ABSTRACT SUMMARY The Information Literacy Pilot Project at Alabama A&M was planned and implemented to fulfill the following: the commitment to the HBCU Library Alliance Institute II and the Mellon Foundation, to assist students in recognizing when information is needed and have the ability to locate evaluate and use effectively the needed information

NORTH CAROLINA STATE UNIVERSITY VISITS ALABAMA A&M UNIVERSITY The Meeting consisted of an interchange of ideas and an update on information literacy procedures, goals, objectives, technology usage at each of the libraries. Follow up and continuation of the collaborative activities was also discussed. Luncheon, Tour of Alabama A&M Learning Resources Center and State Black Archives Research Center and Museum

SIGNIFICANT CHALLENGES The number of students participating in the sample Pilot Project created a challenge and additional equipment (more smart boards) would have provided more student access to technology.

BREAKTHROUGHS/ INNOVATIONS Students were introduced to information literacy and technology and engaged in interactive learning at a more advanced level. Students were challenged to enhance critical thinking skills through brainstorming.

APPLICATION OF LEARNING The ACRL Standards for Information Literacy will be applied for learning. The Information literate student: Standard 1- Determines the nature and extent of the information needed Standard 2- Accesses needed information, effectively and efficiently

APPLICATION OF LEARNING Standard 3- Evaluates information and its sources critically and incorporates selected information into his or her knowledge base and value system Standard 4- Uses information to accomplish a purpose Standard 5- Accesses and uses information ethically and legally

GOALS NOT ACHIEVED Continuous work should be implemented on the LRC holdings (Books, E-Books, Audio Visual etc.).

PROJECT REVIEW The Information Literacy Pilot Project was chosen to create an Information Literate environment for students enrolled in English 102 and Honors English at Alabama A&M. students will participate in activities to strengthen and develop literacy skills, to develop techniques for reading comprehension, evaluation and critical thinking skills

PILOT ACTIVITY The following activity was presented to our pilot class during the first session to reinforce critical thinking skills. This worksheet was developed by a group of librarians at the University of Wisconsin- Milwaukee library to promote the teaching of Information Literacy. http://www.uwm.edu/li brary/ris/instruction/ip/

INFORMATION LITERACY AND THE STRATEGIC PLAN The LRC will continue to refine the information and library instruction programs to ensure students are prepared, to recognize when information is needed and to have the ability to locate,evaluate and use information ethically. Varied and innovative teaching programs will prepare students to use information in their academic endeavors and in their roles

STRATEGIC PLAN CONTINUED as citizens, consumers, and professionals and as well as in their recreational activities. Goal 2, A&M strives to achieve academic excellence, Strategy 3, Make Information Literacy an integral part of the A&M experience by developing a piloted Orientation 101 with University College, develop and maintain online assessments, tutorials and course evaluations.

PROJECT SUMMARY The Pilot Information Literacy Project provided an introduction to Information Literacy for a small sample of students. More students will be involved in the Information Literacy Project in the Fall of 2006 when all of the English 102 classes will be participants.
