Bible Quiz Official Rules & Regulations For Quiz Competition at Emmanuel Baptist Church Grades 3-6 Saturday, February 28, 2015 Note: These are the same rules and regulations used in 2014
QUIZ OBJECTIVES To encourage clubbers in Bible memorization and handbook review To give clubbers a greater understanding of Scripture To assist clubbers to be ready always to give and answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear (I Peter 3:15) To reach unsaved parents and friends with the gospel To challenge other Christians to memorize Scripture To provide a competitive atmosphere for clubbers to display Bible knowledge BOOK GROUPS TEAMS Red Book (Ultimate Adventure Book 1) o Any clubber in 3th-6 th grade in the Red Book Blue Book (Ultimate Adventure Book 2) o Any clubber in 4 th -6 th grade in the Blue Book Green Book (Ultimate Challenge Book 1) o Any clubber in 5 th -6 th grade in the Green Book Yellow Book (Ultimate Challenge Book 2) o Any clubber in the 6 th grade in the Yellow Book A team has a maximum of two quizzers plus one alternate all in the same book: Red, Blue, Green, or Yellow. It is possible for only one person to compete on a team. Teams may be Coed, or may be all girls, or may be all boys. Boys and girls will compete together. It is possible to enter more than one team per book group, if space is available. Quizzers must compete from the handbook used in the current club year. No quizzer may compete in two different handbooks during the same Quiz Meet. No quizzer may compete in the same book two years. All quizzers must be members of the club for which they are quizzing. Quizzers must be in 3 rd through 6 th grades. Quizzers should arrive at least 45 minutes before start of Quiz Meet Quizzers should be supervised at all times.
ALTERNATES Will take the Written Quiz. May be substituted in between Quiz segments at the halfway point of the Multiple Choice Quiz (after five questions), at the halfway point of Speed Quizzing (after seven questions), or if someone is eliminated in Speed Quiz. The Scorekeeper must be notified of a substitution. COACHES On Quiz day, women should coach all-girls teams. Men should coach all-boys teams. Coed teams may be coached by either. Upon arrival at the Quiz site, the coach signs in the team and picks up the ID signs. Must attend the Coach s meeting held before Quiz begins. After Quiz begins, the coach may counsel quizzers between segments or during substitutions. DRESS STANDARDS To be Christ honoring, Awana emphasizes the importance of modesty, neatness, and cleanliness. Please, no sweats. Quizzers: Awana uniform o (Gray uniform must also have neckerchief and slide) Coaches and Staff: Wear a collared Awana uniform, if you have one; or shirt and tie for men o (Gray uniform for men must include tie) o Please, no jeans for coaches and staff We also encourage: o Girls and ladies to wear below knee-length skirt or dress o Boys and men to wear nice slacks DAY OF QUIZ REVIEW Reviewing from handbooks, Bibles, or other material is not allowed once the Meet begins. No recording of questions is allowed in any form.
QUIZ FORMATS Multiple Choice o One or two clubbers from each team may participate. o Ten questions will be asked of each book group. o Questions and possible answers will be read twice. o There will be three answers from which to choose (A, B, or C). o Quizzers use A-B-C paddles to indicate their answer. o Quizzers must look down at their paddles during each question/answer reading and answer selection time. o Any quizzer looking around will be disqualified from that question. o When finished reading the Quizmaster will say, Select your answers. o Quizzers will have five seconds to determine their choice of answers. o At the call Paddles up all quizzers will raise their paddles simultaneously. o Quizzers raising their paddles late may be disqualified from that question. o Quizzers may not change their paddles after the Paddles up call. o At the Paddles down call, quizzers will place their paddles in their paddle holder. o Scoring: Each correct answer = 10 points, perfect score total = 100 points Written Quiz o Each clubber completes a 10-question test (fill-in-the-blank, matching, etc.) o The Quizmaster will first read each question as clubbers follow along. o Clubbers will have 15 seconds to write their answer to each question. o If a question needs explanation, Coaches or quizzers may ask for clarification as soon as the Quizmaster finishes reading it. o Five extra minutes will be given at the end of the Written Test for clubbers to finish or review their answers. No clarification of questions is allowed during this time. o Cheating observed by Quiz staff will result in a test score of zero. o Tests will be given to Coaches or Scorekeepers for grading. o No test may be returned to clubber after it has been given to his/her Coach. o Coaches will sit with their team. o No spectators are allowed. o Scoring: Each correct answer = 10 points, perfect score total = 100 points o Answers must be totally correct. o Leniency is given in spelling o Only the top two scores are added to the team total.
