As one of the borough s leaders in apprenticeship delivery, the College is proud to be working alongside some of the most significant employers in Greater Manchester and beyond, pledging our continual support to create new apprenticeship opportunities in the borough. The College s dedicated recruitment service, Trafford First, has become a one-stop-shop for job related advice and guidance. Our expert recruitment team work in partnership with local employers to match young people to potential apprenticeships. The College regularly receives feedback from employers about how apprenticeships have increased levels of motivation and productivity, and given businesses a proven return on investment. Our young apprentices are also a shining example of how talented and motivated individuals can be. Bringing local businesses and employers together since the launch of our Trafford First Hub in 2013. 4 TRAFFORD COLLEGE APPRENTICESHIP GUIDE 5

BENEFITS OF AN APPRENTICESHIP Over 500,000 people started an apprenticeship in 2015/16 1 in 5 companies have a former apprentice at board level An apprenticeship is a great way to earn money whilst you learn. As an apprentice, you will work towards a nationally recognised qualification, whilst gaining valuable work experience in your particular subject. 1.4 Billion Average Wage invested in apprenticeships in the UK over 160 per week For the majority of your apprenticeship, you will be based in the workplace (course area relevant) for 4 days per week with 1 day a week spent in College. However, some apprenticeships will require you to be assessed entirely in the workplace. At Trafford College we will support you at every step of your apprenticeship. Our Trafford First Recruitment Team will even help you find your ideal apprenticeship placement (for details on Trafford First, see page 19). APPRENTICESHIP BREAKDOWN We offer apprenticeships at the following levels: > > Intermediate Apprenticeship (Level 2) > > Advanced Apprenticeship (Level 3) > > Higher Level Apprenticeship (Levels 4 & 5) Quality work experience On average 1/3 of apprentices receive a promotion within 12 months of finishing their course Gain industry contacts 6 TRAFFORD COLLEGE APPRENTICESHIP GUIDE 7

Apprenticeships are for people aged 16 or over, who are living in the UK and would like to gain hands-on experience in a particular field of study, whilst studying towards a national industry recognised qualification. If you are 16-18 years old, apprenticeship programmes are fully funded by the government. Neither you nor your employer will have to pay for the training. We also offer apprenticeship programmes for learners aged 19+, however certain courses may incur fees. Apprenticeships for learners aged 24+ may be co-funded, meaning that employers will be required to contribute to the cost. Please contact Trafford First for full details (see page 19). Freya MADE IT HAPPEN WITH AN APPRENTICESHIP Coming to College is very different to school. You get treated like an adult and your tutors place a lot of trust in you and your abilities. I d definitely recommend studying at Trafford College and especially on an apprenticeship. This is definitely the course for me. NOW: KELLOGG S ENGINEERING APPRENTICE WHAT NEXT? The College has various apprentices working at Manchester United Veronica Macahilas Apprentice Chef at Manchester United Without Trafford College I wouldn t be where I am today. My tutor Lola has been like a mum to me and looks out for all the apprentices, always making sure we are happy and are being looked after. I have never had this kind of support at any other college. Ellie White Apprentice Chef at Manchester United I always dreamed of working in Hospitality. When I finished school at 16 I looked for an apprenticeship because I d been advised whilst on work placement with the Hilton Hotel that apprenticeships were the best route to take, especially in this industry. I m so pleased that I took their advice because I m so amazed by the opportunities I ve been given. Robert Bailey Apprentice Chef at Manchester United I previously studied at Salford City College before starting my apprenticeship. I found that the academic learning style just wasn t for me and I wanted more variety. I ve definitely got that through studying with Trafford College. Aaron Mcall Apprentice Chef at Manchester United Studying with Trafford College has been really great; they ve been like a family in all honesty and everyone has been really helpful. I ve always really enjoyed cooking so this felt like the obvious option and I m so glad I decided on this route. 10 TRAFFORD COLLEGE APPRENTICESHIP GUIDE 11

YOU HAVE A REAL JOB Most apprenticeships are full-time like a regular job. The number of hours worked must be at least 30 per week, just 7.5 hours less than the 37.5 worked on regular contracts. Apprenticeships must also last for a minimum of 12 months, and normally last between one and four years. IT S A SECURE OPTION You ll need to check your individual contract but you should have the same rights as other employees, with a contract of employment and real opportunities for future progression. YOU CAN AFFORD IT Unlike most ways of gaining formal training and practical experience, apprenticeships are paid for by the government or your employer, so they re great if university isn t an option financially. YOU LL GET A WAGE The national minimum wage for apprentices starts at 3.40 although a lot of employers pay higher than this. The average weekly wage is between 120-200. YOU LL GET A QUALIFICATION All apprenticeships must include an element of training. They should be designed to give you on and off-the-job training, which will lead to a qualification. 12 TRAFFORD COLLEGE APPRENTICESHIP GUIDE 13
