POST ACCREDITATION INITIATIVES Jayaraj Annapackiam College for Women (Autonomous), Periyakulam strives hard to give integral formation to the underprivileged rural young women of the locale and help them to grow as responsible citizens and principled leaders. In recognition of the peerless four decades-long pioneering service in imparting Quality Higher Education, the college secured FOUR STARS in the process of accreditation (Cycle 1) in 2001 and A grade in the process of reaccreditation (Cycle 2) in 2008 from NAAC. Departments of Physics and Computer Science offer self-study papers to earn extra credits. UGC sponsored three level (Certificate / Diploma / Advanced Diploma) Career Oriented Course in Office Automation to be conducted from 2013-2014. Proposal has been forwarded to UGC to start Women s Study Centre in the college and the result is awaited. Criterion II: Teaching, Learning and Evaluation General Recommendation by NAAC Peer Team, 2008 Exposure of students and teachers to the recent developments of higher education system. 19 National seminars / conferences / workshops sponsored by UGC / CSIR are conducted which included sessions on recent developments in the respective subjects, details of which are given in answer to Qn. No.3.1.8. Students are exposed to recent developments by attending national seminars / conferences / workshops in other institutions apart from Intercollegiate meets which are evidenced by their paper presentations and publications. Spoken English Training is given to all the freshers before the commencement of the programmes. Soft Skill Training is given to all the outgoing students to enable them to face the competitive exams and interviews for employment. Criterion III: Research, Consultancy and Extension General Recommendation by NAAC Peer Team, 2008 Linkage and MoUs may be established with external agencies and more research projects can be applied for from different funding agencies. Steps have been taken to have a linkage with Liverpool Hope University, U.K. to promote teaching, learning and research. According to the norms of TANSCHE, project work has been made mandatory for all UG, PG and M.Phil. programmes during revision of curriculum during 2008-2009 and 2011-2012. MoUs are signed for the conduct of certificate, SBE courses, Soft skill training, Spoken English classes and campus drives by Placement cell, student project of Department of Commerce, details of which are given in answer to Qn. No. 3.7.3. Six major research projects funded by UGC have been initiated with a total outlay of 55,08,900/- and one of them is an inter disciplinary. Nine minor research projects funded UG have been initiated / completed with a total outlay of 9,10,000/-. Three students were sanctioned with grants from TNSCST for their project work under Student Project Scheme. Departments of History and Zoology are upgraded as research centre by the affiliating University (MTWU, Kodaikanal). Ten faculty members were recognized as research supervisors by various universities. Seven faculty members were recognized as reviewers of various national / international journals and members of various Academic / Professional bodies. Faculty members have to formulate quality research proposals in frontier areas and explore large grants from national funding agencies. This suggestion is carried out by the following measures. Six major research projects funded by UGC have been initiated with a total outlay of 55,08,900/-. Nine minor research projects funded by UGC have been initiated / completed with a total outlay of 9,10,000/-. Two student projects are sanctioned by TNSCST under Student Project Scheme for 20,000/-. Faculty members have yet to publish their research work in journals. 33 research papers have been published in national journals and 139 research papers in International journals. The College is yet to set up a Consultancy Cell and take consultancy projects to promote consultancy services. Consultancy Cell has been initiated to promote fullfledged consultancy services. More funds may be allocated for maintenance of infrastructure and enriching the library. RO system is installed in the college and hostel to provide purified drinking water. Computers with all accessories are provided to all departments. Traditional black boards are replaced by ceramic boards in 12 classrooms. ICT enabled classrooms, Internet facility and classrooms with Interactive Boards are provided to all departments to make teaching learning process innovative and rewarding. Basic Science Research Laboratory has been installed and utilized by the Departments of Physics, Chemistry and Zoology for research work. Bar-coding system and Surveillance cameras are installed in the Central library. All students were given free access to internet for 4 hours per semester. Additional internet facility is provided for the hostel students. New Software (Flair) is installed in the department computers for CIA mark entry through intranet. Biometric database of teaching and non-teaching staff is maintained at the college office. Criterion V: Student Support and Progression Establishment of alumni association and utilization of their resources for college development Student Centre may be established. Sports and games activities may be enhanced. Efforts to be made to encourage more students to appear for competitive examinations. JAC SAFA - Youth Parliament has been initiated with different ministries, to develop leadership skills and to instill civic responsibilities in students. Indoor Sports Centre is established Minority Cell is initiated and Remedial Coaching, Coaching for SET / NET and other competitive examinations are given to the students of these communities. Indira Gandhi PG Scholarship for Single Girl Child, Tamil Nadu Farmer s Social Security Scheme, Tamil Nadu Minority Scholarship and Indira Gandhi PG Merit Scholarship are the new Scholarships availed for the eligible students during the post accreditation period. 8 students received UGC PG Merit Scholarship and one student received Indian Science Academies Summer Research fellowship programme. Criterion VI: Governance, Leadership and Management Participatory decision making and implementation with decentralization of planning and administration More welfare schemes for staff may be taken up. According to the Corporate Higher Education Policy of the Congregation of the Sisters of St. Anne of Tiruchirappalli, UGC norms for Autonomous Colleges, Guidelines of TANSCHE and MTWU, rights and responsibilities are decentralized by extending membership to the stake holders-faculty members, non-teaching staff, University nominees, external experts, industry experts, parents, alumni, students etc., in the statutory and non-statutory bodies. Contributory Provident Fund scheme for un-aided faculty has been implemented recently. Festival Gift in terms of money is given to the management staff. College bus fee concession is extended to the nonteaching staff. 64 aided teaching and the non-teaching staff are benefitted from ACPF (Aided College Provident Fund), 11 faculty members from CPS (Contributory Pension Scheme) and 72 faculty members from NHIS (New Health Insurance Scheme). Faculty members and students who publish their research work in reputed journals and faculty members who complete major / minor research project are honoured in the College Annual Day with medals. Library stock verification is done by the Computer Assisted-Portable Data Collection Terminal. Consumer Club is initiated to make the inmates of the campus aware of the consumer rights and duties and to impart them to the people of the locale. Harmony Club is initiated to conduct programmes to inculcate social, communal, and religious harmony in the minds of the students. Criterion VII: Innovations and Best Practices Alternative energy sources may be tapped for fulfilling the energy requirements of the college. Solar inverters for fans and lights, solar lights and water heaters in the hostel, solar lights in the campus pathways, bio-gas plant, gobar gas plant and night soil plant are installed for utilization of alternative energy sources. College Bazaar - a Trade Show in collaboration with Self Help Group Women of the locality was organized by Department of Business Administration to develop the entrepreneurial skills of the students.
