TEXAS STATE TECHNICAL COLLEGE SURGICAL TECHNOLOGY PROGRAM SEMESTER: FALL 2015 COURSE SYLLABUS COURSE NAME AND TITLE: SRGT 1409 Fundamentals of Perioperative Concepts and Techniques COURSE DESCRIPTION: In-depth coverage of perioperative concepts such as aseptic/sterile principles and practices, infectious processes, wound healing, and creation and maintenance of the sterile field. End-of-Course Outcomes: Demonstrate principles and practices of aseptic/sterile techniques; identify infectious processes and concepts of wound healing; create a sterile field utilizing basic case preparation; and exhibit maintenance of the sterile field during procedures. Weekly Test, Quizzes, Random Quizzes, Homework, (Written homework assignments will be given as required). Moodle Assignments, Presentation Assignments, and a Final Exam grade will be given. You will be tested on material that has been covered in class and on material that has been assigned to you. B. SCANS Competencies will be evaluated as part of unit performance tests. There will be a comprehensive final given at the end of the semester. C. The instructor reserves the right to change times of classes or other special meetings due to unforeseen circumstances. Whenever possible one (1) week notice will be given to inform student of changes in schedule.

Regular and punctual attendance in all classes is expected. TSTC reserves the right to act on individual cases of non-participation at any time. TSTC does not require faculty to take attendance; however, they have the right to do so if they choose and may set participation standards. Regular attendance is necessary for satisfactory achievement. Therefore, it is the responsibility of the student to attend lecture and laboratory sessions in accordance with requirements of the course as established and communicated by the instructor. A student who fails to meet these class participation requirements will earn a failing grade (F) in the course. The following guidelines apply when faculty administers participation policies: An absence can be issued whenever a student does not attend a regular scheduled instruction period, whether it s a theory or laboratory class. The instructor determines whether an absence is excused or unexcused. An excused absence is defined as one due to illness or an emergency situation beyond a student s control. A satisfactory written explanation from an appropriate authority should be given to the instructor. An absence for any other reason is considered as unexcused. Classroom: Class participation and promptness are expected in order to ensure your continued success in the program. Class preparedness and participation is essential in order to gain full knowledge of the subject matter being presented. Students will be expected to conduct themselves in a mature and attentive demeanor.! Excessive laughing and talking will not be tolerated.! NO CELL PHONES OR TEXTING IS ALLOWED IN CLASS

Unit tests will be given. It is the student s responsibility to contact the instructor the morning of the test if the student cannot attend. It is also the student s responsibility to make arrangements with the instructor to make up tests missed. If absent the test missed must be made up prior to the next class meeting. You will be allowed to make up tests, but 15 points will be deducted. *GRADING SYSTEM: In order to receive credit for the course, a grade of C or better must be earned. Failure to earn a passing grade in SRGT 1409 will result in being dropped from the program. The course grade is the average of all exam grades for lectures with the inclusion of accepted assignments. A. Exams are graded on the basis of 100%. 1. Exams will be given weekly to incorporate any information given in lecture or assigned as a homework reading assignment. Exams will incorporate any combination of the following: multiple choice, completion, matching, identification, and essay questions. 2. Each exam is timed, requiring the learner to gain practice in time management. This practice will benefit the graduate while taking the National Certifying Exam. 3. Make-up exams are not given. However, an exam may be taken late. The exam must be taken before the next class meeting. Arrangements have to be made with the instructor. There will be an automatic 15 point deduction from the score for the late exam regardless of excused absence. Each student will be allowed only one opportunity to take an exam after the missed class period. If the exam is missed, the student will be given a zero for the grade. 4. The final exam cannot be missed. A grade of zero will be given to any student who misses the final exam. B. Quizzes will be given at each class meeting. No Make-Up Quizzes!! No exceptions!! C. All assignments are due prior to the commencement of class. No late assignments will be accepted unless the student has made arrangements with the instructor. Ample time will be allowed to complete all work. Reading of required material is essential for satisfactory completion of SRGT 1409. You will be tested on any material that has been assigned. D. The Final Exam will be comprehensive and will include information presented throughout the semester. F. Extra credit assignments will not pass the student who has failed all exams.

Students will be notified as soon as the department is made aware of these in-services; however this often occurs with short notice given to the department. Students are mandated by the hospitals to attend these in-services. If student fails to attend they will not be allowed in clinical.
