Overview of Math PA Core Standards Fall 2015

Agenda Expectations of the Math PA Core Standards envision Common Core Math 2.0 Parent Resources Questions

DID YOU KNOW?

What are the Common Core Standards? The standards were drafted by experts and teachers from across the country and are designed to ensure students are prepared for today s entry-level careers, freshman-level college courses, and workforce training programs. They focus on developing the critical-thinking, problem-solving, and analytical skills students will need to be successful. Common Core Standards were adopted by 42 states- states had the flexibility to make some adjustments to the standards. The PA version is known as the PA Core Standards. Common Core Standards are not a curriculum. They define what students should know and be able to do at each grade level.

Common Core Standards Mathematical Content Standards What students must learn Mathematical Practice Standards How students demonstrate application of knowledge, skills and understandings

Shifts in Mathematics (Content Standards) Shift 1 Focus Teachers significantly narrow and deepen the scope of how time and energy is spent in the math classroom. They do so in order to focus deeply on only the concepts that are prioritized in the standards. Shift 2 Coherence Principals and teachers carefully connect the learning within and across grades so that students can build new understanding onto foundations built in previous years. Shift 3 Fluency Students are expected to have speed and accuracy with simple calculations; teachers structure class time and/or homework time for students to memorize, through repetition, core functions. Shift 4 Deep Understanding Students deeply understand and can operate easily within a math concept before moving on. They learn more than the trick to get the answer right. They learn the math. Shift 5 Application Students are expected to use math and choose the appropriate concept for application even when they are not prompted to do so. Shift 6 Dual Intensity Students are practicing and understanding. There is more than a balance between these two things in the classroom both are occurring with intensity. 6

Standards of Mathematical Practices There are 8 Standards of Math Practices. They describe the skills that are to be developed in students. The end goal is that our children can work strategically, diligently and purposely through real-world math problems.
