production, Film & Television Production, Media, Film and Television, Media, Music and Sound, and Animation. We also have a range of Masters degrees, including an MA in Film and Media. The staff of approximately 30 have a range of expertise in theory and practice that reflects and supports the provision. Creativity and high standards of academic quality and performance are at the centre of the values and ethos that underpins the programmes. The department s portfolio is well resourced to match student demand and expectations, and includes a new 19 million building, Creative Edge, opened in 2013, with state of the art music recording and television studios. Given the convergent nature of the subject and the multi-disciplinary approach to the delivery of the programmes, staff are expected to teach within their specialism and in related areas across the provision. The programmes are taught through a variety of methods including workshops, lectures, presentations, group seminars and visits. All of the degrees place a strong emphasis on both industry and transferable skills and student support. Tutors need to be able to manage the full range of tutorial and student support and guidance. The Department of Media offers a range of vocationally relevant research informed programmes underpinned by extensive staff research and publication. The Department has a dynamic research culture and in 2014 was recognised by a successful REF outcome with 45% of research in the top two categories as either 3 or 4 (internationally excellent or world-leading). Further appointments in 2014-15 have significantly increased the research staff of the department.
We are looking to make an academic appointment to cover a period of maternity leave for the 2017-18 academic year. A Lecturer/Senior Lecturer is required, with an established teaching and research specialism in media, film and television studies. The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to BA and MA teaching, playing a significant role in the delivery of specialist modules. Candidates should be committed to student success and innovation in Learning, Teaching and Assessment, and be reflective practitioners of HE teaching. The successful candidate will deliver modules in the areas of: Studying Television; Analysing Film and Television; Television Form and Engagement; Aesthetics in film and television theory. Dissertation supervision is also a key role for this post. As such the successful candidate will have expertise in, media studies, film studies and television studies. The appointment will be made at Lecturer Grade 8 or Senior Lecturer Grade 9 as appropriate. The successful candidate will ideally have a good honours degree and, for a Grade 9 appointment a PhD in any area of Film or Media is expected. A record of, or potential for, research and publication is essential, and for more senior appointments the potential to pursue research of international excellence or knowledge exchange projects. The postholder will be expected to contribute to the Department s growing research and/or to the development of relevant knowledge transfer activities. Candidates will ideally have experience of successful and effective teaching of film studies in Higher Education. Specific duties and responsibilities (Grade 8) The post-holder will be expected to: a) Contribute effectively to teaching media, film and television studies, as agreed with the Head of Department, with support and assistance from colleagues as required. b) Contribute effectively to the Media subject area in an appropriate area of research/industry knowledge exchange, as agreed with the Head of Department, with support and assistance from colleagues as required. c) Contribute effectively to the design and planning of the curriculum including preparation of own teaching and learning materials and course documentation. d) Effectively oversee the welfare, progress, examination and assessment of the students as designated by their line manager. e) Promote the work of the University and participate in the recruitment, selection and induction of students. f) Act as personal tutor to provide support to individual students and groups of students in accordance with Edge Hill procedures, referring students to further support services as appropriate. g) Contribute to the curriculum development of academic programmes in Media and related areas h) Seek to enhance the quality of education by ensuring that high standards of teaching and learning are maintained on all courses to which they contribute i) Organise and administer tasks in an efficient and effective manner. j) Use teaching and learning strategies, which encourage student involvement and advance their independent learning. k) Develop and maintain links with cognate disciplines within the Faculty, University, industry and the Community l) Carry out any other duties associated with the area as judged appropriate by the Head of Department.
