2017-2018 District Speech Contest Instructions for Teachers and Students Thank you for participating in the 2017-2018 Rotary District 5190 Speech Contest. Important Points to Know 1. In most areas, the speech contest has three levels. First is the local club contest, held between February and March, 2018. The second is an area contest, held between March and April, 2018. The final level is the District Speech Contest, to be held at the District Conference on May 19, 2018, 9:30am at Atlantis Casino Resort Spa, Reno, NV. STUDENTS MUST BE AVAILABLE FOR ALL THREE LEVELS TO ENTER IN THE COMPETITION. 2. Only the winner at each level advances to the next level. Club and are contest have 2-5 contestants; the District contest has 7-13. The cash prizes at the district level are $1,000 (1 st ), $750 (2 nd ) and $500 (3 rd ). Club and area prizes are the responsibility of the participating clubs. 3. Contest rules are available at your local school or Rotary club. 4. Your local Rotary club is responsible for furnishing you with all of the information needed to compete at each level of the contest. 5. A student may enter only one club contest in their own area. Time: 2017-2018 District Speech Contest Speech Contest Rules 5 7 Minutes Entrants: Must be from District 5190 clubs and in grades 9 12 Club Prizes: Area Prizes: District Prizes: To be determined by club To be determined by participating clubs $1,000 for 1 st Place, $750 for 2 nd Place and $500 for 3 rd Place CONTEST RULES Notes: Microphone: Props: Judges: Arrival Time: Contestants may use written notes at the club contest ONLY A microphone must be used at the District contest No displays, props or prompting is allowed Use 4 judges and 1 tiebreaker at all contests. They may be Rotarians All contestants MUST arrive at contest location NO LATER thsn 10 minutes before the start of the contest. Late arrivals will be DISQUALIFIED. NO EXCEPTIONS. Club Contest: Area Contest: SUGGESTED COMPETITION TIMELINES February March, 2018 Deadline TBD Before April 15, 2018 Deadline TBD All Area Speech contestant finalist names and contact information is due to Jeanne Schmidt Herron no later than April 15, 2018 (FIRM). District Speech contest is on May 19, 2018, 9:30am at Atlantis Casino Resort Spa, Reno, NV Contestants must be available to speak at both the Area and District contests in order to enter the club contest. A student may only speak at one club in their area.

Win $1,000 Compete in the Rotary International Speech Contest Freshmen through Seniors are Eligible for Cash Prizes! The Clubs of Rotary District 5190 are holding speech contests at the club, area, and district levels in the spring of 2018. The winner of each area will compete against other area winners at the Rotary District Conference on May 19, 2018 at the Atlantis Casino Resort Spa in Reno, NV. Prizes of $1,000 (1 st ), $750 (2 nd ) and $500 (3 rd ) will be awarded at the District competition. The Club contest will be held on, TBD so you have plenty of time to prepare your speech.
