UBC ITE Student Chapter Annual Report 2007-2008 1 INTRODUCTION The 2007-2008 academic year was a great success for the University of British Columbia s student chapter of the Institute of Transportation Engineers. Few members from the previous year returned as many members graduated, however, many new faces have shown interest in becoming active members of UBC ITE. All executive members have showed a keen interest in not only promoting transportation engineering among fellow students, but also acting as facilitators of communication between industry and the student body. The following report summarizes the section s activities between April 1, 2007 and March 31, 2008. Chapter activities typically run from September to April, and as such, some activities have yet to be completed.

UBC ITE Student Chapter Annual Report 2007-2008 2 1.0 MEMBER ENROLLMENT The transition of the 2006-2007 executive to the 2007-2008 executive primarily occurred in April 2007, at the annual chapter dinner. The first semester marked the return of one of UBC s transportation professors, Dr. Jacqueline Jenkins. As Dr. Sayed, the chapter s past Chapter Advisor is on sabbatical; Dr. Jenkins has kindly taken on the role of Chapter Advisor for the 2007-2008 academic year. The 2007-2008 UBC ITE Student Chapter Executive members are: Chapter Advisor: Assistant Chapter Advisor: President:: Vice President: Secretary: Treasurer: Graduate Student Representative: Dr. Jacqueline Jenkins Clark Lim, Ph.D. Tanya Duamel Natasha Elliott Natasha Elliott Xiangyun Jiang Eric Mital, B.A.Sc. 4 th Year Representatives: Tanya Duamel Natasha Elliott 3 rd Year Representatives: Xiangyun Jiang Behin Phua 2 nd Year Representative: Jared Duivestein Immediate Past President: Webmaster: William Hui, B.A.Sc. Vacant Many students from all levels of study registered and became student members of ITE International this year. In total, there are six (6) members are in the executive and a total of twenty-one (21) student members registered with UBC ITE, most of whom are new members of UBC ITE. A full list of student membership can be found in the appendix to this report.

UBC ITE Student Chapter Annual Report 2007-2008 3 2.0 SUMMARY OF ACTIVITIES UBC ITE strives to promote the field of transportation engineering through diverse activities such as professional guest lectures, industry night, social events and conferences. The following sections highlight the activities in the summer and first semester in 2007 as well as some activities currently in the planning phase. 3.1 Get Hooked on Road Safety Conferences in Geneva, Switzerland April 23 29, 2007 Transport Canada partly sponsored conferences on road safety in Geneva in mid-2007. William Hui, Immediate Past President of UBC ITE, attended this conference. He was one of seven Canadian students selected to attend the conference. Upon his return, Mr. Hui wrote an article for the ITE Transportation Talk accounting his experience at the conference. The article can be found at http://www.cite7.org/newsletters/fall2007_print.pdf on page 13. 3.2 UBC ITE T-shirts At the end of the summer, UBC ITE T-shirts were printed and are currently being sold to ITE members. The logo on the front of the shirt is shown below in Figure 1, while the back of the shirt shows the logos of our 2006-2007 sponsors: Opus Hamilton, UBC Civil Department and Bunt and Associates.

This was a fun activity aimed to introduce students to the chapter. The purpose of this game is to arrange the miniature vehicles by sliding them either horizontally or vertically so that the red car can eventually exit the miniature street network. Students formed teams to solve the gridlock problem. Teams with the fastest times won. Figure 2 shows the game set up. This event is well received by the engineering students and has become a signature activity of UBC ITE. The games have also been informally played on occasion as practice rounds. Another Traffic Jam event will be held in the before the end of the academic year.

All UBC engineering students were invited to this event, while UBC ITE members received priority to attend. This event was met with great response from civil engineering students as well as mechanical and electrical engineering students. Students were given a brief lecture on the history of the Control Centre and a tour of the Control Centre and Maintenance Facilities. This event was a huge success and another field trip will be planned before the end of term.

This report is intended to determine students' general interest in transportation, their opinions on the undergraduate and graduate transportation courses, industry's expectations of graduating students, and to investigate transportation programs offered at other universities.

UBC ITE Student Chapter Annual Report 2007-2008 7 Information will be collected by internet research and by means of surveys. A number of short surveys will be developed for students (2nd, 3rd, and 4th year students as well as grad students), industry and for other ITE student chapters within Canada. Surveys will be available electronically via Survey Monkey as well as in hard copy. The Industry surveys are currently in circulation while the other surveys are currently being completed. The course review will ultimately be in the form of a written report submitted to the Department of Civil Engineering for their use, to improve the transportation program at UBC. 3.6 UBC ITE Industry Night The UBC ITE Student Chapter held the annual Industry Night on Wednesday January 30, 2008. An earlier date than last year was selected in order to attract more co-op and other students searching for employment. The event began with mingling and progressed to a presentation competition where three groups of 4 th year undergraduate students presented projects on improvements to different transportation facilities in Vancouver. Representatives from the Greater Vancouver ITE Chapter, the public sector and the private sector judged the presentations. A prize of $200 was presented to Tammy Liu and Ben Hong Lau for their presentation of implementing a counter-flow system on the Pattullo Bridge. Industry Representatives were also given the opportunity to give a brief presentation about their company. Figure 4 shows photos taken at the Industry Night. The chapter was also able to obtain sponsorship from the event from Bunt and Associates, PTV America and Opus Hamilton. Thirteen companies were represented at the Industry Night and over sixty students were in attendance.
