2 Welcome Note Coral Academy of Science Las Vegas Centennial Hills Campus team is proud of our wide ranging program of extra-curricular activities that provide memorable experiences for our students which allow them to pursue their interests and further develop a wide range of key transferable skills. We believe that education is a process of lifelong learning. We strongly encourage our students to get involved and to recognize the value of these activities as part of their development. We offer a wide variety of clubs and activities, during both advisory time and after school. This booklet highlights many of the exciting opportunities available to students. Please take the time to familiarize yourself with all the clubs, teams and activities that are offered. If you need further explanation or have questions to be answered, contact the club teacher or the Assistant Principals, Mr. Serdar at syuksek@coralacademylv.org and/or Ms. Barrett at tbarrett@coralacademylv.org.
After-School Club Procedures 3 Students are allowed to join only 1 club. Club fee must be turned in to the club teacher no later than the second meeting of the club. Clubs start at 2:35 PM and end at 3:15 PM. For detailed info see the club description. Dismissal location is listed by club on the following page. Please see the traffic plan map for the pick-up areas. Parents should park their cars and pick the children up from the dismissal area. With the exception of the handicap spaces, please do not park in any spot near Pick up areas 2 & 3 during club dismissal time. We will need all of these spaces for dismissal. Students must follow all school rules during the club time. Students should be picked up no later than the assigned pick-up time. Students who are picked up late more than once will be removed permanently from extracurricular activities and the paid fee will not be refunded. We strongly encourage parents to register their children for Champions in case of emergencies. Any child that is not registered with Champions and is not picked up within 10 minutes of the club dismissal time may be referred to Child Protective Service (CPS).

5 ARTS AND CRAFTS: (Club limited to 20 Kindergarten students) Club Fee: $5 Description of the Club: In Arts & Crafts club, we will be using our creativity to explore a variety of materials such as: colored pencils, markers, paint, play-doh, watercolors, and many others. Students will have the chance to use their imagination to create unique works of art. We will also have some seasonal projects and projects related to what we are learning in school. 6 THE KINGENEERS: (Club limited to 20 Kindergarten students) Club Fee: $5 Description of the Club: Students will work in pairs or teams to build letters, numbers, shapes, representations of boats, houses, bridges, and other structures. Students will be introduced to a variety of artistic styles and implement them in the club forming unique, individual, artistic work. 8 TEAM STEAM: (Club limited to 20 First grade students) Club Fee: $20 Description of the Club: Each week, students will rotate through explorative centers utilizing science, technology, engineering, art & math skills. Concepts will include building, reactions, problem solving, engineering, magnets, buoyancy, motion and many more! This interactive, explorative club is perfect for the budding young creative mind! 12 READING WORKSHOP BOOK CLUB (Available to 20 Second grade students) Club Fee: $5 Description of the Club: We will read the same book and discuss the different sections of the books we read. All the while students will learn reading strategies to help them increase their fluency and understanding of what they read. While they are having fun reading books that interest them, they will be become better readers, which effects all aspects of school life. 13 LEGO CLUB: (Club limited to 20 Second Grade students) Club Fee: $30 or bring your own large tub of Legos Description of the Club: Students will be challenged to design and create their own Lego structures based on Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math. Students will work independently, with a partner, and in small groups facilitated by the teacher. Socially, students will also practice demonstrating good sportsmanship conduct and team work. 15 STEAM CHALLENGE: (Club limited to 20 Second and Third grade students) Club Fee: $10 for supplies for challenges Description of the Club: Students work on STEAM challenges in this club. Each week students will receive a challenge related to a STEAM topic and will work to solve each challenge by engineering a solution to the challenge. 16 JEOPARDY!: (Club limited to 20 Third grade students) Club Fee: $10 Description of the Club: This students will play Jeopardy just like on television! Students will be contestants. To play the game, contestants will receive the clue first, and then must phrase their answer in the form of a question. Students will test their knowledge and skill in STEAM topics. 