Digitally Enhanced Learning Mount Hutt College

What is Digitally Enhanced Learning? This is the term our school is using to describe the use of technology as a tool in the classroom to improve outcomes for students.

What is BYOD? Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) is the terminology being used in education that encourages students to bring their own portable computers to school and into the classroom to assist and enhance their learning.

Why BYOD?

Educational research says... http://www.minedu.govt.nz/theministry/educationinitiatives/ufbinschools/futurefocusedlearning.aspx "Our young people need to be digitally competent, so they can participate successfully in a modern economy and society, support their families, and contribute to the wider community. Whether our children aspire to be software developers for America s Cup yachts, dairy farmers, motor mechanics or fashion designers, digital competencies are now a universal requirement.

In order to succeed in life students need the following skills. elearning and our curriculum document supports all of these skills.

An example of the skills above

Why has MHC introduced BYOD? To prepare our students for future tertiary study and the work environment. To increase collaborative learning opportunities. To access electronic resources. To improve engagement and motivation of our students. To improve the quality of teaching and learning.

Why has MHC introduced BYOD? Following the direction of the Ministry of Education for future focused learning. As recommended by international research. As a result of a specialist BYOD class trialled at Year 8 this year. To work in the digital world that many of our students live in.

BYOD roll out plan 2015 - Some Year 7, many Year 8: spread across classes - All of Year 9, strongly encouraged in Year 13 - Some Year 10, 11, 12: spread across classes 2016 - More Year 7, 11, 12: spread across classes - All Year 8, 9, 10, strongly encouraged in Year 13 2017 - Most students across all year levels

Year 8 Digital Class 2014

Comments from staff, students, parents... "The impact and engagement has been phenomenal. I have been astounded by the knowledge acquisition for class topics from using the device as a means to research and access the world." "It's really great because we can go on learning sites all at once instead of taking turns on the computers." "The opportunity for personalised learning programmes. Engagement and motivation of the students. Able to complete tasks more quickly with high standard of presentation. Easy to collaborate and share their work with others and their teacher, getting important feedback."

Comments from staff, students, parents... "Impressed with the responsibility and knowledge for the device. Learning from school is shared. Calendars are set up with reminders on the device. Becomes an integral tool. Watching the learning being accessed from home as a parent has been completely enlightening." "He is more motivated to the school work in general." "It makes everything so much easier and accessible, It also helps with my learning because if you aren't sure about something in class then you can search it up. Also it saves a lot time time because we don't have to glue in lots of sheets."