SPEED QUIZ o One or two clubbers will compete for their team. o Clubbers compete against others in their book group using Jeopardy type buttons. o 15 questions per book group will be given. o Quizmaster will repeat the question if no one attempts to answer after the first reading. o The first quizzer activating his/her light must give an answer. o A quizzer has 10 seconds to begin their answer after he/she is recognized and is in position to answer. o 30 additional seconds are given to complete the answer. o After a quizzer is recognized, no additional help can be given. o Judges will take into consideration the length of the answer and the clubber s fluency. Judges will not cut a quizzer off in the middle of an answer unless he/she is having trouble with it. o After an answer is given the Quizmaster will say, Is that you answer? This is to get a commitment from the quizzer that his/her answer is the one he/she wants the Judges to rule on. Quizzers may change their answer if they wish to do so, and if time remains. The last answer given is the one ruled correct or incorrect. o If the first answer is incorrect, the team buzzing in second must answer the question for half points. The Quizmaster will reread the question. The quizzer has five seconds to begin answering. o If a quizzer responds before a question is completed, the Quizmaster will stop. The quizzer must then give a correct specific answer. o Giving two wrong answers (called a Two Question Quiz Out ) disqualifies a clubber from answering any further Speed Quiz questions. An alternate may take their place. o Answering three questions correctly (called a Three Question Quiz Out ) eliminates clubber from further Speed quizzing. Clubbers will receive bonus points and they must leave the platform. An alternate may take their place. o Scoring: Each first buzz-in correct answer = 20 points Each second buzz-in correct answer = 10 points Each first buzz-in incorrect answer = -10 points Each second buzz-in incorrect answer = -5 points Three answered correctly = 20 bonus points
QUESTIONS Questions will be taken from Discoveries 1-6 in the Red and Blue (Ultimate Adventure 1 and 2) Books, and Challenges 1-6 in Green and Yellow (Ultimate Challenge 1 and 2) Books. Start Zone questions will only be included with the Red Book. Questions may be from Scripture readings, handbook illustrations and information, stories, poems, definitions, review sections, etc. There will not be any questions from Silver or Gold sections or jokes and silly stuff. SAMPLE QUESTIONS Verse quotations: Recite Romans 6:23 Verse completion: Give the reference and complete this verse: For all have sinned Books of the Bible: Which book of the Bible comes after Joel? Key word/phase: Give the reference and quote the verse that contains this phrase: we should live soberly, righteously, and godly Multiple Choice: Hebrews 12:6-7 says: o A-God disciplines us because He loves us o B-God disciplines us because we deserve it o C-God disciplines us to teach us a lesson Definitions: What word in Ephesians 2:9 means good things I do? Reference location: Give the reference to this verse: For God so loved Verse questions: How is the heart described in Jeremiah 17:9? ANSWERS Reading questions: From your reading in Mark 14, who went to the chief priests to betray Jesus? Reciting from or Using words from means the answer must be a quotation from the verse. Thinking about means the answer can be in the quizzer s own words, but must be close to what the handbook states. According to means the answer must be according to the verse or handbook item mentioned in the question. It does not have to be word perfect. For example, Question: According to Acts 16:31, what happens to those who believe? Answer: They will be saved. Not: The will have eternal life.
Scripture verses must be recited word perfect and must include the complete reference, unless the reference was given in the question. A or B in a reference is not required. Questions asked, other than Scripture quotations, may be answered in the clubber s own words, but must be close to what the handbook states. Answers that contain extraneous information may be considered incorrect, even if the correct answer is included. For example, Question: Reciting from John 3:16, whom does God love? Answer: The world. If the quizzer recites the whole verse it is counted wrong. They did not give a specific answer. APPEALS Only official Coaches may challenge a question or answer. They may do so by calling Question before the next question is asked. The Coach will confer privately with the Quizmaster and Judges Other Coaches may listen but are not permitted to speak, unless requested. All Coaches should return to their seats, letting the Quizmaster and Judges make the final decision. No appeals can be made on appeals. Put in writing and give to the Quiz Director, any decisions you feel are unsatisfactory. SPORTSMANSHIP AND ATTITUDE Instruct clubbers to honor God in all they do. Your testimony and example is vital in teaching proper attitudes. TIME-OUTS Only a Quizmaster may call a time-out. TIE-BREAKING Any teams tied for 1 st place will compete to determine the winner. Tied teams are given a two-minute Speed Round to break the tie. No individual points are given.
AWARDS Uniform patch for all participants Totaled scores from each Quiz segment determine the winner. Plaque: Each top book group. Ribbon medallions: First place team in each book group. Placement ribbons: Teams finishing second through fourth in their book group. Top Quizzer ribbon: To quizzer earning the most points in each book group. Highest Honor Ribbons: To everyone who earns a perfect score in an individual segment of Written or Multiple Choice; or answers three correct in Speed Quizzing. COACHES QUIZ DAY CHECK LIST 1. Arrive on time (see your site s information). 2. Make sure quizzers are dressed appropriately. 3. Turn in roster sheets and PCRL forms, sign in at registration table, pick up ID signs and participation patches. 4. Attend Coaches meeting held before Quiz starts.
