Don Bosco Primary Newsletter Newsletter Date: 1st Feb Term 1 week 2 SCHOOL CAPTAINS 2018 The School Captains this year are Callie Chan, Sonya Singh, Aryan Singh and Luka Dabo. We wish them all the best this year as they share their leadership skills with all in our school community. Dear Families, Last Friday we celebrated our whole school Mass for the start of the school year. At the Mass, we presented our four key words that encompass our whole school expectations for our school community and are based on the charism of St John Bosco: Be compassionate, Be inclusive, Be courageous & Be safe. These expectations are being discussed and elaborated on in all classrooms over the coming term. I wish to thank the work of the Positive Behaviour Support Team for their direction and leadership with this initiative. PARENT/TEACHER INTERVIEWS Parent / Teacher interviews have been organised for Wednesday 21st February. These meetings are greatly valued by the teachers in helping to establish positive relations between home and school. A child s learning and experience at school is greatly enhanced when there is good communication and mutual understanding between parents and the child s teacher. Interviews will be conducted on one day and will include some after hour times for our working families. School will finish at 3:20pm so that interviews will start at 3:40pm and with the last interview being held at 8:00pm. Details for booking online will be sent home today. If you are unable to attend on Wednesday 21st February please contact your child s teacher and arrange for another convenient time. SCHOOL PICNIC In keeping with the theme of being a friendly and welcoming school, the Education Board would once again like to invite all families to a school picnic on this Friday 9 th February. We hope this evening will be an opportunity for new families to meet other parents of our school and to feel at home within our school community. As well as a barbeque there will be some novelty events (sack races, egg & spoon, three-legged races, etc.). The evening will begin at 5:30 with a BBQ sausage. Please feel free to bring your own picnic dinner. Activities and races will start at about 6:15. I anticipate families will be ready to head towards home at around 7:00. I hope to see you there.

School Fees- School Fees have been sent home today, enclosed with your fees is a School Fee Information handbook. Direct Debits from 2017 will continue on in 2018, New families are asked to complete a direct debit form and return it to the school office by Friday 9th Feb. If you have not filled in your direct debit form can you please do so and hand back to the office. A calendar has been sent outline the dates of direct debits. CAPTAINS Congratulations to the following student leadership roles for 2018: School Captains: Luka Dabo, Aryan Singh, Callie Chan & Sonya Singh Community Captains: Matthew Curran & Ae Auxtero Arts Captains: Kai La-Faber & Gabby Wong Environment Captains: Lavinia Li & Daniel Franze Blue House Captain: Christiana Masvosva & Andre Marinelli Gold House Captain: Namitha Shoby & Ricardo D Vaz Green House Captain: Tuscany Espedido & Logan Wingrave Red House captain: Terina Raymond& Patrick Montgomery SCHOOL ATTENDANCE School attendance is a major issue for all schools. Days absent and late arrivals have an impact on students education. Learning begins at 8:50 and when children are late they often miss the focus lesson or take time to settle. It is also quite disruptive for other children when latecomers arrive. Children are supervised from 8:35. Please make every effort to ensure that your child is at school by 8:45am, it will have significant benefits for their learning. Parents need to be aware that children arriving after 8:50 will be marked Late Arrival on the roll, as this is a legal requirement. Parents are required to inform the school and provide an explanation of a student absence on the day of absence or in advance. Parents are able to inform the school by using the Skoolbag app or phoning the school to record a message on the Student Absence line. Notification needs to occur by 9:15 on the day of absence. New attendance guidelines now require schools to contact parents regarding any unexplained absences. This will occur through a computer generated SMS message. CARPARKING & PICK-UP ZONE As we have more families and students enrolled at the school this year, it is more important that the carpark routine be followed by everyone all the time. A full explanation of this procedure is on p.21 of the School s Information Book. Further copies of the Information Book are available at the office. It is extremely helpful if drivers using the Pick-Up Zone display a large name tag on their left hand sun visor for the staff to read. The Pick-Up Zone comes into operation at 3:20 and it is advisable that parents arrive after 3:25 if using the Pick-Up Zone. All cars will be directed to keep moving or park appropriately if arriving before 3:20. MEDICATION Any medication to be administered to children needs to be done so through the office. Parents are requested to provide written instructions as to the recipient of the medication, the dosage and the time it is to be administered. If such details were held at the school last year we need an updated note from parents for this year. SUNSMART Our school is a SunSmart school. Children are encouraged to use sunscreen and we insist that a hat is worn during recess & lunch times. Children without a hat are required to play in the designated shaded areas. SCHOOL VISITORS All visitors to school after 9:00am and before 3:00pm are required to sign in at the front office and display a visitor s badge. Teachers will approach any adult in the schoolyard without a badge and direct them to the office. MOBILE PHONES Children bringing mobile phones to school are required to leave the phones in the office before school and collect them at the end of the day. Mark Linden Principal

Parents and FriendsParents and Friends Meeting- 14th Feb 2018 after Ash Wednesday Mass in the P&F room. All welcome. We will be planning the year so your input is invaluable. School Banking We would like to invite any parents who would like to help with School Banking on a Wednesday. This is from 9.00am till 10.30am. If you can assist with this could you please let Petrina at the School Office know. DON BOSCO -Family Picnic Please join us for a sausage sizzle and get to meet our Don Bosco Community.
