TurningPoint: Quick Start Guide What is TurningPoint? TurningPoint is an Audience Response System (ARS) used in face-to-face teaching to add interactivity into your presentations. TurningPoint integrates with PowerPoint via a plug-in to offer interactivity, in the form of questions & messaging to your slides. Students respond to questions using their phone, tablet or laptop, and the results are displayed instantly, allowing you to discuss the results. TurningPoint allows presenters to poll multiple choice questions as well as numerical, short answer, or essay type questions. TurningPoint can also be used to receive questions from the audience through a live messaging system. Students can answer questions individually or you can set up team competitions where students can work together to answers questions to gain points. TurningPoint can be used in all University lecture theatres and most other teaching spaces. TurningPoint technology can help to support teaching & learning by: Generating points for discussion in your class Checking your audience s understanding of a topic Informing the direction for your teaching session Create team based activities and competitions Receiving questions or comments during a lecture See https://www.turningtechnologies.com/support/hardware for Android, ios and web user guides.

To use TurningPoint within your presentation you must complete the following steps Before the session: 1. Download the latest version of the software from the Software Center. 2. Create a TurningPoint account- https://account.turningtechnologies.eu/account/ You must use your @exeter.ac.uk email address to register. Once you have entered your email address you can select Create an account and then follow the on-screen instructions. 3. Your account will need to be licenced to allow you to use TurningPoint. Please contact the e- Learning team (e-learning@exeter.a.cuk) to licence the account. 4. With your account set up you can now create your TurningPoint presentation. You can create a new presentation with TurningPoint questions, or you can add TurningPoint questions into an existing PowerPoint presentation. Please refer to the TurningPoint support website for guides on creating questions and the various polling optionshttps://www.turningtechnologies.com/user-guides/turningpoint 5. Once you have created a presentation with some TurningPoint questions simply save the PowerPoint (pptx) file. You can save the file to your University OneDrive account so that you have access within the lecture theatre, or you can save a copy to a USB memory stick if you prefer. Note: You can test your presentation in your office if you have a mobile phone, tablet or laptop with internet access. In the lecture theatre: 1. Log in to the lectern PC using your regular University username & password 2. Locate TurningPoint 8 from the programme list, or Double-click on the TurningPoint desktop iconif available. You must open TurningPoint before opening PowerPoint. 3. If you are prompted to select a region, choose Europe and press connect. 4. Select Sign In

5. When TurningPoint first opens you will be required to sign in. It is recommended that you try signing in before you use TurningPoint with any students. Sign in using your university email address and the password you chose during the registration process. If you use TurningPoint frequently then you can you can save time signing in by allowing TurningPoint to remember your credential. This will work on your office computer and within lecture theatres however you will need to enter your credentials for each new computer or lecture theatre where TurningPoint is used. Once you are signed in the TurningPoint software will open. Select PowerPoint Polling from the TurningPoint dashboard (see below)

If you have correctly opened TurningPoint, the main menu bar in your presentation should include the TurningPoint tab, as shown below. Now you can open your presentation file using the File>Open, alternatively, you can locate the file as you would normally and double click on it to open within PowerPoint. As long as TurningPoint is already running you can open the presentation file however you prefer.

Select Mobile Responses in the TurningPoint menu.

You can select a reserved Session ID from the drop down menu or reserve a new ID using the reserve button. Session ID s should be kept short (minimum 4 characters) and it should be simple for students to enter on their phone or tablet. Module codes work well if you are using TurningPoint within your lectures. You can reserve more than one session ID and you will be able to choose which ID to use at the start of each presentation. Once you have selected a session ID you can select the Start Session button.

A session status dialogue box will appear to confirm your connection and the session ID you have chosen. If you are happy with the Session ID then you can close this window. You are now ready to start the Powerpoint presentation. Depending on when you will be using TurningPoint within your presentation, you can either ask the students to log in at the start, or wait until you are about to start polling. Tip: You could include an instruction slide in your presentation and paste in the Session ID, or you can display the session ID within the question slides by selecting the display icon shown below. This icon should be available within the polling menu at the top or your question slide.

The students can type the ID when prompted in the mobile App to join the session. Once you have logged in and given the students the session ID then you can begin the presentation and navigate through the slides. When you reach a question slide, the TurningPoint questions will automatically appear on the student s devices and they can respond instantly.

You should see the number of responses going up in the polling menu at the top of the screen. Once you are happy that you have received all of the responses then you can close the polling by moving forward in the presentation as you would normally with PowerPoint (click mouse, press arrow key, space bar, pointer button etc.) and the results will be displayed on the screen and on the student s devices.

Managing TurningPoint data TurningPoint records all polling data for each session, and this data is available to export in a number of formats for you to review. Saving session data Click the Save Session button on the main TurningPoint toolbar to save the session data from the audience. Note: Ensure you use the save button on the main TurningPoint toolbar, otherwise you ll only be saving your PowerPoint slide and not the data you ve just gathered. If you have logged into the lectern PC using your University username, you can save the file into your My Documents area. If the PC is already logged in when you arrive you will need to save the session data to a USB memory stick. These data may be saved in a number of different formats - remember to select the format that you require by clicking on the File type drop-down menu and choosing the required format. Follow these steps each time you use TurningPoint as part of your presentation. For more information on TurningPoint please refer to the full guides available online.
