Position Description ACADEMIC VICE PRINCIPAL JESUIT HIGH SCHOOL Portland, Oregon THE SCHOOL: Jesuit High School, located in Portland, Oregon, was founded in 1956 by the Society of Jesus and is part of a 450-year Jesuit educational tradition. Jesuit High School is a non-profit, coeducational college-preparatory school for grades 9-12 that serves 1,245 students of all religious faiths and backgrounds. Jesuit's curriculum is founded in the educational philosophy of Jesuit founder, St. Ignatius of Loyola. THE SCHOOL S MISSION: Jesuit education fosters the harmonious development of the adolescent student s gifts: spiritual, religious, intellectual, physical, emotional, and aesthetic. Jesuit High School hopes to accomplish this development by demonstrating a personal concern for individuals, a special concern for the poor, an articulate wisdom, enthusiasm, and a sense of community. In so doing, the school strives to graduate leaders who are committed to serve God and their fellow men and women. Our goal is to develop students with a profound sense of justice founded in love, i.e., leaders who are "men and women for others." GENERAL POSITION DESCRIPTION: The Academic Vice Principal reports directly to the Principal and oversees curriculum development, teacher evaluation, counseling, the library, scheduling, and student reports (including grades). The Academic Vice Principal works closely with Counselors, Department Chairs, Diversity Director, Librarian, Network Administrator, Admissions Director, Registrar, Director of Thomas Edison, Professional Development Coordinator, Vice Principal for Student Life, Vice Principal for Administrative Services, and Principal in the administration of the programs under their supervision. In addition, the Academic Vice Principal meets regularly with other administrators and aids in the development of Jesuit High School policies. 1

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES: Responsibilities: I. Curriculum: The Academic Vice Principal: A. Chairs monthly Academic Council meetings and develops programs for Department Chair training and professional development. B. Helps Chairs to conduct annual reviews of curriculum and departmental goals and objectives, and seeks appropriate resources to assist in curriculum and instructional improvement. C. Oversees publication of annual academic catalog, which describes courses to be offered the following school year. D. Coordinates school-wide interdisciplinary curriculum development. E. Coordinates departmental book orders. G. Supervises and supports new academic offerings II. III. IV. Teacher Hiring and Evaluation: The Academic Vice Principal: A. Assists Principal in teacher hiring and Department Chair selection process. B. Develops method and schedule for observation and evaluation of teachers. C. Reviews Department Chairs evaluations of department members. D. Observes and evaluates classroom teachers on biennial basis. Counseling: The Academic Vice Principal: A. Supervises the Counseling Department. B. Meets regularly with all counselors. D. Works with counselors to administer and report results of standardized tests, including AP tests, EXPLORE, PLAN, and PSATs. E. Manages the academic dishonesty/integrity process, including communication among teachers, parents, counselors, and students. Scheduling: The Academic Vice Principal: A. Manages the Forecasting process each spring. B. Creates the Master Schedule in SchoolMaster. C. Balances student and teacher schedules. D. Plans and manages student registration each August. E. Facilitates September drop/add process. F. Oversees final examinations each semester, including distribution and oversight of exams. V. Student Reports/Grading: The Academic Vice Principal: A. Oversees student progress toward graduation. B. Works with Registrar to gather and distribute grade reports. C. Arranges other appropriate avenues of communication among students, parents, teachers, counselors, and administrators to ensure students academic success. D. Works with teachers and counselors to identify students in need of academic support, including those on academic probation. E. Creates programs to help struggling students, including progress reports, study halls, and academic contracts. VI. Professional Development A. Collaborates with Professional Development Director. B. Assists with new teacher training and evaluation. C. Directs Second-Year Vets program, and helps to plan and facilitate Province second-year teacher inservice. 2

Other Areas of Responsibility: The Academic Vice Principal: A. Reviews academic transcripts and consults with Admissions Director on applicants to Jesuit High School (freshmen and transfers). B. Operates as JHS liaison to Thomas Edison High School. C. Serves as a member of the JHS Board Academic committee and the JHS Technology Committee, as well as other committees as directed by the Principal. D. Oversees all academic budgets. E. Works with Diversity Director to develop academic support programs. F. Contributes to Principal s Newsletter, Parent and Student Portals via the jesuitportland.org website, and other school publications. G. Oversees librarian and supports library programs. H. Collaborates with Principal, VPSL, and Summer Session Director on preparation of Summer Session curriculum and recommendation letters. EVALUATION The Principal will evaluate the Academic Vice Principal each year. The evaluation will be based on the Profile of the Jesuit Educator and the duties and responsibilities listed above. Information for the evaluation will be gathered from the administration, faculty and staff of Jesuit High School. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS FOR APPLICANTS: Master s Degree and extensive experience as a successful classroom teacher and educational leader. Teaching license and administrative license, or willingness to enroll immediately in an administrative licensure program. A knowledge of and commitment to Catholic and Jesuit secondary schools is strongly preferred. Jesuit High School encourages visionary leaders of diverse backgrounds to apply for this position. Founded in 1956, Jesuit High has been a coeducational school since 1993. 23% of students are students of color. 76% of students are Catholic. 25.5% of students receive $2.1 million in need-based financial aid. Average class size is 24, with a student/teacher ratio of 18:1. Campus Ministry and Christian Service Activities 750 students attend voluntary weekly liturgies. 1,188 students (94% of our student body) participate in voluntary overnight retreats annually. The Class of 2011 volunteered 36,301 hours to 260 different programs and agencies, including local and international service project (an average of 125 hours per student). 49,123 pounds of food and more than $8,900 were collected for 319 families in Jesuit High's Annual Food Drive in December 2010. In addition, $8,400 was raised for adopted families (gifts and food). 60 seniors in the Class of 2011 served as Eucharistic Ministers and 9 served as Sacristans. 94% of the Class of 2012 attended the 12-mile Senior Pilgrimage in fall 2011. Community Characteristics 94 faculty members, 68% with advanced degrees (of those, 3% have doctorate degrees). Jesuit High School's teachers have an average of 18 years teaching experience. 6 Jesuit priests and 2 Jesuit scholastics reside on campus. Athletics at Jesuit High School More than 790 students (73% of the student body) participate in athletics during their time at Jesuit High. 8-time recipient of Oregonian Cup for overall academic performance, activities, athletics, and school sportsmanship. 5

During the 2010-11 season, JHS teams won 11 state championships and 18 out of 22 teams finished in the top three in state. Won 17 consecutive OACA All-Sports Awards (top athletic high school program in the state). Offer 22 varsity sports, and 56 teams overall (including JV and freshman teams). For the past five years, MaxPreps/CBS Sports.com ranked Jesuit s athletic program #1 in the country twice, and Jesuit has remained in the top 25 athletic programs in the nation (ranked #2, #4 and #23 in the other three years).