17 SCIENCE OLYMPIAD: (Club limited to 16 Third & Fourth grade students) Club Fee: $20 Description of the Club: Science Olympiad is an after school club for 3 rd and 4 th graders who are interested in competing in a spring Science Olympiad tournament. This is designed to attract and retain students interested in entering science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) degrees and careers. The challenging and selfmotivating events align with the Next Generation Standard Study (NGSS). The events are designed to enhance and strengthen both science content and process skills. Club sessions expose students to a variety of science areas and help prepare them for specific events. Teamwork is valued during these hands-on, interactive, and inquiry-based activities. September 11 th / May 14 th - This is a yearlong club. Mrs. Miller amiller@coralacademylv.org Students in grades 3 or 4 who are interested in science. 18 CORAL CODERS: (Club limited to 20 Third and Fourth grade students) Club Fee: $10 Description of the Club: This club introduces and implements computer science fundamentals through fun and interactive activities. We will be using the Code.org program to learn and explore computer science. It will also help build skills which correlate to the basis of robotics. 19 WEATHER CLUB: (Club limited to 20 Third and Fourth grade students) Club Fee: $5 Description of the Club: Students will have the opportunity to create mini weather phenomenon (hurricanes, tornados, clouds) in a small container. Students will learn about weather systems and how they are created. Students will learn and observe about how weather occurs. They will also keep a weather journal for observation and graphing. 20 POETRY: (Club limited to 25 Third & Fourth grade students) Club Fee: $10 Description of the Club: Poetry is a unique art form. Unlike a painting, sculpture or novel, poems we love can be carried around with us all the time in our heads. Poetry sometimes gets typecast as being fancy or difficult to understand or produce, but really, poetry is about enjoying language and playing with perspective. I believe poetry can be a fantastic way for our children to develop as writers, thinkers and performers. For our students, poetry can be a fun way to make sense of the world, to experiment with language, and to develop the skill of putting, as Coleridge described it, the best words in the best order. In Poetry Club this year, students will be introduced to a range of poets and their works; they will learn poems by heart, and work towards performing them; they will develop a Poet s toolbox by sharpening their skills of observation and vocabulary selection; they will explore different poetic forms, and they will write and edit their own poems, which we will present in an anthology at the end of the semester. 21 DETECTIVES I SPY: (Club limited to 20 3 rd through 5 th grade students) Club Fee: $10 Description of the Club: Students will solve I Spy puzzles varying in difficulty and solve a CSI crime scene with a small group facilitated by the teacher. Students will learn and practice problem solving skills, analytical thinking, strategy, reading and math. Socially, students will also learn good sportsmanship conduct and team work. 22 STUDENT COUNCIL: (Club limited to 17 3 rd thru. 6 th grade students) Club Fee: $10 Description of the Club: Students will work with teachers, PTO, and administration to gain leadership responsibilities by organizing and carrying out school activities and service projects. September 11 th / May 14 th - This is a yearlong club. Ms. Jemison rjemison@coraclacademylv.org Students must fill out a student council application and list the position they are applying for. Students need to get three recommendations from teachers. Grade levels will then vote members in. fee. 23 MEET THE MASTER S ART: (Club limited to 20 Third thru. Sixth grade students) Club Fee: $25 Description of the Club: Meet the Masters is an Art Appreciation Club. My mission is to expose young children to the world of Art in an exciting and interactive way; allowing them to express and share their thoughts and feelings while learning about the Great Masters of Art and their paintings. GEOGRAPHIC AND SPELLING BEE: (Club limited to 20 Third thru. Sixth grade students) 24 Club Fee: None Description of the Club: Students will practice geography and spelling skills in order to participate in the National Geography or National Spelling Bee. Each year thousands of schools in the United States participate in the National Geographic Bee using materials prepared by the National Geographic Society. The contest is designed to motivate students to learn about the world and how it works. Students in grades four through eight are eligible for this entertaining and challenging competition. With a top prize of a $50,000 college scholarship. September 11 th / May 14 th - This is a yearlong club. Mrs. Parker lparker@coralacademylv.org Must be a 4 th, 5 th, or 6 th grade student. 