She was a mental health champion in high school and quickly discovered this was the direction she wanted to take. When it came to choosing a university, she wanted a place that would support her and her goals. I ve gotten so much from the community at Renison. Whenever I walk through the cafeteria, I see people I live with and people I have class with. I m waving to everyone. It s incredible. The flexible options in the Social Development Studies (SDS) program allowed Kayla to pursue her passion for changing the world, specifically helping refugees. Our students want to make a difference and solve the problems they see in the world around them. SDS combines psychology, sociology, social work and interdisciplinary SDS courses. Students gain an understanding of how to approach social issues from different angles. Knowledge and skills gained in small classes and hands-on experience will prepare you for a career in social work, counselling, education, public service, human resources, law, or in community or international service organizations. Renison connected Kayla s desire to help people with a new understanding of international diversity, allowing her to discover a new passion. These experiences inspired her to take the Cultural Diversity and Social Work specializations. Kayla is learning how to adapt theories and ideas from different social science disciplines in order to help refugees transition successfully to a new home in Canada. 2 UNIVERSITY OF WATERLOO RENISON 3

JOEL ARTS AND BUSINESS, SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT STUDIES MAJOR AND PSYCHOLOGY MINOR It s social sciences with a twist. ARTS AND BUSINESS Balance is valuable. Combining business with social sciences gave Joel an edge in his co-op workplace. When working for a political party, Joel was able to challenge ideas and solve issues from a social science and business perspective. 15% Students Business is fundamentally about people Joel understands that socially conscious organizations need team members with sound business skills in addition to a passion for helping others. He chose Arts and Business with a major in SDS to equip himself with the skills required to make smart business decisions regarding policies and procedures within organizations. who study with co-op have an average salary 15% higher than their peers 20 MONTHS of full-time work experience. Without the limitations of a traditional business program, Arts and Business with a major in SDS allows you to graduate with expertise in both areas! SOCIAL WORK A pathway to helping others Marielle came to university with an open mind, knowing that a helping profession was right for her, but not sure whether social work was the best fit. She applied to SDS to discover her career path and found a passion for feminism and human rights. Based on her experiences, she knew her next best step was the post-degree Bachelor of Social Work program. Want to be a social worker? The School of Social Work brings together classroom teaching and practicum experience. Renison offers 2 degree programs: a Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) and a Master of Social Work (MSW). Students apply to these programs after completing a university degree. However, Renison gives you the opportunity to start visualizing your full university education directly from high school. 1 ST BA Study SDS and graduate with a 3-year general or 4-year honours Bachelor of Arts degree. I wake up every day with a deep-founded sense of respect, honour, and privilege for the work that I do. TIFFANY, BSW GRADUATE 3 DEGREES IN 5 YEARS 2 ND BSW Take our 10-month Bachelor of Social Work degree and get practical experience while you study. 3 RD MSW Complete our online Master of Social Work program in one year and add a third degree to your résumé. 85+ community agencies partner with our School of Social Work 10 MONTHS to earn your BSW degree online health-focused ST 1 MSW program in Canada MARIELLE BSW GRADUATE I recall coming home in the evenings after placement to tell my family, breathlessly over dinner, about my learnings and encounters with youth and how this was the right path for me. Marielle did her BSW work placement working with homeless youth in Hamilton. This gave her invaluable experience working alongside youth struggling with mental health and addiction as well as other barriers such as family conflict and poverty.
