SIJ2018 Summer in Japan June 25 July 20 @ Kyushu University, Fukuoka PROGRAM DESCRIPTION What is SIJ2018? Summer in Japan 2018 (SIJ2018) is a 4-week, summertime, intensive study abroad program that Kyushu University offers for credit to students from around the world. Designed for undergraduate-level students in all academic fields, SIJ offers participants a comprehensive package of resources, opportunities, and hands-on experiences to become familiar with, or further deepen their understanding of, Japan in today s social, cultural, political and economic contexts. Using English as the primary medium of instruction, SIJ offers participants both traditional in-class academic coursework and off-campus activities for experiential learning. Together, both types of activities facilitate, in an intensive and effective manner, participants understanding of contemporary Japanese society and culture. SIJ is based on Kyushu University s rich and successful 16-year legacy of offering the intensive summer program known as Asia in Today s World (ATW). From 2001 through 2016, the University enjoyed offering ATW as its flagship summer program. ATW concluded in 2016 upon the University s strategic decision to develop an alternative, successor program SIJ that is designed to be accessible to a wider range of international students in terms of their levels of prior knowledge and familiarity with Japan s contemporary society and culture. SIJ is also designed to tap into local resources more closely, in order to provide participants with more intensive experiential learning opportunities. This Program Description will first inform you of the basic profile of Kyushu University, the host university of SIJ, and Fukuoka City, the home-base of Kyushu University. It will then describe the contents and details of SIJ2018, and provide information about how to apply for this study abroad program. Page 1 of 7

KYUSHU UNIVERSITY Kyushu University is among the top-ranked, highly renowned, national universities in Japan. Originally founded in 1911 as one of the country s seven imperial universities, the University has continuously thrived for over a century as one of the leading institutions of higher education and research not only in Japan but also across Asia. Today, Kyushu University consists of 11 undergraduate schools, 18 graduate schools, 5 research institutes and a hospital for comprehensive care. With Ito Campus as its new main campus, the University offers high quality education and engages in cutting-edge research at five campuses located from the east to west outskirts of Fukuoka City. The total enrollment was approximately 19,000 students, including nearly 2,000 international students from more than 80 countries around the world. For more information about Kyushu University, please access: https://www.kyushu-u.ac.jp/en/ FUKUOKA CITY The home of Kyushu University is Fukuoka City, one of Japan s hubs of economy, culture and education, located in the country s southwest. Fukuoka is a pleasant coastal city of about 1.5 million residents of diverse backgrounds and is the largest metropolis of Kyushu Island, one of the four major islands of Japan. Rich in history, culture and business, it is also an internationally recognized popular city: Monocle Magazine, a UK lifestyle magazine, ranked Fukuoka as one of the world s top- 10 best cities in its 2014 Quality of Life World Survey. Also, thanks to its favorable location close to other major countries in Asia, including China, Korea and Taiwan, from ancient times Fukuoka City has prospered as a gateway to continental Asia. PROGRAM CONTENTS What is in SIJ for you? SIJ offers participants five categories of resources for their academic and experiential learning of contemporary Japanese society and culture. Each resource category also contributes to supplementing the effectiveness of the other categories as illustrated in the diagram below: 2. Language Course 3. Field Studies 4. Homestay Experience 1. Academic Course Introduction to Japan 5. Student Supporters 1. Academic Course Introduction to Contemporary Japan (ICJ) SIJ offers a standard academic course titled Introduction to Contemporary Japan (ICJ). As a quality, theme-based course taught in a traditional classroom setting, the ICJ course challenges participants to acquire, or further develop, their knowledge of key issues and perspectives on contemporary society, culture, politics, and economy of Japan (and other countries in Asia relevant to the themes). The ICJ course is co-taught, in a relay manner, mainly by a group of faculty members at Kyushu University s International Student Center, who are experts of international education for exchange students from all around the world. SIJ requires that all participants enroll in the ICJ course. Over the course of the program the ICJ course runs 15 sessions, including lecture-centered sessions, field studies and sessions for participants in-class presentations of their learning outcomes. Participants may earn 2 credits upon successful completion of the ICJ course. 2. Language Course Japanese Language (JL) Another in-class learning activity that SIJ offers is a language-instruction course titled simply Japanese Language (JL). The main objective of the JL course is to help participants develop their Japanese language skills as a pivotal cultural skillset that is essential to effectively enhancing their immersion experience into Japanese society and culture through their daily social interactions and communication. SIJ offers four levels of the JL course: Beginner, Elementary 1, Elementary 2 and Intermediate. Participants are required to take a placement test to determine the level of JL course in which they should enroll, based on the level of their Japanese proficiency at the time of participating in SIJ. SIJ requires that all participants enroll in the JL course. Page 3 of 7

Over the course of the program the JL course runs 15 sessions. Participants may earn 1 credit upon successful completion of the JL course. 3. Field Studies Off-Campus Experiential Learning SIJ conducts various field studies in and around Fukuoka City. These activities aim to provide participants with valuable opportunities to substantiate and deepen the knowledge they have gained from the ICJ course through direct observation and experience with diverse aspects of Japanese culture and society beyond the classroom and off campus. SIJ also provides a pre-field study lecture prior to each activity, which helps to prepare participants for effective and dynamic experiential learning onsite. 4. Homestay Experience SIJ arranges homestay opportunities for all participants: one host family for each participant. Daily interactions with host families in community settings help facilitate participants immersion experience into Japanese social life and daily-life communication, which further enhances their learning outcomes of the ICJ course. These homestay experiences also aim to help substantiate and deepen knowledge that participants gain mainly from their respective JL courses. Homestay for 2 weeks. Host families are recruited in Fukuoka City and Itoshima City, a town neighboring Fukuoka. 5. Student Tutors One-on-One Interaction and Friendship SIJ also assigns student tutors to all participants: one tutor for each participant. Those tutors are fulltime local students at Kyushu University, mostly at the undergraduate level, who are enthusiastic about helping and are seeking opportunities to interact with international students on campus. Tutors aim to assist participants in smooth adjustment into campus and social lives, as well as helping you develop your circle of friends. The one-on-one partnership with a student tutor provides participants with opportunities to practice and hone their Japanese language skills and to broaden their knowledge of Japanese society and culture today from cross-cultural perspectives.
