The future

In 2011 the DFE introduced a new measure of student achievement called the English Baccalaureate (E-Bacc). It recognises the achievements of students that achieve grades A*-C in a broad range of key subjects. These key subjects are: o GCSE Maths o GCSE English (Language) o GCSE Science (Double or Triple) o GCSE French o GCSE History or Geography English Baccalaureate

The evidence from the DFE, media, universities and colleges is that the E-Bacc continues to grow in relevance, so it is important we encourage those students that are able to achieve it to do so. Recent changes to A levels have also focused on the importance of facilitating (E-Bacc) subjects. English Baccalaureate

What are BTEC/Vocational qualifications? The BTEC/Cambridge National courses that we are offering are vocational and provide an alternative to the more traditional GCSE route. They differ from GCSE in that they are mainly assessed through coursework: each student will produce a portfolio of assignments, upon which the qualification grading will be based (Pass, Merit, Distinction). 25% of these courses are now externally examined, via an external test, so revision will be essential. Vocational courses

There are 2 different Pathway routes through Key Stage 4: RED RED Pathway E-Bacc French compulsory History/Geog compulsory BLUE Pathway Non Non E-Bacc No No French History/Geog compulsory We will issue students with an e-mail linking to a personalised options form for the Pathway that we believe best suits their abilities. The 2 Pathways

All students are also studying qualifications in: GCSE English Language and GCSE Literature GCSE Mathematics GCSE Triple Science or GCSE Double Science (depends upon set) GCSE RS (full course) Pathways - Core

Students on the Red Pathway will choose: GCSE History or GCSE Geography GCSE French Any 2 other options * * Students will continue with 1 of these option choices into Years 10 and 11. Red Pathway

Students on the Blue Pathway will choose: GCSE History or GCSE Geography Any 3 other option subjects * * Students will continue with 2 of these option choices into Years 10 and 11. Blue Pathway

This year, we will be bringing Year 9 into Key Stage 4 alongside Years 10 and 11, so the curriculum is changing to provide a wider range of choices and more time in the subjects that students want to study, in order to give them a better start. To facilitate this, we would like to bring some of the options choices forward to begin in Year 9. Some subjects will start GCSEs straight away in Year 9, other subjects will offer Foundation courses that prepare students for the full subjects in Years 10/11. Y9 options

The options this year in Design Technology have changed. All DT options start GCSEs straight away in Year 9. There are now 4 possible routes: GCSE Food Preparation & Nutrition GCSE DT: All materials route GCSE DT: Textiles route GCSE DT: Graphics route Design Technology

All students should also choose 2 reserve option choices. We will do our very best to accommodate as many first choices as possible, but we may not be able to offer this for everyone, depending upon timetabling and clashes. Please note - some courses may not run if the numbers of interested students are very low. Pathways

Choices

We would advise students to take no more than 1 BTEC or vocational option subject. The following pairs of courses are very similar and students should therefore NOT choose both of them: GCSE Child Development and Cambridge Nationals Health & Social GCSE Art and BTEC Art & Design GCSE Computer Science and Cambridge Nationals Creative imedia Any of the DT Material routes (eg, DT:All materials and DT:Textiles) Pathways advice
