GCSE Our Role Your Role Attendance needs to be 100% GCSE Pod

Introduction New GCSEs in English language, English Literature and Maths have been taught in schools in England from September 2015, with the first results to be issued in August 2017. Over the last year further subjects have seen new GCSEs introduced and in September 2017 all subjects will be using the new GCSE specifications. What do the new GCSEs look like? The main features of the new GCSEs are: A new grading scale of 9 to 1 is now being used, with 9 being the top grade. Assessment is now mainly by exam, with other types of assessment used only where they are needed to test essential skills. There is new, more demanding content, which has been developed by the government and the exam boards. Courses have be designed for two years of study - they are no longer divided into different modules and students will take all their exams in one period at the end of their course.

GCSE Science Ms Morris Deputy Principal

Science Why Study Science? The study of Science is essential in helping us to understand the world around us. This understanding, or Scientific Literacy, also plays an important part in ensuring students will be able to engage in debates and decisions about a number of important issues in society. Science has something to offer every student, whatever their aspirations. From trainee chef to nuclear physicist, construction apprentice to cancer researcher, everyone needs some level of relevant science understanding. Avanti House will be offering Triple Science and Combined Science at Key Stage 4.

Triple Science Assessment Assessment for the Triple Science courses: This is a linear course. Six written exams will be taken. Two for Biology, two for Chemistry and two for Physics; the exams will be taken in the Summer session of Year 11. Written exam: 1 hour 45 minutes Foundation and Higher Tier 100 marks Questions are multiple choice, structured, closed short answer and open response. Each paper is 50% of the GCSE for that Science subject. *Due to the slight increase in challenge it is advisable that those choosing this option will have secured a Secured (S) or Mastery level at Key Stage 3

Combined Science Studying the Combined Science option means students will finish year 11 with two science grades. Students will have to study all three sciences but the disciplines will not be covered in the same depth as triple science. It is important to note that it is not compulsory for students to have studied triple science in order to gain access to A Level Science subjects.

Combined Science Assessment This is a linear course. There are six papers: two biology, two chemistry and two physics. Each of the papers will assess knowledge and understanding from distinct topic areas. The exams are based on the following format: Written exam: 1 hour 15 minutes Foundation and Higher Tier 70 marks 16.7% of GCSE