25 MATH OLYMPIAD: (Club limited to 20 Fourth thru. Sixth grade students) Club Fee: $10 Description of the Club: Math Olympiad is a math problem solving contest for teams in grades 4 through 6. Students will work on challenging math problems and then take five monthly contests, administered from November through March. Five additional days a year will be required for the monthly contest. They are Tuesday, November 14, December 12, January 16, February 13, and March 6. 14, January 16, February 13, and March 6., and Tuesday November September 11 th / May 14 th - This is a yearlong club. 26 SCRABBLE: (Club limited to 20 Fourth thru. Sixth grade students) Club Fee: $5 Description of the Club: Scrabble Club is a fun, competitive and challenging new club, which will focus on vocabulary and spelling. Each week we will have a theme to follow. "Scrabblers" will need to use words that fit the theme of the week. Weekly themes will be chosen together at our first meeting and mapped out for the semester. Students can look ahead to the upcoming themes and prepare word lists or bring reference books that fit the theme. Weekly themes can range from "Nouns" to "Animals" to "Space" or "Engineering". This club will be a great way to build vocabulary in a variety of subjects! Ms. Trafton atrafton@coralacademylv.org Maturity, focus, and a desire to learn new vocabulary. Must be a 4 th, 5 th, or 6 th grade student. Please send a snack and water (no juice or colored drinks) and please pick the student up on time. Other Info: Club will be held in Ms. Trafton s classroom #211. Students must bring a notebook to keep a list of vocabulary words. Limited to 20 students. **We will be focusing on Tier II and Tier III vocabulary. Tier II words are used by mature language users across several content areas. Because of their lack of redundancy in oral language, Tier II words present challenges to students who primarily meet them in print. Examples of Tier II words are: obvious, complex, establish and verify. Tier III words are not frequently used except in specific content areas or domains. Tier III words are central to building knowledge and conceptual understanding within the various academic domains. Medical, legal, scientific and mathematical terms are all examples Tier III words.
27 FLL ROBOTICS: (Club limited to 16 Fourth thru. Sixth grade students) Club Fee: $120 Description of the Club: In our FLL Robotics Club, students will work collectively to learn about the First Lego League s core values and participate in competition(s) around our Las Vegas valley. Students will also gain experience with robot engineering and design, as well as programming as they complete various challenges with peers on a team. Note that this club will require some Saturday participation and competition(s) around October-December. Please email Mr. Upton with questions if you need any clarity on this club. September 11 th / Dec 18 th Mr. Upton bupton@coralacademylv.org Must be a 4 th, 5 th, or 6 th grade student. Able to pick up student on time at the conclusion of each club meeting. Some Saturday sessions October through December and a weekend competition toward the end of the semester. Other Info: **Please note that demand is high for this club and it fills quickly. If your child does not get in, there will be more opportunity in the second semester of this school year.
28 SHOW TIME CLUB: (Club limited to 16 Fourth thru. Sixth grade students) Club Fee: None Description of the Club: The club will put together different talents that will perform on different occasions like the Winter Concert or some other event organized by the school. Instrumentalists, singers, and stand up comedy actors are welcome. The instrumentalists are required to bring their own instruments. The sound system is given by the school. 29 YEARBOOK: (Club limited to 20 Fifth and Sixth grade students) Club Fee: None Description of the Club: Students will help organize and design the 2017/2018 yearbook using Chromebooks. The program requires students to work together to choose backgrounds, art, and layouts for each page. We will also make and distribute posters for yearbook sales. Please note: Students will NOT be taking photos for the yearbook. However, they will learn how to submit and organize photos within the program for any photos they take on their own time. 33 School Climate Leadership Team (Available to six, 6 th grade students) Club Fee: $5 Description of the Club: Student members of the School Climate Leadership Team (SCLT) serve as Subject-Matter-Experts (SMEs) in our school's Character Education Program and Problem Solving/Positive Choices Program; student members serve as peer leaders and mentors to support a positive school climate that promotes a safe and respectful learning environment. SCLT may also assist with organizing & hosting special school events, serving as school climate leaders and student body representatives of the school. Staff: Ms. M., School Counselor lmilicevic@coralacademylv.org An interest in leadership skills such as public speaking, modeling positive behavior, mentoring peers, and solving problems. Comfortable speaking and co- presenting in front of other students in classrooms and at assemblies; comfortable using presentation voice.
