With a population of around 292,500, it is large enough to offer all the facilities, entertainment and conveniences of the city, yet small enough to retain the friendly, relaxed atmosphere of a coastal community. Whilst Wollongong maintains a safe and friendly community spirit, it is a young city, diverse and changing fast, and the University of Wollongong is playing a big part in this transformation. HOMESTAY FAMILIES MEET SOME OF OUR FAMILIES Our Homestay families are all amazing people, who genuinely care about the students that they host. They open not just their homes but also their hearts, offering a safe, caring, family expereince, where students are free to focus on study and personal growth. Our families are rigourously tested before being accepted onto our program. They must be successful in interviews, home inspections, police, character and Working With Children Checks, as well as our training program. VIRGINIA & LUKE (ABOVE) Homestay Family since February 2015 The UOW College Homestay program has brought so much fun into our lives as we welcome different students into our home for both short and long term stays. We have made some wonderful new friends and had the opportunity to experience different cultures. We still keep in touch with most of the students that have stayed with us through social media and have also caught up with one while overseas on holidays in Hong Kong. And Padh (above), our long term high school student, is definitely part of our family now. I have and will continue to recommend the program to other families, as a very positive program for everyone. 6 UOW COLLEGE HOMESTAY

ELVIS & RENEE (BELOW) Homestay Family since January 2015 We are blessed to be a UOW College Homestay family. It is a very enriching experience and we are honoured to care for our students. Welcoming them into our home has not only expanded our family but also our way of thinking. We are thrilled to establish relationships with students and so proud of their individual accomplishments during their stay. Prior to them leaving, we love looking back on their time with us and seeing how much they have grown and developed. Not just in their proficiency of English but also their maturity, intellect, and cultural adaptation/participation (such as eating different foods). The UOW College Homestay program is rewarding for both the student and Homestay family. It is a fantastic, well organised program where lifelong friends are made. NARELLE, MATT & JARRYD (ABOVE) Homestay Family since July 2016 Being a UOW College Homestay family has brought nothing but happiness into our home. Meeting these young students from different countries and cultures has opened our eyes to the world. My sons have made new friends and we are still in contact with them on Facebook. All our students have been polite and courteous and it is so nice that they are so grateful for what we do for them. It has been the best decision our family has made. MAUREEN & DAVID Homestay Family since January 2016 We feel very honoured that our student s families have placed their trust in us; strangers that they have never met, to care for their children. Dave and I both believe that it is important to learn and more importantly respect, different cultures and ideas. As empty nesters, but being young at heart, we enjoy having young people living with us and we have been excited about receiving and getting to know people from different cultures. Our first student (who is still with us) was Taher, a young Muslim man, who calls us Mum and Dad (which was his idea). We have enjoyed learning about his family and his culture and finding common ground. A highlight was hosting his 18th Birthday dinner which was attended by his friends, who all seemed to enjoy themselves. Our second student (who stayed with us for four months) was Kaidong, 24 years old, who was very keen on learning how to bake anything that contained chocolate! Thus when he left we presented him with a special "baking" package filled with different types of chocolate recipes. We still have contact with Kaidong via email every couple of days and we hope to see him again. He is dearly missed by all of us. Currently we also have staying with us, Kenta, a 19 year old Japanese student. He is teaching us about Japanese rock music; which we enjoy. UOW COLLEGE HOMESTAY 7

" Homestay was not just accommodation - we were given space in our families and became a closely knit family member. PANDIT, SCHOOL OF LIBERAL STUDIES PETROLEUM UNIVERSITY It was our first Homestay experience which turned out to be a worthwhile living experience in all its true sense. The family exposed us to the community spirit, helped us with basic requirements to travel around the town and also took us out on trips to the Blue Mountains, the lovely beaches and local restaurants." UOW College Homestay supports domestic and international students, study tour groups, interns and visiting researchers who need a safe and cost effective place to stay. All students enjoy the benefits of a well managed home, where they can focus on their studies. International students also gain social, cultural and language support from a local family; helping them to quickly become confident and excel in their studies. Domestic students gain a safe and consistent place to live with the advantage of living in a well managed home so they can focus completely on their academic Program. UOW College Homestay enhances a student s English Language proficiency and confidence, by providing a safe place to practice what is learnt in the classroom. Students become one of the family and receive all of the support that they need to be safe, happy and healthy. Combined with an excellent academic and activities program, UOW College Homestay completes the experience and is one of the most cost effective accommodation options available. LI XIAN "My homestay family is absolutely my best reward in Australia. They made me feel I belonged, like I m really one of their family members. My host family have showered me with so much love and care and I truly feel blessed to be a part of this family. They have helped me grow mentally, given me advice and I feel like I'm a different person now. My family back home have noticed the changes and say that I have grown into a mature adult." UOW COLLEGE HOMESTAY 9

HOMESTAY Under 18s UOW College Homestay takes great pride in the care of children aged 8 to 17 years to ensure they are very safe and genuinely cared for. Only a small number of our families are chosen to host children; those who are most patient, kind, flexible and experienced. We take care of your children, just as we would want you to take care of ours. Special services are provided by families hosting children's study tours, such as packed lunches and daily transfers to and from campus. We can arrange Guardianship care (CAAW) for those who need visa assistance. Children in year seven and over can be accommodated with a UOW College Homestay family, where they will become a member of the family and receive all the care of home. 10 UOW COLLEGE HOMESTAY

" When I came to Australia I was very nervous, but my host family has been very kind and helpful. MIYU "My English is not fluent yet, but my host family always listen and speak with me. Homestay is very good for students who want to study English, and I am happy that I can stay with them. I hope to keep in touch with my host family even when I return back to my country." ERIC "Living in Homestay makes me feel warm and a part of this family. We have fondu night, play card games, go travelling and visit grandparents farm. All of these make us become closer like a real family. Even one day when I grow up and need to leave this home, I won't forget this memory. I won't ever forget my Homestay mum and brother, because they have been my part of life, they have been my precious family. UOW COLLEGE HOMESTAY 11
