Visit www.ncl.ac.uk/biomed to find out more about the School of Biomedical Sciences Biomedical and Biomolecular Sciences Biomedical and biomolecular sciences cover a diverse range of subjects relating to medicine and the understanding of life processes at all levels, from the molecular and cellular to the whole organism. By learning about these processes, we can understand what goes wrong in disease and use this knowledge to help develop new treatments and diagnostic tests. National Centre of Excellence Research conducted in our acclaimed institutes is ranked amongst the top 10 in the UK. As well as conducting world-leading research, our staff inform and provide students with the highest level of research-informed teaching. This means you ll graduate with cutting-edge. Consistently high scores in the National Student Survey recognise our degrees as among the very best in the country. Flexible degree programme You spend the first year and a half exploring a wide range of different aspects of the biomedical and biomolecular sciences before deciding which area you want to specialise in for the remainder of your degree. This means you can transfer from one degree to another at the end of your first year should you wish to. Gain valuable employability skills We offer a wide range of opportunities for you to gain work experience (some on a competitive basis) including: a laboratory assistant scheme in our research institutes; vacation studentships in a research, or industry lab; and international exchanges with our prestigious partners in Europe, Singapore and Australia. Add a professional placement It is important to stand out in the graduate employment market, so all of our programmes are available with an optional professional placement year - see opposite. Tailor your degree to your interests In third year, we have tailor-made a range of optional modules for you to boost your employability in areas that we know our graduates progress to. Choose from business for the bioscientist, healthcare organisation and practice, science communication, and specialist research modules. Develop as a researcher All students undertake their own original research in one of the Faculty of Medical Sciences' top-ranked research institutes. Projects may be laboratory based or tailored to your vocational aspirations. Students on our Integrated Masters' degrees complete a year-long research project, providing in-depth experience of the laboratory environment and providing a foundation for a career in research. Learn in specialist teaching and research facilities Enjoy a state-of-the-art learning environment, with four specialist teaching laboratories, an extensive Medical Sciences library and dedicated computer clusters. Take your knowledge further Gain exposure to research at the highest level in our biomedicine+ programme and our institutes extensive research seminar programmes. Excellent student support You will have a personal tutor and a student mentor. A team of specialist course advisers and senior tutor operate an open-door policy for all students. League Table Ranking Biomedical and Biomolecular Sciences at Newcastle is highly regarded. We are a National Centre of Excellence in biomedical research. We also achieved between 91-95% for overall student satisfaction across all of our subjects in the National Student Survey 2015. Professional Accreditation Our Biomedical Sciences (Integrated Master's) MSci Honours programme has been accredited by the Royal Society of Biology. Advanced degree accreditation by the Society recognises academic excellence in the biosciences, and highlights degrees that educate the research and development leaders of the future. The advanced accreditation criteria require evidence that graduates from the programme meet defined sets of learning outcomes, including gaining a substantial period of research experience. Placement Year All of our programmes are available with an optional professional placement year. Once you are here, placement opportunities will be advertised and you will be fully supported to apply. When you have secured a placement you will be automatically transferred onto the relevant professional placement year programme. Transfer to Medicine or Dentistry Any student registered on one of our degrees may apply to transfer to Stage 1 of either our Medicine or Dentistry degree programmes at the end of their first year. Both schemes are competitive with limited places available. Selection is based on your academic performance, a UKCAT score, a personal statement and, if shortlisted, an interview. DNA replication and gene expression the molecular basis of cancer and chronic disease Biochemistry is responsible for a large number of scientific breakthroughs in medicine and biotechnology. It can lead to a rewarding career and graduates are in high demand. Biochemistry (Integrated Master's) MSci Honours UCAS code C701 4 Years If you are interested in a research career in biochemistry, this Integrated Master's degree equips you with the advanced practical skills and knowledge you'll need. This MSci degree is similar in content to our Biochemistry BSc Honours degree, but it includes a fourth year of study at Master's level. This helps you develop advanced practical and academic skills needed for your future career. Graduates with expertise in biochemistry are in high demand. The fourth year comprises an extended laboratory-based research project, to advance your research skills to a professional level. It also involves a specialist module on Protein Structure and Function and a further module selected from an extensive list offered by our Research Institutes (including Ageing and Health, Biomaterials and Tissue Engineering, and Cancer Studies). This gives you the opportunity to work alongside our world-leading experts and experience specialist facilities. Biomedical Genetics BSc Honours UCAS code B901 3 Years Biochemistry BSc Honours UCAS code C700 3 Years Interested in what causes diseases like cancer? Want to help develop new drug treatments? Biochemistry is the key to understanding how diseases occur and can be treated. Biochemistry is the study of life at the molecular level. You ll study a wide range of organisms, from bacteria all the way up to humans. Topics include: Interested in how genetic information passes from one generation to the next? Want to explore the causes of hereditary diseases? This degree gives you in-depth knowledge of how genes affect health and disease. Genetics is the study of how DNA is transmitted between generations. Also how it is decoded to determine our individual characteristics. You'll learn about how: hereditary material passes on genetic information from one generation to the next genes are controlled and how they control development 3

mutations and changes can lead to a wide range of medical diseases - the 's Institute of Genetic Medicine feeds into our degrees Biomedical Genetics (Integrated Master's) MSci Honours UCAS code B903 4 Years It also helps you understand disease processes. You'll learn how we can develop new treatments for cancer, Alzheimer s, TB and more.
