SIXTH FORM PROSPECTUS

WELCOME FROM THE HEADTEACHER Dear Students and Parents, I am delighted that you are interested in the Sixth Form at The Bicester School. Our Sixth Form is growing and vibrant, made up of a varied and diverse body of students who are all dedicated, hard-working and aspirational for their futures. Our well-appointed school benefits from excellent specialist teachers and facilities, including new science laboratories, a sports centre and a separate Sixth Form area for independent study and social times. We place great emphasis on the development of our Sixth Formers: Each is assigned a personal tutor, alongside a Head of Sixth Form and Deputy, all of whom are able to give exceptional pastoral and academic support. This has enabled many of our students to thrive and fulfil their ambitions in moving into higher education or excellent jobs and professional careers. I trust that you will find this prospectus both interesting and helpful. I also recommend a visit to our school website at www.thebicesterschool.org.uk where there is further information about the school. We look forward to welcoming you when you come and visit our school and meet our staff teams. We trust that you will see just how committed we are to the work we do. We all share the common belief that every one of our Sixth Form students is of equal value and has the right to learn in a calm, purposeful and engaging environment so they can achieve their maximum potential. Tony Rushworth Headteacher WELCOME FROM THE HEAD OF SIXTH FORM The Sixth Form at The Bicester School is an excellent choice for anyone looking to prepare for a successful future. We are a vibrant and diverse institution with clear ambition to build on our success and ensure we provide the highest quality experience for our students. Our day to day work is built upon our core values of aspiration, responsibility, resilience and achievement and all members of the Sixth Form look to develop these in all we do. Our core academic curriculum is built around A-levels, and we also offer a range of vocational BTEC qualifications to provide a range of challenging progression routes for all students. We are proud of the high quality of our teaching and this has also been recognised by Ofsted - in our last inspection in May 2014, the inspectors judged the Sixth Form as good, providing a wide range of well-taught study paths to follow. We also place great importance on providing opportunities and facilities beyond the classroom which develop independent and well-rounded individuals. Our students are ably led by the Sixth Form Leadership Team, a group of elected students who take the lead on charity work, social events and sporting activities, as well as working closely with Sixth Form staff in shaping and developing the ethos of our Sixth Form. I hope this prospectus will give you an idea of what life in the Sixth Form is like, but there is no substitute for first-hand experience. If you would like to arrange a visit to discuss what we do in more detail, please do not hesitate to get in touch; we would be delighted to meet you and show you round. I look forward to working with you in the future. Jonny Tridgell Head of Sixth Form Alongside great teaching and a dynamic student body, we also place great importance on providing expert advice on life during and after Sixth Form. We have a long history of supporting students successfully into the next stage of their lives, and many Sixth Form students from The Bicester School go on to follow degree courses at prestigious universities and to enjoy success in a diverse range of careers. Underpinning this is our dedicated and highly experienced tutor team, who work closely with students to ensure that they are fully supported in every aspect of their Sixth Form experience.

A diverse, enriching pathway 5 A DIVERSE, ENRICHING PATHWAY There are two main qualifications we offer at The Bicester School: A-Levels and BTECs. A-Levels are traditional, academic qualifications. They are largely assessed through examinations, some at the end of Year 12 and most at the end of Year 13. BTECs offer a vocational route, with assessment based on coursework. Both BTECs and A-Levels can be studied for one year or two. All Sixth Formers will choose four subjects in Year 12, which can drop down to three in Year 13. These can be A-Levels or BTECs or a mixture of the two. Each type of qualification has its own merits and we can talk to you further about the route that s right for you. Both qualifications can lead to university level study or on to other forms of training or employment, including apprenticeships. What can I study? Applied Science Applied Sport Art and Design Biology Business Studies Chemistry English Language and Literature English Literature French Further Mathematics Geography Health and Social Care History ICT Mathematics Media Studies Music Philosophy and Ethics Physics Physical Education Product Design Psychology Sociology Spanish Textiles What do I need? Each course in the Sixth Form has its own entry criteria, which are explained on the course information sheets available at our open evening, on the school website or from the Sixth Form office. We have high expectations for all our students and we will work with you to ensure the courses you choose are suited to your learning style and future goals. To join the Sixth Form at The Bicester School, students must achieve 5 GCSEs at grade A* - C (or equivalent) including English and Maths at a minimum of grade 4. For A-level courses, students should also achieve at least a grade B in the subjects (or closely related subjects) that they wish to study. Please note that any student who does not achieve a grade 5 in GCSE English or maths will need to resit these exams in Year 12, in line with government requirements.

