ACADEMIC QUALIFICATIONS OVERVIEW ACADEMIC QUALIFICATIONS Project, Programme, Portfolio, and Value Chain Management have become a key knowledge area in the management of successful organisations, especially in the new economy world we live today. Cranefield College offers Project, Programme, Portfolio, and Value Chain Management qualifications that satisfy this need. APPLY WHAT YOU LEARN TODAY IN YOUR JOB TOMORROW In the current economic climate, employers prefer job-relevant education and training for improving the abilities of employees and for providing them with the necessary skills to apply what they learn today in their work context tomorrow. All academic programmes and modules are presented in English and due to the structure of all Cranefield s academic programmes, students need to spend only one day per month away from work for classes. Classes can be attended live, or live on-line via the internet. The rest of the time, student syndicate groups meet outside of work hours to discuss their practical case studies. Cranefield s state of the art teaching and learning technologies allow classes, and even syndicate group meetings, to be attended live online via the internet anywhere in South Africa and the world. The learning programme requires the execution of learning content (modules) in a specific order that is in line with the accepted national and international bodies of knowledge of this applied science. The different learning modules therefore are offered in a prescribed order. OUR APPROACH TO TEACHING AND LEARNING To furnish you with a solid theoretical and practical background, the academic programmes provide an introduction to basic and major areas of project and programme management. Included in our teaching are traditional and innovative learning approaches. EMPHASIS IS ON LEARNING INSTEAD OF TEACHING: Students should prepare themselves thoroughly by studying the prescribed text and recommended reading material. Facilitates internalisation of information. Promotes meaningful participation in syndicates. Classes take the form of presentation and discussion, rather than conventional lectures. Both theoretical understanding and practical skills in application are promoted. Emphasis is on hands-on problem solving. ADVANCED DIPLOMA IN PROJECT MANAGEMENT (ADVDIPPM) OVERVIEW The purpose of the Advanced Diploma in Project Management is to provide the opportunity to project management practitioners to deepen their knowledge and understanding of project management theories, methodologies and practices to enable them to pursue a career within the project management work context, and to advance to higher organisational positions. After Completing the Advanced Diploma, students will have the following skills: Evaluate and apply project management principles as supported by the new-economy management functions of leading, creating, implementing and improving in both a content and context organisational environment; and Understand the complexities of programme management and continuous improvement principles, and apply these to enhance organisational performance; and Reflect critically on the role of quality and performance management in the organisational supply chain, in particular the cross-functional programme-managed component thereof, with the aim of improving the performance of the organisational value chain; or [elective] Compare business strategy theory with practice to meet challenges in both internal and external organisational environments, in a prescriptive and emergent manner, so as to enhance the value creation ability of the learning organisation; or [elective] Evaluate the creation of effective and efficient project and process teams, from a behavioural perspective, with the aim of improving the performance of the organisation; or [elective] Analyse strategic financial management theories, including the fundamentals of contract and corporate law, in order to contribute to the effective functioning of the financial sector of the organisation and to demonstrate how the use of an appropriate financial strategy can add value to the overall corporate strategy of an organisation [elective]. *ACADEMIC PROGRAMME FEES DIPLOMA FEE R 55, 150.00 Pay full fee or R 3 400.00 registration fee and R 17, 250.00 per module. *May be claimed back from your organisation s SETA (South Africa) REGISTRATION FEE R 3 400.00 Three modules required to complete the academic programme. LEARNING MODULES OUTLINE NQF level 7, with 120 credits The Advanced Diploma consists of three modules of 40 credits each. Module Order of Precedence *If the Admissions Committee determines that your current academic qualifications and working experience are not sufficient for admission, the applicant will need to complete Module Mα (Project Management: Perspective, Planning and Implementation) at an additional cost before proceeding to module M1. 4

