Issue 17 Friday 19 November 2010 From the Principal Dear Parents and Students It is a great privilege for me this week to write to you in my first letter as Principal of the College. I would like to thank all the staff, parents and students for the many words of encouragement and support which I have received as I have taken up this new role in the last fortnight. I look forward to the future with great optimism and enthusiasm, as we continue to work together and grow this wonderful community which is Loreto. Farewell and Thank you Friday 5 November was Mrs Cheryl Hamilton s last day as Principal of the College and was marked by a lunch time sausage sizzle and ice blocks for all the students. Mrs Hamilton had the opportunity of saying goodbye to the girls in a relaxed, fun way as she mingled with the girls. This was the culmination of a number of farewell events which had occurred earlier in the term including the Community farewell on Saturday, 16 October, at which Mr Mark Bodycoat, Chair of the College Council, Dr Vicki Franzon-Lewis, Chair of the Parents and Friends, Mrs Tara Gremmett, President of the Old Scholars Association and Sr Christine Burke, Provincial, had the opportunity of acknowledging and thanking Mrs Hamilton for the enormous contribution that she has made to the Loreto College community over the last 10 years. This was followed by the student farewell assembly on the following Monday, where the students presented a stroll down memory lane of Mrs Hamilton s time at Loreto. The students affectionately crowned her the Loreto Queen of Hearts acknowledging Mrs Hamilton s compassion, empathy, generosity, kindness and love for all. Mrs Hamilton has been a much loved Principal, who will be very much missed by all staff, parents, students and the wider College community; our prayers and love go with her and her husband Ian as they move back home to Queensland. We are, indeed, very fortunate that Mrs Hamilton will remain in the Loreto family, as Principal of Loreto, Coorparoo and we look forward to our continued association in the coming years. Thank you Mrs Hamilton; we will miss you. Remembrance Day 11 November 2010 Last week, as we commemorated Remembrance Day across the College, I was particularly moved by the Monday morning R-5 Remembrance Day liturgy led by Ms Hattie Ziesing s Year 3 girls. The girls, wearing their red poppies and sprigs of rosemary, were just beautiful. They were well prepared and demonstrated a real understanding of the significance of the day, as did the rest of the primary students, in the reverent manner in which they participated in the liturgy. I share with you below the poem that was read in a most moving manner by the Year 3 girls. PLEASE WEAR A POPPY. Please wear a poppy, the lady said And held one forth, but I shook my head. Then I stopped and watched as she offered them there, And her face was old and lined with care; But beneath the scars the years had made There remained a smile that refused to fade. A boy came whistling down the street, Bouncing along on care-free feet. His smile was full of joy and fun, Lady, said he, may I have one? When she s pinned it on he turned to say, Why do we wear a poppy today? The lady smiled in her wistful way And answered, This is Remembrance Day, And the poppy there is the symbol for The gallant men who died in war. And because they did, you and I are free - That s why we wear a poppy, you see. I had a boy about your size, With golden hair and big blue eyes. He loved to play and jump and shout, Free as a bird he would race about. As the years went by he learned and grew and became a man - as you will, too. I still remember his face that day When he smiled at me and said, Goodbye, I ll be back soon, Mom, so please don t cry. But the war went on and he had to stay, And all I could do was wait and pray. His letters told of the awful fight, (I can see it still in my dreams at night), With the tanks and guns and cruel barbed wire, And the mines and bullets, the bombs and fire. Till at last, at last, the war was won - And that s why we wear a poppy son. The small boy turned as if to go, Then said, Thanks, lady, I m glad to know. That sure did sound like an awful fight, But your son - did he come back all right? A tear rolled down each faded cheek; She shook her head, but didn t speak. I slunk away in a sort of shame, And if you were me you d have done the same; For our thanks, in giving, if oft delayed, Thought our freedom was bought - and thousands paid! And so when we see a poppy worn, Let us reflect on the burden borne, By those who gave their very all When asked to answer their country s call That we at home in peace might live. Then wear a poppy! DIGITAL EDUCATION REVOLUTION (DER) Thank you to all parents who attended our DER meeting last Wednesday evening and also to the parents who responded to our on-line parent survey regarding the 1:1 funding by the Federal Government for the provision of computers to students from Year 9 onwards. Over 30 parents across year levels engaged in conversation and provided feedback to the College regarding the many issues surrounding this funding. It was heartening to see the parents acknowledge and appreciate the complexities with the distribution of this money, as it is only sufficient to provide students in two year levels with computers. Parents also appreciated that, as the payment is a one off, the long term sustainability of the program is not guaranteed. The feedback will be summarised and incorporated in our decision making as we move forward to a more definite position for 2011. We hope to have this program in place in Semester 2, 2011. Entrance via 316 Portrush Road A reminder to all parents that the entry via 316 Portrush Road onto school grounds is a vehicle entry only for staff and visitors. It is not a drop off entry point for students. If you are dropping off students for before school or after school activities, this must be done on Talbot Grove. Can I please ask all parents to cooperate by using Talbot Grove as the drop off point for all students. There have been instances when cars have blocked driveway access to residents homes, even though this may have been only for a few minutes. We thank you for your cooperation. TALBOT GROVE PICK-UP/DROP-OFF: TWO MINUTE ZONE I would also ask that all parents and carers please observe the two minute restrictions, as per the parking regulations. These restrictions enable the traffic to keep moving and are fair to everyone, provided that we all observe the regulations. As a community that values and respects each other, your courtesy and full cooperation is greatly appreciated. Rowing Update It was the second rowing regatta for this term last Saturday where the teams began to perform exceptionally well. In the Year 8 Quad Scull there were 2 wins and medals were awarded and Loreto also placed 1st as an invitational boat for a combination of year 9s and 10s (no medals awarded). The other crews