Syllabus Spanish 1411 Brazosport College Lake Jackson, TX Catalogue Description: SPAN 1411 This course is dedicated to the fundamentals of grammar and focuses on four skills in Spanish: comprehension, speaking, reading and writing. It emphasizes active communication aimed at the development of oral and comprehension skills and exposure to the diverse cultures of the Spanish-speaking world. This course is for students who have not previously studied Spanish. Textbook: McMinn, John and Alonso Garcia, Nuria. Hoy día: Spanish for Real Life, Volumes 1 and 2, Books a la Carte plus multi-semester My Spanish Lab access, 1st ed., New Jersey: Prentice Hall, 2011. Required course materials are available at the Brazosport College bookstore, on campus or online at http://www.brazosport.edu/bookstore. A student of this institution is not under any obligation to purchase a textbook from the college bookstore. The same textbook is/may also be available from an independent retailer, including an online retailer. LEARNING OUTCOMES FOR SPANISH 1411 BEGINNING SPANISH I 1. Students will engage in conversations using level-appropriate grammatical structures including narrating events that take place in the present and producing questions and responses on a variety of topics dealing with everyday life. Assessment: Students will have 2-4 exams that measure speaking ability. Students will reach novice mid to novice high proficiency. Passing rate is 70%. 2. Students will demonstrate understanding of level-appropriate spoken Spanish. Assessment: Students will be required to listen to their instructor and recorded media and answer questions on all exams. Students will increase their ability to understand to a level of novice mid to novice high proficiency. Passing rate is 70%. 3. Students will write simple sentences and organize them into short paragraphs. Assessment: Students will have to answer questions using complete sentences and write well-organized paragraphs on all exams. Students will increase their writing ability to a novice mid to novice high proficiency. Passing rate is 70%.

4. Students will read and comprehend level-appropriate texts. Assessment: Students will have to read appropriate texts and answer questions on all exams. Students will increase their reading ability to a novice mid to novice high proficiency. Passing rate is 70%. 5. Students will identify and discuss traditions, customs and values of the Hispanic world. Assessment: Students will participate in classroom activities, present research and be able to discuss their opinions. Homework assignments will be assessed, and exams will measure students understanding. Passing rate is 70%. 6. Students will compare and contrast the traditions, customs, and values of the Hispanic world with characteristics of their own culture. After completing the first-year course sequence (1411-11412), students will be able to use the target language to communicate minimally with learned material and formulaic utterances, ask and answer basic questions, initiate and respond to simple statements, and maintain limited face-to-face conversations about familiar topic. Additionally, students should be able to meet limited practical writing needs by creating statements or questions (initially) through writing simple paragraph-level narratives that utilize grammatical structures and vocabulary associated with the course. Specific Objectives for 1411: Students will be able to accomplish the following communicative functions: provide background information about yourself and others describe themselves and others narrate activities and daily routines discuss future plans

describe likes, dislikes and talents locate places, objects and buildings compare people, places and things discuss the weather Evaluation 4 chapter exams 70% Exam 1, Chapter 1, Oct. 3 Exam 2, Chapter 2, Oct. 26 Exam 3, Chapter 3, Nov. 21 Exam 4, Chapter 4, Dec. 14 In-class assignments & participation 15% Homework, in-class assignments 15% Exams will test all the student s skills speaking, listening, reading and writing. Only one chapter exam may be made up during the semester, and it must be made up within one week of the original exam. This does not include the final exam. No late homework will be accepted. Students evaluate the class at mid-semester through a standard form given to them by a proctor. Students are encouraged to be candid in their assessment of the class, texts and instructor. These evaluation forms are not examined until after final grades have been submitted. Attendance: I will not withdraw you for lack of attendance. It is your responsibility to complete the drop form before the appropriate date. Keep in mind that attendance is very important for successful completion of this course.
