As we explained in the Programme Guide for Post Graduate Diploma in Disaster Management, you will have to do one Tutor Marked Assignment for each fourcredit course. Each assignment consists of Section I and II. There are five questions in each section. You have to answer a total of five questions in about 400 words each. You have to attempt atleast two questions from each section. You will find that the questions in the assignments are analytical and descriptive so that you can better understand and comprehend the concepts. Before you attempt the assignments, please read the instructions carefully provided in the Programme Guide. It is important that you write the answers to all the TMA questions in your own words. Your answers should be within the approximate range of the word-limit set for each question. Remember, writing answers to assignment questions will improve your writing skills and prepare you for the term-end examination. You are to submit the assignments to the Coordinator of your Study Centre. You must obtain a receipt from the Study Centre for the assignments submitted and retain it with you. It is desirable to keep a photocopy of the assignments submitted by you. Once evaluated, the Study Centre will return the assignments to you. Please insist on this. The Study Centre will send the marks to the SE Division at IGNOU, New Delhi. Submission: You need to submit the assignment within the stipulated date for being eligible to appear in the term-end examination. GUIDELINES FOR DOING ASSIGNMENT We expect you to answer each question as per instructions in the assignment. You will find it useful to keep the following points in mind: 1) Planning: Read the assignment carefully, go through the Units on which they are based. Make some points regarding each question and then rearrange them in a logical order. 2) Organisation: Be a little selective and analytical before drawing up a rough outline of your answer. Give adequate attention to question s introduction and conclusion. Make sure that: a) The answer is logical and coherent. b) It has clear connections between sentences and paragraphs. c) The presentation is correct in your own expression and style. 3) Presentation: Once you are satisfied with your answer, you can write down the final version for submission. It is mandatory to write the assignment neatly in your own handwriting. If you so desire, you may underline the points you wish to emphasise. MPA-001: UNDERSTANDING NATURAL DISASTERS Course Code: MPA-001 necessary to attempt at least two questions from each section. Each question carries 10 marks. Section - I 1) Describe briefly the regional and seasonal profile of any two types of disasters in India. 2) What measures would you suggest for disaster mitigation in drought prone areas? Discuss. 3) Write a note on nature of floods and significance of preparedness and response in flood disaster mitigation. 4) Critically evaluate the action taken by the State Government for disaster management, in the case of Orissa Cyclone 1999. 5) Discuss the various types of hazards associated with earthquakes. Section - II 6) Why do most of the slope failures or landslides occur after rainfall? Examine the landslide disaster management system. 7) Define avalanche and describe the methods of hazard prevention and mitigation. 8) Write a note on the main preventive measures, which are mostly adopted by people for protection from heat and cold waves. 9) Describe briefly the causes of sea level rise on Indian coastal zones and suggest the response strategies for disaster management. 10) Discuss the characteristics of Earth's atmosphere and explain the impacts of changes in atmospheric ozone. 4

MPA-002: UNDERSTANDING MAN-MADE DISASTERS Course Code: MPA-002 necessary to attempt at least two questions from each section. Each question carries 10 marks. Section - I 1) Describe briefly the different types of man-made disasters. 2) What are the causes of biological disasters? Discuss the factors contributing to vulnerability of population to the biological disasters. 3) Discuss the essential elements of the preparedness and response activities for mitigation of chemical disasters in India. 4) Explain the safety and prevention aspects of building fires. 5) Describe briefly the causes and impacts of oil fires in India. Section - II 6) Examine the major causes of deforestation and suggest measures to improve the forest management system in India. 7) Discuss the water quality criteria. 8) Enumerate the causes of rail accidents and highlight the possible risk reduction measures. 9) Write a note on air quality management. 10) Discuss the causes of sea accidents and bring out the role of various agencies involved in disaster management. 5

MPA-003: RISK ASSESSMENT AND VULNERABILITY ANALYSIS Course Code: MPA-003 necessary to attempt at least two questions from each section. Each question carries 10 marks. Section I 1) Elements at Risk are adversely affected during disasters. Discuss. 2) Explain important analytical models for Risk Assessment. 3) Community participation for Risk Reduction is possible through a number of ways. MPA-004: DISASTER PREPAREDNESS Course Code: MPA-004 necessary to attempt at least two questions from each section. Each question carries 10 marks.
