Course Notes: Completion of CHM152LL required to meet the Natural Science requirement. Student may receive credit for only one of the following: CHM152 and CHM152LL, or CHM152AA Lab is a separate 1-hour course (you receive a separate grade for lecture and lab), and you must enroll separately for lab. You do not need to have the same instructor for lecture and lab, although you may find it to be beneficial to do so. The text is Chemistry available from OpenStax, at https://openstax.org/details/chemistry Required - Free Online homework: We will be using MathAS (an online homework program: https://mathas.pvc.maricopa.edu/) for this course. Online homework assignments are required. They are graded and are due as posted on Canvas, this syllabus, and the MathAS website. Course ID: Enrollment Key: Recommended - Calculator: A non-programmable calculator (basic or scientific) capable of computational and exponential functions will be necessary for homework and exams. Common uses will include scientific notation, logarithms (natural and base 10), exponents, and x-roots. Programmable calculators will not be permitted on quizzes or exams (the department has calculators you can borrow). Attendance Requirements: Attendance in lecture is mandatory and necessary for adequate performance in the class. Attendance will be taken daily. Anyone not enrolled in the class may not attend (liability issues). Therefore, you may not bring children to class (call Child Care Resources and Referral Service (602-244-2678) for free help finding last-minute State-approved day care). Anyone with 6 or more absences will be withdrawn from the course if you do not contact me first. If you take the final exam, you will be assigned a letter grade for the course! Withdrawals: I will withdraw anyone who misses 6 classes without talking with me. Grades of I are given only under extreme circumstances if the student requests it in writing, meets with the instructor, provides documentation, and the instructor approves it before the final exam. If you withdraw from lecture before October 27 th you must also withdraw from the lab. Students who take the final exam are not eligible to receive a W or Y. It is the responsibility of the student to drop the course before the deadline for student-initiated withdrawal. Students should use the Student Information System (SIS) to withdraw from the course. The instructor may drop a student for excessive absences (as defined by the instructor) with a grade of W. The deadline to withdraw from lecture is the day the third exam is graded and passed back. Students may not withdraw after that date a letter grade (A-F) will be assigned. Note: A grade of Y may be assigned for students caught cheating. A grade of Y counts as an F in your and cannot be replaced by retaking the class. Students who take the final exam are not eligible to receive a W or Y. Grading Standards & Practices: (It is your responsibility to elect to take this course Pass/Fail at the beginning of the semester.) You can check your grades throughout the semester on Canvas. Grades are updated about once a week. Emails sent after the final exam asking for extra credit will be deleted. The final exam is the last graded assignment. The dates of the exams are listed on the course outline on the next page. Each exam is worth 100 points and they will all count toward your final grade. Exams are taken in class. Each exam will cover two chapters. Questions will be in order of topics covered in class. Question formats can include but are not limited to: multiple choice, calculation, short answer, graphing/interpretation, drawing solutions. Make-Up Exams: None of the hour exams will be dropped. Therefore, it is imperative that you be present for every exam and plan travel and other events accordingly. If university-sanctioned travel or excused events do interfere with an exam date, then it is your responsibility to contact me BEFORE the scheduled exam and take the exam BEFORE the regularly scheduled time. All exam dates are scheduled at the beginning of the semester. If you miss an exam due to extreme, but documentable, emergencies, your final exam percentage will be substituted for the missed exam. Group Quizzes: Unannounced 10-point group quizzes or individual quizzes will be given during lecture. It is in your best interest to attend every class. These quizzes will be graded on a 10-point scale. Make-up quizzes will be allowed if I am notified before an absence (via email or phone). It is your responsibility to schedule a make-up quiz; you have up to two weeks to make up a missed quiz. Chapter Quizzes: There will be a 5 question, multiple choice, individual, in-class quiz covering main concepts from the chapter the class meeting after we finish each chapter (except for Nuclear which will not have a quiz). Questions will primarily be conceptual, but there will be a few short calculation questions. The lowest chapter quiz grade will be dropped at the end of the semester. Homework: Graded homework exercises (MathAS) will help you gauge your understanding of the material presented in each chapter. Homework assignments will be scored out of 20 points, except for Nuclear which will count for 10 points. The assignments will have about 10-15 questions. Your score on each assignment will be scaled to 20 points. How to access homework will be covered the first day of class. Final exam: The final exam will be a 50 question, cumulative, multiple choice exam. It will be worth 200 points. If you take the final exam, you will get a letter grade for the class. Not graded: Worksheets: Additional worksheets are available on my website as extra practice material to help you study. They will NOT be turned in or graded, although they will be helpful for you.
