In crafting the psitin annuncement, the search cmmittee shuld bear in mind that the mre pen the psitin, the mre diverse the candidate pl will be. The psitin shuld be well advertised. The search cmmittee shuld think carefully abut apprpriate venues fr ads. A print ad is apprpriate, fr example, when recruiting internatinal faculty. Fr every search, faculty can serve as ambassadrs, taking business cards t cnferences and talking t faculty clleagues at ther institutins. Units shuld develp a standard letter t acknwledge receipt f applicatins. The letter shuld include a sense f the search timeline and the search cmmittee chair s cntact infrmatin. It shuld be sent as sn as pssible after receipt f an applicatin. [See Sample Letter 1.] The same individual shuld plan t generate all crrespndence t ensure cnsistency thrughut the search. PLANNING FOR ON CAMPUS VISITS Once finalists have been identified, all f the n campus visits shuld take place within a narrw timeframe. When the finalists have agreed t cme fr an n campus interview, thse nt selected fr ncampus interviews shuld be infrmed in timely fashin. [See Sample Letter 2.] Each candidate shuld be met at the airprt by a search cmmittee member and taken t the htel chsen as the site fr all candidates stays. Units may want t cnsider ldging prspective faculty ff campus t intrduce them t the city as well as t the campus. It is imprtant that all candidates receive equal treatment in husing, meals, expsure t the campus and Clumbus, etc.
Recruiting units will want t make an effrt t sell the university t candidates during their visit. AFTER THE ON CAMPUS VISITS A decisin abut the first chice candidate shuld be made immediately after the last candidate s n campus visit. After cnfirming the appintment with the dean, the hiring unit s chair shuld make a verbal ffer as sn as pssible and shuld give the candidate a specific deadline (perhaps a week) t respnd. The finalist might be encuraged t return t Clumbus with a partner t lk further at Clumbus, real estate here, etc. This is especially apprpriate if the hire is at a senir rank.