What can the Sixth Form do for me? 7 WHAT CAN THE SIXTH FORM DO FOR ME? First-class teaching and learning The most important thing that we can do for you is provide a first-class learning experience and ensure that you achieve the very best results. extra-curricular opportunities, working in the community or attending trips. It might also be through supporting our Sixth Form charities, which have benefited from large sums raised by students in the last two years. I oversee students applications to university via UCAS. It is brilliant to see students researching courses they are passionate about and want to study further. It is a pleasure to write supporting references to help them achieve their goal of a place on a degree course. Jo Waddams Deputy Head of Sixth Form We are committed to ensuring that all the teaching you receive is of the highest quality and supported by rigorous and useful feedback and support. Ofsted has recognised the consistently high quality of teaching in the Sixth Form and this has also been shown in our results. Student progress in learning is regularly monitored, including through four Common Assessment Points (CAPs) throughout the year. These are followed by the chance to meet and discuss results with form tutors, the Head and Deputy Head of Sixth Form, who carefully consider the progress of students against their targets. For us, the job is only done when a student has achieved their potential. Preparing you for the future The Sixth Form team is well trained and highly skilled at preparing students for their next step, whether it is university, college, an apprenticeship, further training or the workplace. We are building relationships with universities such as Oxford Brookes University and the University of Oxford to provide you with useful insights and preparation. Here at The Bicester School we can offer you the whole package - a great experience and a brilliant future. Sixth Form facilities Sixth Formers have their own space at the school, separate from the rest of the student body. You will have your own common room, complete with kitchen, football table and TV, where you can relax during break and lunchtimes. You will also be able to use the Sixth Form study areas, as well as make use of the facilities in the departments you are working in, such as our fantastic art studio. Support that goes the extra mile We understand that life can sometimes throw up obstacles that can seem impossible to overcome. As a Sixth Former at The Bicester School, you can always be sure of our compassion and unremitting, experienced support - no matter what. Our priority in the Sixth Form is that you find joy in what you do here and learn to look for it in your future. In the last two years I have also worked with the Sixth Form, charity committee, which has worked hard to raise money for Educaid. This charity funds secondary education for children in Sierra Leone and I have been hugely impressed with the way students have given their time, organisational skills and enthusiasm to help others by raising hundreds of pounds. Sixth Form students have so much potential, which I know we can help them fulfil. Throughout your time at the Sixth Form, you will be given guidance and support from the team as well as from older students to help you make informed decisions. We will help to ensure that, by the time you leave us, your CV or your personal statement is full of experiences that will help you stand out from the crowd. This might be through Message from the Deputy Head of Sixth Form Having worked with the Sixth Form for a long time, I can confidently say that it is going from strength to strength and that it provides a positive and encouraging environment for post- 16 students.

What do our students say? 9 WHAT DO OUR STUDENTS SAY? When talking about The Bicester School Sixth Form, the first thing that springs to mind is the staff that allow our Sixth Form to exist. They are very friendly and always happy to help you sort out any problems you may have. Another thing I like is our student council team who are always trying to improve day to day life in the Sixth Form and are always open to taking on board suggestions from other members of the Sixth Form. I also like is our Sixth Form common room, it has a friendly and welcoming atmosphere and is easy to study in, and we also have access to silent study rooms and computers and printing which is very useful for studying. Overall I am very happy with the BicesterSchool Sixth Form. Sam Brooks I love the Sixth Form here at The Bicester School because it is a small, close community of friends; everyone gets on really well with each other and it is lovely to be in an environment where you can work both independently and as a team. As Head Student I aim to make the common room as stimulating as possible, for both work and play; for example, putting up art work produced by students in the Sixth Form. Additionally, I aim to make sure every suggestion for improvement gets an equal opportunity to be heard. In the future I would like to study zoology or drama at university then travel around the world. Olivia Monaghan Our Sixth Form is a great place to learn and work, and everyone is so friendly and willing to help! The resources that we have at our disposal are amazing, this includes a common room in which we can study in peace, a vast amount of computers and printers to complete IT-based work and a communal kitchen that we are free to use. The learning environment within lessons is very relaxed and teachers are more than happy to help with any confusion you may have. All in all Sixth Form is a great way to continue and better your education even if you don t want to go to university, it will be hard but eventually, when you are opening your results it will all be worth it. David Matthews I am Kirsten Lyall and I am one of the Deputy Head Students at the Bicester School. I love the Sixth Form here at The Bicester School as it gives everyone equal opportunities and puts the student s needs first. While I hold the title of Deputy Head Student I hope to give everyone in Sixth Form a voice and help make positive changes to our learning environment so that everyone gets as much out of their time at Sixth Form as they can. After my time at The Bicester School, I plan to go to university and study English, which I believe I will be well equipped to do because of all of the wonderful staff at TBS! Kirsten Lyall Our Sixth Form is a wonderful place, where everyone is friendly and is always there to help you if you are stuck with something. We have an area where we can rest during breaks and lunches and also have very good computer rooms that are used during all study periods. Teachers are always there to support you. We also have many privileges like for example: no uniform, leaving at lunch if we have no lessons, access to ICT and printing and many more. We have a student council that listens to our ideas and take actions to make Sixth Form even better. In conclusion I want to say that I am very happy to be part of this Sixth Form, because everyone puts an enormous amount of effort to succeed in their goals. Kevin Kekisev My name is Millie Salt and I am a deputy head student here at The Bicester School. I am currently studying A-level Maths, Sociology and Philosophy and Ethics. I have been a student here since starting year 7 in 2010, and I took up the role of deputy head student to help give back to the school which has treated me so well. I enjoy going to Sixth Form here as the teachers are extremely supportive, and I get a real chance to learn and grow as an individual and as part of a community. After finishing Sixth Form I plan on going to university to study Sociology, and I hope to go on to teach the subject at secondary schools. Millie Salt
