SIXTH FORM REVISION PLANNER NAME: TUTOR GROUP:
How to use YOUR revision plan... Block out areas of time you cannot revise such as part-time jobs, training commitments, revision classes, tea time and favourite soaps!! Allocate at least 2 hours per subject per day using private study time as well allocate more time to subjects you need to improve more on especially if you were under-target in your mocks! Your teachers will let you know what you have to revise each week your job is to do it! Find a quiet spot with no distractions no mobile phone either! Agree with your friends not to contact each other between certain hours. Have everything you need at your fingertips felt pens for mind maps, revision cards for key facts and post-it notes to remind you of things you always forget! REALLY concentrate for 15 minutes, make notes or draw a mind map or write key definitions; take a breather then for the last 5 minutes test yourself what you can remember? Use your 15 minute revision booklet in tutor time. Highlight or write on post-it notes what you forget. Have a short break before you move onto the next subject. To store this knowledge in your long term memory you need to test yourself AGAIN the next day, one week later and again before your exam! Do NOT stay up late revising STOP by 10 pm. Get a good night s sleep you need at least 8 hours to concentrate tomorrow!! You need to be organised and self-disciplined REMEMBER, only you will benefit. This is YOUR future, your time and your efforts WILL be rewarded!
How To Prepare For Essay Exams Past papers are very useful when it comes to essay writing revision. You can see what the questions will be like so you won't be surprised at what's thrown at you in the real exams! If you are given exam related material prior to sitting the exam (e.g. pre-release booklets), use your reading skills to read it properly! Writing a preliminary outline for an essay will make writing the essay much easier. Preparing an outline before you start writing the essay should only take 10 minutes or less. Practice doing outlines for essays so that you aren't attempting it for the first time in the exam hall! Sticking to the time limits within an exam involving essays can be quite tricky so it's important that you prepare well so that you can use your time most effectively. If you find it particularly hard to write a good outline within 10 minutes for example focus on this. Remember, practice makes perfect! Getting someone else to read through some of the essays you have written can help you identify certain problems that you may not have noticed without someone else pointing them out. Some Basic Revision Techniques Design a revision timetable and plan it carefully to ensure you revise all subjects effectively Re-reading class notes. Pretty basic method or revision but can come in handy when you need to remind yourself of the key facts. Don't spend all of your revision time reading though. There are some far more effective methods and techniques. Revision guides. You don't need any more than one per subject. Copying out key points from your notes onto small revision cards. Make use of diagrams. Draw your own diagrams so that you can remember them better. Use mnemonics to help you remember certain patterns or sequences. A mnemonic is a way of helping you remember information using abbreviations, words or phrases. For example, to remember the colours of the rainbow, you could use the mnemonic: Richard of York Gave Battle In Vain, using the first letters of each word to remember the colours Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Indigo and Violet. Simple! Make audio notes by reading your notes onto a laptop/ ipad/ camera. You can then play it back to yourself whenever you like! Write important words and phrases on sticky notes that can be stuck where you'll see them every day. On your walls or doors... anywhere will do. Get friends and family to test you on various facts vocabulary etc... This will help you keep your mind alert and it will give you an idea as to how much you really know. Share ideas with friends and give support to them when they need it. They should do the same for you! As the (mock) exams get ever nearer, try doing some timed practice papers which you can either get off your teacher or off your examination board's website. This will really test how much you know, and in certain subjects such as English, you'll be able to practice your reading and writing skills. Of course, not all the above techniques have to be used but they give you an idea as to what you can do to make your revision more productive. Remember, it's all worth it in the end! REMEMBER: EACH SUBJECT MAY REQUIRE A DIFFERENT APPROACH FOR YOU TO EFFECTIVELY STUDY AROUND THE LESSON. LISTEN TO THE ADVICE OF YOUR TEACHER AND BEGIN NOW! Good Luck... and stay positive!!
