WELCOME TO BASIC COMPUTER AIDED DRAFTING ONLINE COURSE Professor Cheryl Shrock Hello. I am Professor Cheryl Shrock, your instructor for the Basic Computer Aided Drafting course. I have been teaching CAD at Orange Coast College, Costa Mesa, California since 1990. I am also an Autodesk registered author. Previous to teaching I owned and operated a commercial product and machine design business where designs were created and documented using CAD. I have also been involved in Architectural, Electro-Mechanical, Interior design and Landscape design. This course and the workbook are a combination of my teaching skills and my industry experience. Course Content This is a beginning AutoCAD course designed to accommodate all disciplines, such as Architectural, Mechanical, Electronic and Interior Design. Learning the commands and how to use them is the main focus. The process is like building blocks. Each lesson will build on the previous lesson. So please complete the lessons in order and do not skip around. Course pace and due dates There are 30 Lessons. To complete the course in 16 weeks, you should complete approximately 2 lessons each week. Budget approximately 4 hours per lesson. Each exercise is worth 100 points. Each exercise has a due date. I subtract 10 points for each week the exercise is late. Software Required You must have access to one of the following: AutoCAD 2009 or 2010. (LT or Architecture versions will work fine also.) You must have this software installed and ready to use immediately to complete lessons 1 and 2 before due date. Do not delay! If you have ordered the software but you have not received it yet, you should install the 30 day Trial Software that comes with the exercise workbook listed on the next page. This will give you 30 days to receive your purchased software and register it. NOTE: Do not rely on the 30 day trial software that comes with the workbook. It only lasts 30 days. If the software stops working and you can t complete the lessons you will be dropped from the course. 3

2 suggestions for purchasing AutoCAD Software (If you do not already have software) 1. Student discounted software can be purchased from http://www.journeyed.com/. OR 2. Purchase commercial software from Amazon.com. AutoCAD version or LT version or Architecture will work fine. Do not purchase Revit Workbook Required (purchase the book that matches your software) If you have AutoCAD 2009 software: Beginning AutoCAD 2009 exercise workbook w/30 day free trial software by Cheryl R. Shrock ISBN 978-08311-3359-7 This workbook may be purchased from Amazon.com (delivery is usually very fast) OCC bookstore may not have it. If you have AutoCAD 2010 software: Exercise Workbook for Beginning AutoCAD 2010 w/30 day free trial software by Cheryl R. Shrock ISBN 978-08311-3404-4 This workbook may be purchased from the OCC bookstore or Amazon.com or BN.com or Barnes and Noble bookstore Note: 30 day free trial means the software only works for 30 days. So do not rely on this trial software to complete the course. Do not email me in 30 days and tell me you do not know what to do because your 30 day free trial software stopped working and you do not have software. If you do not have the software you will be dropped from the course. 4

Grading Exercises = 100pts each Quizzes = 10pts each Midterm = 100pts No Final Exercises: Notice that heavy emphasis is put on the exercises. I feel that they are the most important to help you learn. After grading an exercise assignment, you have one opportunity to correct any errors and receive a higher grade. Corrections must be completed within a 7 days from the return date. Exercises must be submitted by the due date. 10 points will be subtracted for each week the exercise is late. Quizzes: are to make sure that you are reading all of the lectures and instructions. So read everything. There are only 11 quizzes for 30 lessons, so not every lesson has a quiz. The following list is when to take the quizzes. After completing Lesson 1, take Quiz 1 After completing Lesson 3, take Quiz 2 After completing Lesson 5, take Quiz 3 After completing Lesson 7, take Quiz 4 After completing Lesson 9, take Quiz 5 After completing Lesson 11, take Quiz 6 After completing Lesson 13, take Quiz 7 After completing Lesson 17, take Quiz 8 After completing Lesson 19, take Quiz 9 After completing Lesson 24, take Quiz 10 After completing Lesson 25, take Quiz 11 Midterm: has been created to measure if you are retaining what you are learning. Take the Midterm after completing Lessons 1 through 15. Do not take it before completing Lessons 1 through 15. Final: There will be no Final Exam. Grade / Point equivalent: A = 13059+ B = 13058 11608 C = 11607 10157 D = 10156 8706 F = 8705-0 5

CONFIGURING AUTOCAD I would like you to make a few simple changes to your AutoCAD software configuration. This will ensure that commands and exercises work as expected. You will need the workbook to complete the following and it will take approximately 20 minutes. Step 1. Configuring your AutoCAD software. Turn to page Intro-2 in the workbook and follow the instructions. Step 2. Configuring a Plotter / Printer Plotting is not required for this class, but we will be discussing how to plot. You will configure your own 8-1/2 X 11 printer within AutoCAD Follow the instructions in Appendix A in the back of the workbook. Note: This will not affect any other programs on your computer. So don t worry. Files for the course You will need a few files for this course. 1. Go to: www.shrockpublishing.com 2. Select Downloadable Files Make sure you download the correct files for your software. 3. Save these files to your desktop or to a disk. 4. You will be instructed to open these files in lessons 2 and 9. It is not necessary to open them until instructed. 6
