Learning Objectives 1. Understand sentences and frequently used expressions related to areas of most immediate relevance. 2. Communicate in basic routine tasks requiring a simple and direct exchange of information on familiar and routine matters. 3. Identify and describe distinctive aspects of Portuguese grammar. 4. Understand cultural features in different contexts. Course Prerequisites There are no course prerequisites. Assessment and Final Grade For the final grade, the following elements will be considered: 1. Class participation: 30% 2. Homework assignments: 15% 3. Conversation test: 15% 4. Final exam: 40% Course Requirements Class participation: use of the grammar and vocabulary, simulating day life situations. Homework assignments: systematize rules and practice the reading and writing. Conversation test: introduce; greet; talk about everyday life situations. Final exam: evaluation of reading comprehension and writing, basic grammar and vocabulary. Attendance and Class Participation CIEE students are required to attend all classes. Absences are not allowed. If you are sick, you must inform your professor and provide a doctor s note to the Resident Director. Half a point will be subtracted to your final grade if you miss 5 hours of classes. A point will be subtracted to your final grade if you miss 6 hours of classes. Two points will be subtracted to your final grade if you miss 7 hours of classes. You will fail the course if you miss more than 7 hours of classes.
