Informational Text: University of Florida Located in the heart of North Central Florida, the University of Florida (http://www.ufl.edu) is one of America s premier public universities. It is one of the largest universities in the United States and students from more than 100 countries attend UF s 20 colleges and 100 interdisciplinary research and education centers and institutes. The Harn Museum of Art The Samuel P. Harn Museum opened in 1990, dedicated to promoting the power of the arts to inspire and educate people and enrich their lives. Nearly 7,500 works are represented in the museum s various collections, which include Asian, African, photography, modern and contemporary art. The museum also displays numerous traveling exhibitions throughout the year. As an accredited museum, the Harn has been recognized as a leader in its field by the American Association of Museums. As an integral part of the University of Florida, the museum advances teaching and research and serves as a catalyst for creative engagement between the university and diverse local, state, national and international audiences. The Samuel P. Harn Museum of Art promotes the power of the arts to inspire and educate people and enrich their lives. One of the largest university-affiliated art museums in the United States, the Harn Museum has an 86,800-square-foot facility, which includes 32,800 square feet of exhibition space, a 250-seat auditorium, study center, museum store, café, spacious areas for art storage and staff offices for work and research. The Asian Wing Expansion Planned for the northwest side of the museum, the 26,000-square-foot addition will have three levels featuring 6,000 square feet of Asian art gallery space, an upper level for curatorial and museum activities, and art storage and conservation space for the Asian collections. An Asian garden with glass walls and roof will be accessible from the west side of the new wing. Kha Le-Huu & Partners of Orlando, Fla. has been selected as the project architect firm. The new addition will be Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED)-certified by the U.S. Green Building Council. Achieving the LEED certification is a particular challenge for art museums given the exacting climate standards for art preservation and volume of visitorship that they receive. The Asian collection includes nearly 1,750 works of art and has expanded in number and strengthened in quality during the last several years. The greatest strength of the collection is Chinese art, including ceramics, jades, bronzes, sculpture, lacquer, glass and literati paintings. The collection also features important works of art from Japan, Korea, Tibet, and South and Southeast Asia.
Building s Context The Harn Museum of Art Asian Wing Expansion is located at the new west gate to the university. The museum is part of the University of Florida Cultural Plaza, which also includes the Philips Center for the Performing Arts and the Florida Museum of Natural History. There will be a special events drop off location and a sculpture path leading to the museum. Works from the museum collection will be displayed along the path. Another path will meander around the lake. This path is intended to be a destination for cultural plaza visitors and pedestrians entering the campus. Hull Road Art Context The committee is interested in art that keeps in mind in the scope of the new expansion: Asian art. Integrating art with the natural environment is desired. Ideas of nature are valued, such as the changing seasons; the contrasts between summer and winter, hot and cold, dry and wet, water and sun, etc; universal artistic expression with nature; and the interaction of architecture and nature.
Sites for Art There are opportunities for Asian art in both interior and exterior locations. All potential sites for art are listed. However, in the end, not all sites may receive art. This will depend on the budget and proposed designs. Dimensioned documents for the exterior locations (to give a sense of scale) are provided in subsequent pages. Listed in no particular order the sites for art are: 1. Interior Hallway - Paintings may be considered for permanent display within the museum, exact location to be determined. Only durable materials such as oil or acrylic will be considered. 2. Asian Gallery - Video art will be considered for permanent display within the Harn Museum, exact location to be determined. 3. Curved Green Wall on Hull Road top portion of the wall without planting is a site for art. The wall will be constructed before the selection of finalists. 4. Sculpture Path path will connect Hull Road and special events drop off to the Asian Garden, museum café and UF Cultural Plaza. (sculpture, benches, lit elements, path alterations as appropriate) 5. Concrete Pads there are two concrete pads, currently star shaped on the construction documents. (Pad alterations/flooring as appropriate) 6. Lake Path extension of sculpture path that meanders around lake. Lake path is not currently shown on the construction documents. Art by the lake should be inviting since the welcome center is nearby and this is now a gate to campus. (sculpture, benches, lit elements, path alterations as appropriate) 7. Lake art can be located in the lake, however restrictions apply. There is a liner that cannot be compromised, no load points in the liner. Art can be attached at the shore or to itself on one major cantilever. Art must be gator proof. Alligators will be occupying the lake. The exterior of the building has stucco, stone inset, glass squares and travertine. Exterior finishes and landscape design will be provided to finalists at the site visit.
+/- 159 Curved Green Wall The curved green wall is located along Hull Road and is a highly visible site for art. The black and white hatched area is vertical landscape vine attached to screen. The area for art is located above the hatched area and has a triangle shape. The joint lines for the wall are shown.
Sculpture Path and Concrete Pads The sculpture path is indicated with dimensions below. Freestanding sculpture from the museum s permanent collection will be displayed in this area. The concrete pads (star shaped area of the more winding path) are accessible from the dimensioned sculpture path and are also possible locations for flooring alterations. Landscaping in this area cannot be altered.
Lake Path and Lake A path will be located around the lake (although not shown in this image). The lake and lake path will link the UF Cultural Plaza with nearby destinations off campus. This is a highly visible location for art.