had a mix of top 3 positions and were exceptionally well placed given the quality of the field. Junior crews will need to be at the CBC boatshed on the Torrens by 7.00am, 1st race approximately 8.00am dismissal 11.00am. 4 Music News Instrumental Music lessons 2011. Only students who wish to commence music tuition in 2011 need to complete an Application for Music Tuition form. It is assumed that any student currently learning an instrument will be continuing next year. If a student wishes to discontinue lessons or change to another instrument please advise the tutor and request a discontinuation form. An Application Form for the new instrument will then need to be submitted. Music tuition is undertaken on a semester basis. Forms are due for return to Christine Trahair in the Music department by Friday November 26th. Ms Christine Trahair Music Coordinator R-12 Social Justice Focus: Win/Win Situations With much work behind the scenes, the students have embraced the notion of and have a greater understanding of the term Fair Trade. Fair Trade is about better prices, decent working conditions, local sustainability, and fair terms of trade for farmers and workers in the developing world. By requiring companies to pay sustainable prices, Fair Trade addresses the injustices of conventional trade, which traditionally discriminates against the poorest, weakest producers. It enables them to improve their position and have more control over their lives. Hence, we are able to source Fair Trade products from many parts of the world and then sell them in our school during nominated lunch times during the term. The first Fair Trade Friday was extremely well-received by students and staff. The Gonzaga Youth Leaders decided this year to donate all profits raised from the Fair Trade Fridays to the St Vincent de Paul Fred s Van Program at the end of the year. On November 26 we will have the Fair Trade Christmas Friday in the foyer of the St Anne s Performing Arts Centre from 3.30 pm to 6.30 pm. We invite students, staff, parents and friends to come along to purchase an array of beautiful and affordable pieces. There will be a number of products which will cater for all tastes including: Indigenous art; skin care; accessories; clothing; jewellery; food stuffs; sporting goods; and home wares. Present on the afternoon will also be other senior students selling cupcakes outside the foyer. All money raised from the sale of these will go towards Childhood Heart Disease (CHD). In fact: Childhood heart disease (CHD) is the most common birth abnormality affecting one in 100 children. That is six babies every day across Australia born with some form of CHD - over 2000 per year. Heart Disease is the greatest killer of children under the age of 5 in Australia taking more lives than all other diseases combined. CHD takes more lives than all other childhood diseases combined, twice that of cancer. For 80% of the cases the cause is largely unknown so there is much to be done and many miraculous discoveries to be made. Prevention, detection, and early intervention are needed so that we can beat every form of childhood heart disease. Finally, as we approach the end of the year, we are reminded that Christmas is a lovely time spent with family, friends and receiving gifts. Yet not everyone has the same opportunity. This year the school community will be supporting Moore Street Day Centre with the Christmas Hamper drive. Over 1900 hampers will be distributed to needy people in Adelaide. The advertisement on page 7 of this letter advises you of the non-perishable and other new items your daughters can donate this year. The hamper collection ends Friday morning Week 7. 5 Junior Sports News R 2 Sports Day On Monday, we were blessed with perfect conditions for our rescheduled R-2 Sports Day. It was wonderful to see our junior athletes participate in the tabloid of athletic and novelty team events with such enthusiasm and tremendous team spirit. Thank you to our Year 6 students who provided outstanding leadership throughout the morning, in their coordination of the tabloid activities and their support of both staff and junior students. All classes were represented in the finals with all girls in 6G competing in the second round final a record effort. The girls in the winning team were presented with a $25 voucher from Dymocks at a recent assembly. Congratulations to all the Year 6 girls for their enthusiastic support of the Readers Cup competition. Mrs Holman Information Resources Coordinator R-7 Interschool Readers Cup and Year 6 representatives This term five girls from Year 6 volunteered to read five books and then compete in a Southern Areas Interschool Readers Cup competition for Year six and seven students. Students from seven schools from the government and independent sector competed. Our girls worked hard and independently to prepare themselves for the competition. They were placed third with only one point separating each of the top three teams. Emilia, Millicent and Lilli from 6W wrote: On Wednesday in Week 4, five girls from Year 6 represented Loreto at Belair School in the Southern Areas Interschool Readers Cup competition. Emilia Galluccio, Millicent Meegan, Lilli Heard from Year 6W, Ellen Tosolini Year 6B, Evelyn Green Year 6G went to participate. We were placed 3rd, Mitcham Primary was placed 2nd and Belair School won the competition. We had to read a series of books and answer questions about them. We were asked 5 questions per book. We also had a lovely recess, two platters of which were brought by Ms Smith and Mrs Holman. It was an enjoyable experience and we all had wonderful morning. I recommend this to all of the Year 5s. At assembly in Week 6 the girls were congratulated and in recognition of their fine effort each girl was presented with a $20 voucher from Dymocks. 6 2010 Textbook Exchange Loreto College Year Rec Year 9 Outstanding results in the Premier s Reading Challenge 2010 This year Loreto College has been selected as one of the schools where outstanding results in the PRC were gained by students. As a result two girls and two staff members were invited to attend the official reception at the University of SA on Friday 19th November. Emma Bleby 4G and Roxanne Lewis 8B have been selected to represent the College at the reception. Both girls read an outstanding number of titles in addition to the 12 required for the challenge. This year 15 students were awarded a Hall of Fame medal. This can only be won by students who began partaking in the challenge from its inception seven years ago. The following girls are to be commended on their commitment to enjoying literature and for having the perseverance to devote time to reading over an extended period. Congratulations are extended to the following winners of a Hall of Fame medal. Once again we are offering students the chance to dispose of old textbooks and the chance to acquire next year s (2011) textbooks at a reduced rate.
