THE NOVA SCOTIA FREEMASONS SCHOLARSHIP VIRGIN LODGE NUMBER 3 DEADLINE: MAY 19, 2015 to MR. O'MALLEY A scholarship for $1000 is offered to a promising scholar who wishes to pursue a post secondary education leading to a degree from an approved institution in Atlantic Canada, or a diploma, or certificate from a Community College in Nova Scotia. The High Schools that we will accept applications from include: Halifax West; JL Ilsley; Dartmouth; Prince Andrew and Eastern Shore District High School. Conditions of the Scholarship This scholarship is offered for a one-year period starting the 1 st of September 2015. If for some reason, the candidate cannot begin his or her studies as scheduled, he/she can begin within four months after the 1 st of September 2015. In the case of a delay of more than four months, another candidate must be chosen. The amount of the scholarship will be $1000.00. The money is paid in one installment of $1000.00 paid directly to the University upon receipt of an invoice from that University. The student must present his or her award letter from us to the Registrar at their University or Community College. The school will then invoice the Masonic Foundation for their funds. Merit Criteria The scholarship is offered to those students who hold a grade 12 point average of 70% and above from all reported marks. The scholarship is offered to those students who have participated in voluntary community service activities as well as participation in extra-curricular activity within the school during the current academic year. As an example, types of community service could include Scouts or Girl Guides of Canada; Cadets; IWK volunteer; Canadian Red Cross; Meals on Wheels, Habitat for Humanity, etc. In addition to demonstrated need, the types of extra-curricular activities within the school could include sports; student council; music; drama, etc.
Application Procedure Candidates can obtain the necessary forms for the Virgin Lodge Number 3 Scholarship from their Guidance Office. Applicants for the Virgin Lodge No. 3 Scholarship are to send in their applications to their School Scholarship Committee in accordance with school regulations and deadlines. Each candidate s application should include the following: a completed copy of the application form; a photocopy/transcript of all reported marks; a 3 x 5 photograph (preferably in colour) of themselves; an abstract or short letter of 200 words describing the basis of financial need for this scholarship and their community participation; and, two written recommendations from present or past teachers, professors or members of the community. Successful candidates, upon receipt of the award at their Graduation ceremony, will forward a short letter for acknowledgement purposes and mailed to Virgin Lodge #3 before July 15 th, 2015. A photo with their presenter during the Graduation ceremony will be taken, a copy of which should be forwarded to the Administrator. Please note that in addition, those students choosing Saint Mary s University or Dalhousie University are eligible for a matching $1000.00 President s Award if they do well at Christmas, and are still enrolled for the second semester. The importance of including your Social Insurance Number cannot be overemphasized, as without it, we cannot by law award these monies to the successful applicant. This has happened in the past.
