Also known as the The Potteries the area has been world famous for pottery and ceramics for over 300 years. Excellent sports facilities are available locally. Premiership football team, Stoke City, play at the Britannia Stadium and Port Vale FC play at nearby Vale Park. The city s theatres stage hit Broadway shows and big names from comedy and music. English Language Summer Schools We want to make sure that your time at Staffordshire University is not just exciting and challenging, but also extremely rewarding. Together with the Students Union, we provide a whole range of specialist support services, don t worry if English isn t your first language, this shouldn t be a barrier to your studies. Course Dates: The course lasts from one to four weeks from July 23rd to August 19th and you can choose how many weeks you wish to stay to improve your English, from one week to the full four weeks. Course Fees: Fees paid will include teaching, accommodation, weekly excursions and social events and activities, including access to the Stanley Matthews Sports Centre at a subsidised rate. There will be weekly excursions to a variety of tourist attractions such as the historic City of Chester or the wonderful countryside nearby in the Staffordshire Moorlands, Derbyshire Peak District. Further outings will see you visit the magnificent coastline of Wales and you will have the opportunity to take additional excursions to such places as London and Edinburgh, these will be at an extra cost. Location: Stoke Campus Staffordshire University Staffordshire University Summer Schools are an excellent way for you to sample university life in the UK, improve your English and find out if you would like to continue your studies at the University. Who is it for? The Summer Schools are for students aged over 18 with IELTS levels 3-7 who want to improve their language skills and find out more about British language, culture and history. The focus of the teaching is on speaking and communication skills, with daily lessons focusing on themes related to British life and culture. Students will have ample opportunity to improve their vocabulary, with the focus being on using English in everyday situations, so that students will be able to use the language studied in the classroom. Students are assessed on the first day of the course via a placement test and placed into groups for the rest of the course. You can be confident that you will be with other students of a similar level and you can develop your language skills at an ideal pace. Accommodation: We offer accommodation on our Stoke campus to all Summer School students in our Halls of Residence. Most rooms are for single occupancy, some have en-suite bathrooms and all have shared kitchen facilities for self-catering, however, there are many places to eat nearby. All on campus rooms have Internet access. Teaching Hours: You will receive a minimum of 12 hours teaching per week four morning classes of three hours each, Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. There are optional afternoon classes offering eight further hours of study on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. Wednesdays are excursion days. English Language Summer Schools 3
Summer School Activities You can choose to come for between one and four weeks, depending on how many weeks or which dates you choose to attend your activities will include the following*: Week One: Pick up from Manchester Airport and settling into halls of residence City and Campus Tour Welcome orientation by the Dean of the Business School, Professor Susan Foreman English culture briefing and course induction Placement assessment Local Tour Museum Visit Classes Themes include British history Excursion preparation Day trip to the historic City of Chester, with a river tour, the city s Roman history and a shopping trip to Cheshire Oaks outlet village Afternoon excursion to the City of Birmingham* York City Tour including York Minster, one of Europe s greatest gothic cathedrals* Optional tour of the Jorvik Viking Museum* Week Two: Classes: Themes include British food, culture and customs Sports activities Excursion preparation Afternoon cultural visit Afternoon trip to Stratford-upon-Avon, home of William Shakespeare* Classes Themes include : Scotland. Free time Quiz on Britain and the World Excursion to the Lake District of Northern England* Excursion to Edinburgh - with a visit to Edinburgh castle* Excursion to North Wales Visiting Conway Castle and Llandudno Week Three: Classes Theme includes: Education around the World Visit to the University allotment (vegetable garden) learning more about British fruit and vegetables Sports/free time: two afternoons Excursion: The City of Cambridge Countryside excursion, visiting a typical English village and a farm shop Week Four: Afternoon of free time Excursion to Trentham Gardens, a local attraction Excursion to the Derbyshire Dales: Buxton, Chatsworth and Bakewell Afternoon Sports: Mini Olympics Classes Award certificates for the Summer School Farewell Party * Self Pay. These excursions are not included in the Summer School fee paid and will incur an additional charge. Time will be allocated for packing / unpacking, preparation for excursions, food shopping and meal preparation and students will be supported during their stay to undertake these activities.
