President s Message Have a pleasant summer! Chantal L Espérance Borough President and Councillor, District of Domaine-Howard chantal.lesperance@ville.sherbrooke.qc.ca A new summer season full of promise is almost here! In addition to the many activities, celebrations and festivals being planned, movie evenings under the stars are being organized by Sherbrooke Loisirs-Action (formerly known as Loisirs Sherbrooke Nord) in four of our borough parks. I hope that you will enjoy them. Please note that some of our fellow citizens are longing for peaceful Sundays. If we can avoid doing noisy outdoor work on Sundays, we will all have more opportunity to relax! On behalf of my colleagues, I wish our borough youth an especially great summer holiday and encourage them to be active and careful when they are out and about. Sports & Recreation WHERE CAN YOU COOL OFF THIS SUMMER? Is the heat getting to you? Looking for a spot where you can cool off? The Borough of Jacques-Cartier offers residents access to a public outdoor pool and water activities. The pool is located in Parc de Saint-Alphonse-de-Liguori, the water activities at Parc de Saint-Boniface. The water activities are accessible seven days a week, from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., from June 23 to August 25. Please consult the section on aquatic activities for pool hours on pages 33. REGROUPEMENT DU BOIS BECKETT The trails in Beckett woods are a great spot for pedestrians to find peace, quiet, shade and fresh air in the heart of the city throughout the year. Visitors are asked to remain on the groomed trails to protect this fragile ecosystem. Please remember that biking is forbidden in this park at all times. Open air fires are prohibited in this area for very obvious reasons: the protection of the woods and surrounding residences. Uprooting plants and picking flowers and mushrooms is also forbidden in Beckett woods. Park enthusiasts thank and congratulate dog owners who keep their dogs on a leash, respecting both the municipal bylaw and those around them! Happy walking! 22 e GROUPE SCOUT HARFANG DES NEIGES The 22 e Groupe scout harfang des neiges is looking for adult outdoor enthusiasts interested in having a positive impact on the development of Sherbrooke youth for the following groups: Castors (ages 7 to 8), Louveteaux (ages 9 to 11), Éclaireurs (ages 12 to 14) and Pionniers (ages 15 to 17). This is a great way to develop your abilities and leadership skills with children and adolescents (aged 7 to 17). Free training in leadership, organizing activities, and outdoor pursuits will be given to help you take on this new challenge. It involves one meeting per week and several planning meetings throughout the year. Skills required are good humour, judgment, the taste for a challenge and the desire to learn. Get involved and gain skills sought by everyone! Information: Guy Drouin, 819-823-1271 drouin_guy@hotmail.com Information: 819-346-2766 155
Sports & Recreation SHERBROOKE LOISIRS-ACTION 1380 De Portland Blvd. 819-821-5780 infolsn@infolsn.qc.ca CHANGE IN LEGAL NAME LSN has changed its name and its image. A sign of the times, LSN has changed its name and visual identity. Thus, LSN has become Sherbrooke Loisirs-Action, a change made necessary due to the disappearance of the north ward following the creation of the new City of Sherbrooke (2002). In fact, the north ward, as many of us still call it, is now in fact in the centre of Sherbrooke s territory! This change also illustrates the dynamic nature of our organization that provides recreational programs for Borough residents as well as for the entire Sherbrooke population. The new logo features the name of the organization, two graphic characters and a curve linking these elements. It symbolizes concerted action, the organization s primary focus on residents, and the vitality of both the organization and its workers. The characters appearing to form a circle represent the organization s focus: recreation. MOVIES UNDER THE STARS This summer, Sherbrooke Loisirs-Action will be showing four movies for the reasonable price of a simple donation. Yes, you did read right! Enjoy an evening with family or friends and a change of pace for a voluntary donation. New films will be shown in four Borough parks. Shows begin at nightfall, at around 9 p.m. In case of bad weather, movies will be postponed to the following evening. Here is the schedule: Wednesday, July 4, Parc de Saint-Boniface, Tortues Ninja; Wednesday, July 11, Parc André-Viger, Quand est-ce qu on arrête?; Wednesday, July 25, Parc de Saint-Alphonse-de- Liguori, Les petits pieds du bonheur; Wednesday, August 1, Parc Marie-Victorin, Spiderman 3. Cultural Calendar SEEKING VOLUNTEERS FOR THE RENDEZ-VOUS D HOWARD EVENT The Rendez-vous d Howard organizing committee is looking for volunteers for the sixth annual edition of this event scheduled for Saturday, September 8, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., at Parc du Domaine-Howard (postponed to Sunday, September 9 in case of rain). Volunteer involvement is one of the key elements in the success of this cultural event. If you would like to be part of this memorable day, please contact Louise Gauvin at 819-821-1919. Community Life COMITÉ VIE DE QUARTIER NORD MAISON DES JEUNES AZIMUT NORD Neighbours want to treat themselves to peace and quiet on Sundays The Les dimanches en paix (peaceful Sundays) project is a citizen-based initiative emanating from the 2005 Forum hosted by the Comité vie de quartier nord (CVQN). In short, Les dimanches en paix consists of spreading the idea that by concentrating their noisy outdoor work on Saturdays, residents could collectively enjoy better quality of life on Sundays. In concrete terms, this means that everyone would make an effort, inasmuch as is possible, to use their lawnmower, hedge trimmer, circular saw or hammer on Saturdays rather than on Sundays. Little by little, the idea is taking root, without fanfare! Everyone is free to be part of this project or not. Note: This is not a question of dictating behaviour, but of spreading the idea that if everyone participates a little, Sundays could be peaceful in the whole neighbourhood!
