Take on the world. INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS

This master s degree in international business is for managers and leaders who want to learn more about managing in a globalised world. 1 Dean's message 2 Why GIBS 3 Why the MPhil in International Business? 4 Course outline, entrance requirements and fee structure 5 Next steps

DEAN S MESSAGE Professor Nicola Kleyn Dean, Gordon Institute of Business Science Any business operating in the 21st century must have a global mindset. This holds true for managers working in the emerging world, as much as it does for those in more established markets. As African companies and leaders already know, working across borders requires unique skills, deep cultural understanding and sensitivity, as well as the ability to strategize on an international scale, to be agile in the face of unexpected changes and the business savvy to spot opportunities to both add and extract value. Harnessing these skills separates traditional managers from those with an international outlook and relevance. It sets apart those who are capable of understanding and managing people from around the world, and positions them squarely on a global stage. Irrespective of where you are around the world, be it at a leading European HQ, an emerging Brazilian concern or a South African firm looking to expand, the ability to strategize globally while thinking locally is not an easy task. But individuals who can master this world view are and will continue to be vitally important to the evolution of any company with cross-border ambitions. As an Africa-based university we believe strongly in equipping our leaders with the skills and competencies they need to excel on the world stage. We understand the dynamics of operating in the African context and we balance our quality academic offering with access to leading minds and networks that can help you shine in your chosen field. Impact is core to how GIBS programmes like the Master s in International Business are designed, delivered and assessed. Our students graduate fully equipped to take up the reins of leadership in order to successfully propel a business forward in the context of a dynamic and changing world. We pride ourselves on producing globally-relevant leaders who can proactively manage cross-functional teams, who understand diversity, who appreciate the societal impact of business and who engender a sustainable approach. These leaders are agile, inclusive and global in their thinking and attitudes; but their roots are firmly in Africa. We look forward to welcoming you to our campus. Your learning journey accelerates here. 3 1

WHY GIBS Founded in 2000, the University of Pretoria's Gordon Institute of Business Science (GIBS) is an internationally accredited business school, based in Johannesburg, South Africa's economic hub. Our campus is positioned in Illovo, Sandton the richest square mile in Africa and home to an array of South African multinationals such as Discovery, Sasol, Massmart, Standard Bank and regional head offices of firms such as Google and Hewlett Packard. We serve many of these prominent multinational corporations in developing their leaders and our experienced local and international lecturers ensure a full understanding of complex international markets, while equipping students to take advantage of opportunities to enhance their own and their organisation s competitive performance. We have a long record of teaching international business and deliver courses to customers in many African countries every year. This aligns to our mission of focusing on general management in dynamic markets to significantly improve responsible individual and organisational performance, primarily in the South African environment and increasingly in our broader African environment, through the provision of high quality business and management education. In May 2017, the annual UK Financial Times Executive Education rankings, a global benchmark for providers of executive education, once again ranked GIBS as the top South African and African business school. This is the 14th year running that GIBS has been ranked among the top business schools worldwide. In October 2017, the GIBS MBA was ranked among the top 100 business schools globally in the prestigious Financial Times Executive MBA Rankings. GIBS is the only business school in Africa to appear in this ranking. GIBS is accredited by the Association of MBAs (AMBA), the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB), the Council on Higher Education (CHE) and is a member of the South African Business Schools Association (SABSA), and the Association of African Business Schools (AABS).
