From 2020 the route to qualification as a solicitor will be changing. Current: (1) Qualifying Law Degree or Graduate Diploma (2) Legal Practice Course (3)Training Contract (2 years) New: (1) A degree or equivalent experience (2) Single Qualifying Examination Stage 1 (may be part of degree) (3) Workplace Training (likely to be 18 months to 2 years) (4) Single Qualifying Examination Stage 2
The route to qualification as a barrister may be changing. Current: (1) Qualifying Law Degree or Graduate Diploma (2) Bar Professional Training Course (1 year) (3) Pupillage (1 year) New: The Bar Standards Board has not made up its mind. A popular suggestion involves splitting the BPTC into 2 6- month stages, one of which will be online and one face to face.
