Pierce. ourse Description: The course will explore laboratory-based activities specifically designed for the microbiology major. Prerequisite: MIR 30L ourse Objectives: This course is specifically designed for the microbiology major. Through a series of laboratory-based activities, the successful student will be to accomplish the following: 1. To become familiar with individual pathogenic microorganisms by using proper aseptic technique, by selecting appropriate conventional and rapid identification biochemical media and tests, by using a dichotomous key, and by employing molecular tools 2. To use a variety of educational resources to help identify and understand pathogens 3. To understand and respect the importance of pathogenic microorganisms in human and animal health, as well as in agriculture 4. To understand how microorganisms exchange genetic information. To use microbiological information to enhance critical thinking skills to problem-solve. To work effectively in both individual and group settings 7. To develop the ability to think independently and discuss microbiological issues in an intellectual and informed manner 8. To develop skills which will help the student succeed professionally after attaining a degree in microbiology 9. To take personal responsibility for academic success ourse Policies: Safety: This course involves the use of pathogenic microorganisms. Standard operating procedures for iosafety Level 2 must be strictly adhered to, and for the safety of all students and instructors, any student not following these procedures will be dismissed from the course. Students are required to sign and turn in the safety sheet found in the laboratory manual before they are allowed to continue with the course. The signing of this sheet is a contract between the student and the instructor and allows the instructors to dismiss the student should any of the provisions be violated. Attendance: Per NDSU policy (Section 333), attendance in classes is expected. Only the course instructor can excuse a student from course responsibilities. (The term "course" includes class, laboratory, field trips, group exercises, or other credit-bearing activities.) If class attendance is a component of the course grade, the course instructor must clearly communicate this to the class in the syllabus. Non-attendance does not absolve students from course responsibilities and does not automatically remove courses from student academic records. The course instructor must inform students on the first day of class and in writing in the syllabus (1) of their policy regarding class absence and (2) policy, if any, for making up missed assignments. It is recognized that sometimes an assignment or examination is impossible to make-up. Although the course instructor should exercise a fair and consistent standard for resolving questions of missed assignments, the type, extent, manner, and time frame of the make-up assignments shall be at the discretion of the instructor.

Micr 40L Infectious Disease Pathogenesis Lab 14 Students are responsible for informing course instructors of absences. If absences are known (e.g., university sanctioned activity), students must inform course instructors with written notification as far in advance as possible (preferably a two-week notice). Where advance notification is not possible (e.g., illness, family emergency, etc.), students should contact their course instructor as soon as possible about the absence. When a student misses class for any reason, the student is expected to make arrangements with the course instructor to follow the course instructor's policy in making up any missed assignments, if permitted. Unexcused absences will result in the deduction of 1-10 points at the end of the semester. Academic Honesty: All students taking any course in the ollege of Agriculture, Food Systems, and Natural Resources are under the Honor System (http://www.ag.ndsu.edu/academics/honor-system-1). The Honor System is a system that is governed by the students and operates on the premise that most students are honest and work best when their honesty, and the honesty of others, is not in question. It functions to prevent cheating as well as penalize those who are dishonest. It is the responsibility of the students to report any violations of the honor pledge to the instructor, honor commission or the Dean of the ollege of Agriculture, Food Systems, and Natural Resources. It is the desire of the instructors to minimize the out-of-class time necessary to complete most activities. Therefore, the computer lab in Van Es has been reserved during this class period for the entire semester for your use. If you prefer, please feel free to bring a laptop with you. You will not be allowed to use your computer or cell phone when you are working with microorganisms. Graduate students: In addition to the above course objective, graduate students will be expected to acquire a higher level of proficiency and understanding of microbiological techniques. These expectations will be met by participation in an actual case study in cooperation with the N. D. State Veterinary Diagnostic Lab. A written report on the case study, done in consultation with the instructor, will be required. Also, an oral report on the case study will be presented to the class. These reports will be worth an additional 2 points for a total of 30 points
