ROYAL ROADS UNIVERSITY WELCOMES YOU TO INTERNATIONAL EDUCATION WEEK November 17th - 21st, 2014 Thevi Pather Director, Office of Global Advancement Royal Roads University, together with universities in Canada and over 100 countries around the world, will be observing International Education Week from November 17th to 21st, 2014. Canadians value their connection to the world; international education enhances this connection through study abroad, internationalization of the curricula and welcoming international students to our campuses. The purpose of International Education Week is to raise the community s awareness of international education and the contribution it makes in preparing Canadians for living and learning in a globally connected world. FEATURE EVENTS OFFICIAL OPENING LAUNCH November 17 h 11:45-13:00 Join us for the kick-off of International Education Week, starting with a campus flag parade, followed by an opening ceremony and International Fashion Show, where RRU students and staff will model traditional clothing from around the globe. We will also be displaying photo contest submissions for voting! BOLLYWOOD DANCE CLASS November 18 th 12:00-13:00 Our very own Viral Mangukia, MGM student and Student Activities Assistant, will lead an introduction to Bollywood Dance. Come join us to immerse yourself in the rhythms and traditions of India. Comfortable footwear (or just your bare feet) and comfortable clothing are the only pre-requisites! Get ready to boogie to some Bollywood beats!

NAVIGATING THE GLOBAL CLASSROOM November 19 th 11:30-13:00 Have you ever wondered what it is like to be a student in a foreign land? Join us for a facilitated conversation with a panel of international students speaking about their experiences in a classroom in their home countries. Through sharing perspectives, we seek to understand the different values, attitudes, and practices that a diverse student population brings to our teaching and learning culture. This will be a wonderful opportunity for staff, faculty and students alike to learn about the cross-cultural differences that make international education unique. Starting with an interactive game of Barnga, a classic simulation game that highlights cultural differences, participants will explore intercultural and diversity issues while playing this fun and simple card game. SALSA DANCE CLASS November 19 th 17:00-18:00 Get ready to move your feet to some sizzling Salsa beats! All are welcome to join Daniela and Ana, members of our extended RRU family, for this introduction to salsa with a lot of fun and fierce foot action. Bring comfortable shoes and your salsa spirit! DID YOU KNOW? Habitat Café will be offering daily lunch specials with an international flair throughout the week!

FEATURE EVENTS INTERNATIONAL STUDENT SHOWCASE & STUDY ABROAD FAIR November 20 th 11:30-13:30 A highlight of International Education Week, the International Student Showcase and Study Abroad Fair provides the opportunity to travel around the world in our very own Quarterdeck and experience a taste of the multitude of cultures that make up our unique community. Exhibits showcase art, food and activities creating a safe environment to ask questions and explore the unknown. Our annual International Talent Show encourages students to share their unique talents on stage. These cultural performances are always an inspiring display of global artistry. This event, led by our students, is one of the most colourful and best attended events of the year. Don t miss out! Photo contest winners will be announced!

HOME AWAY FROM HOME: HOMESTAY FAMILY POTLUCK November 20 th 17:30-19:30 International Education Week is all about raising awareness about the benefits of international education for individuals and communities. An important aspect of the international education experience is what happens away from the classrooms when students go home. Homestay families are indeed a very important piece of the international education experience. Join us for an evening with Canadian families that is open to everyone! It s a potluck, so bring something to share with others. There will also be games and karaoke! DID YOU KNOW? Canada is the world s 7th most popular destination for international students and British Columbia is the 2nd most popular destination in Canada for international students.

FEATURE EVENTS INTENTIONALLY INTERCULTURAL: NAVIGATING SOCIAL & ACADEMIC ACCULTURATION November 21st 10:30-11:30 Royal Roads University staff and faculty are invited to join Ining Chao, Academic Head of the International Study Centre (ISC), and Paul Turner, ISC faculty member, for an informative and enlightening presentation that will highlight a series of educational workshops developed and delivered at the ISC. International students who join the ISC participate in various learning activities to raise their intercultural awareness and develop strategies to cope with the demands of living and studying internationally. Learn from the insight and recommendations of those who have experienced the ISC s unique approach in supporting international students through their time abroad. DID YOU KNOW? DODGEBALL TOURNAMENT November 21st 12:30-13:30 Location: Recreation Centre Gymnasium If you can dodge the peacocks, you can dodge a ball! Sign up your team now at the Recreation Centre to participate in our first ever Dodge Ball Tournament! Prizes will be awarded to the winning team and secondary prizes will be awarded for the best team outfits! Come release some of your stress by throwing balls at your fellow staff, faculty and students and finding creative techniques for dodging theirs. Did you know?
