Maths Mastery Since September 05, Winsor Primary School has joined the Mathematics Mastery Programme. This is an exciting venture for us as we believe this will have a significant impact on pupil progress. The Mathematics Mastery scheme of work is developed by ARK Schools, which is a charitable network of academy schools. The ARK Schools network has evolved a shared mission to address educational disadvantage by promoting, developing, researching supporting a mastery approach to teaching mathematics. Mathematics Mastery is a non-profit organisation developed by ARK Schools to meet their aspiration of success for every child. Mathematics leaders teachers within the network worked together to develop a curriculum pedagogy that would meet this aspiration, their collaboration now extends beyond the ARK network of schools, to schools like Winsor. What s new about the Mathematics Mastery approach? Actually, none of the individual aspects of the Mathematics Mastery programme is new. They are tried tested successful approaches that the best teachers, departments schools have been using for years. However, what is special about Mathematics Mastery is that it brings these approaches techniques together in a rigorous systematic structure. The Curriculum The Mathematics Mastery curriculum has been developed to ensure every child can achieve excellence in mathematics. It provides pupils with a deep understing of the subject through a concrete, pictorial abstract approach. This ensures pupils fully underst what they are learning. Key features of our Maths Mastery curriculum: High expectations for every child Fewer topics, greater depth Number sense place value come first Research -based curriculum Objects pictures always before numbers letters Problem solving is central Calculate with confidence underst why it works Mathematics Mastery places emphasis on the cumulative mastery of essential knowledge skills in mathematics. It embeds a deeper understing of maths by utilising a concrete, pictorial, abstract approach so that pupils underst what they are doing rather than just learning to repeat routines without grasping what is happening. The aim is to ensure every child achieves excellence in mathematics.

Tracking Pupil Progress In Mathematics Mastery assessment is continuous. From the beginning of every lesson, teachers teaching assistants will be assessing what their pupils are, or are not understing use this to scaffold each segment of the lesson. Interventions will be both planned for live, meaning that misconceptions are dealt with immediately high attaining pupils are challenged appropriately. Maths Meetings Maths meetings happen daily outside of the Maths lesson last about 5 minutes. The aim of them is to: Give students repeated practice on basic skills concepts (speed, consolidation, mastery of what has been taught) Whole class ritual around the Meeting Board/IWB Establishes a routine for starting mathematical thinking in the day, building classroom culture, making connections to mathematics in everyday life Sample content for Reception year Calendar Patterns Place value Graph Counting Coin recognition Time Relationships Consolidate Month, days, year, today s date, today, yesterday, tomorrow. Shape patterns using calendar, later on number patterns with different steps. Number of maths meetings. Add one straw each day. Make a bundle of ten. Use place value pockets alongside written numbers or cards. Pictograph transition into bar graph, questions about more, less, equal, how many more. Weather graph what s the day like today? Record sunny, windy, cloudy, rainy days on graph. Daily counting for number of days up to 00, counting by s, 5 s, 0 s. Find the missing number/secret number push divergent thinking. Count different money amounts. Tell the time to the hour, half hour. Number bonds, fact families Anything not securely learnt in maths lesson as when.