ACCREDITATION AND CERTIFICATION Accreditation The Advanced Diploma in Project Management AdvDip(PM) is accredited by the Council on Higher Education at NQF level 7, with 120 credits (consisting of three modules of 40 credits each). The qualification is registered by the Department of Higher Education and Training. It particularly serves to meet the need for a professional qualification on the graduate level in project, programme and portfolio management. Certification The AdvDip(PM) is fully aligned with the USA Project Management Institute s (PMI) PMBOK (Project Management Body of Knowledge) and is an ideal route towards gaining international certification as a PgMP (Program Management Professional). It is also fully aligned with the International Project Management Association s 4-level certification. These are deemed to be the internationally most important industryrecognised certifications for project, programme and portfolio managers. PROGRAMME AVAILABILITY Modules M1 and M2 M1 and M2 are offered four times per annum at Cranefield s Main Tuition Centre in Midrand, Gauteng, and streamed live online globally. If undertaken live online or at the Main Tuition Centre, the learning programme can be commenced in any quarter of the year: To allow for flexibility throughout the year to commence. To continue the AdvDip(PM), since M1 must be undertaken first and then followed by M2. M1 and M2 run four times per annum in the following timeslots: Jan to March (Initial) April to June (Repeat) July to Sept (Repeat) Oct to Dec (Repeat) M1 and M2 are also offered class-based once per annum in East London (see academic calendars). Elective modules The elective modules (a choice of three between M3, M4, M5 and M6) are each presented twice per annum in Midrand, Gauteng in the following timeslots: M3: Jan to March & July to Sept M4: April to June & Oct to Dec M5: Jan to March & July to Sept M6: April to June & Oct to Dec Note again that all lectures at the Main Tuition Centre are streamed live online via Cranefield s Blackboard Collaborate System, making it possible to attend interactive classes via the Internet. Therefore, you do not need to be based in Gauteng province to undertake a module presented at the Main Tuition Centre in Midrand. 5

LEARNING MODE Cranefield College offers enhanced distance learning. It entails the integration of self-study, live online classes, traditional face-to-face classes, and online high definition (HD) videos of important topics. Cranefield s learning mode is supported by its online Learning Management System (LMS). CLASS ATTENDANCE REQUIREMENTS All modules (class-based or live online): Although Cranefield operates on a distance learning mode, students are advised to attend classes whether online or on-site. It is particularly advised to participate in the first lecture day of each module. Lecture Session Times & Participation: Duration: Five hours on a lecture day Time: 08h00-13h00 Contact Days: 3 days of lectures per module, spread evenly over the three months duration of each module. For actual class dates go to Academic Calendars on the website. Auditorium Facilities: After the formal morning lecture session, the auditorium facilities are at the disposal of attending students who wish to have syndicate group discussions. The lecturer will be available to assist with individual or group matters. 6

ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS A Degree or Diploma coupled with relevant experience. However, applicants who do not yet hold a tertiary qualification may in some cases be considered for entry onto the Advanced Diploma programme on the basis of recognition of prior learning (RPL). For the purpose of RPL assessment, all relevant information and documentation, including a detailed curriculum vitae (particularly describing the applicant s substantial work experience) must be submitted to the Registrar (Academic). This is designed to provide opportunities to those who meet the following criteria: a. Have completed at least the National Senior Certificate (or international equivalent). b. Have been employed or active in the community for at least eight years since leaving secondary school. c. Have gained substantial management experience in the workplace, holding a position of authority and responsibility. d. Have successfully completed the foundational module Mα (Project Management: Perspective, Planning and Implementation) or PM Short Course (Project Management: Perspective, Planning and Implementation) at Cranefield College. e. Have completed other courses related to the required competencies at credible institutions. Applicants must generally comply with at least a) to d) above, but evidence related to e) will also contribute significantly to RPL. Where an applicant has been identified by his or her employer as having leadership potential resulting from Human Resources career-path tracking, it is sufficient for him or her to comply only with a), c) and d) above. In evaluating students for RPL purposes, current competencies in the field of Project Management that have been acquired by experiential learning through related studies and/or experience will be closely assessed. EVERY APPLICATION WILL BE ASSESSED ON ITS OWN MERITS. 7

LIVE ONLINE DISTANCE LEARNING Cranefield College offers enhanced distance learning. Cranefield s teaching and learning mode is supported by its Blackboard Learning Management System. With Cranefield s enhanced distance learning, all classes are streamed live on the Internet, and students may opt to participate in any or all of their classes online, thereby saving time and travel. How does it work? Cranefield uses its Blackboard Learning Management System as a platform for the Live Online Distance Learning program which enhances the entire process for lecturers and students, also enabling students to attend classes interactively online. All classes are streamed live (from Cranefield s Main Tuition Centre in Midrand, Gauteng) and students are able to see and ask questions from the lecturer. Remote students, including those in other countries, are now able to attend live classes via the Internet, or view recordings thereof.
