It highlights the differences between laws and policies, particularly as they affect operations and includes definitions of transportation and related special education terms, transportation requirements of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA); Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act; the Americans with Disabilities Act Amendments; and the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act. There is a specific focus on the characteristics of children with disabilities and the relationship of the Individualized Education Program (IEP) process to the provision of the related service transportation. Scenarios are used to discuss multiple hot topics including discipline, climate controlled school buses, door-to-door transportation, medication and oxygen transport. With respect to the related service transportation, school district transportation personnel should be knowledgeable about the requirements of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act of 2004 generally identified as the IDEA; The Rehabilitation Act of 1973, also known as Section 504 which is a nondiscrimination statute and has played a significant role in transportation complaints; and The Americans with Disabilities Act Amendments of 2008 which has been identified in school transportation issues in that it expanded the Section 504 definition of major life activity.
