Leakey Independent School District Plan: 2011 - Executive Summary This document details the current technology environment at Leakey Independent School District, and includes recommendations for upgrading existing technology as well as providing new technology and training for students, teachers, staff and administration. procedures, standards and training are constantly being updated, evaluated, and refined to improve and raise the bar on technology education and understanding. Leakey ISD views technology as one of the many tools that will enhance the ability of students, staff and administration to learn and grow intellectually. In order for technology to become an effective tool we need to stay current with hardware, software, training and understanding. We believe that one of our main responsibilities is to encourage our students and teachers to explore technology. Faculty and staff familiarity with computers and other technologies, through active personal and professional use, is necessary before teachers can guide students to effectively use computers and other technologies as a tool to nurture their ability and desire to learn. Leakey Independent School District Plan: 2011 - Needs Assessment Assessment Process: Leakey ISD is continually assessing the needs of the district. These assessments are based on annual assessment using the following implements and procedures: 1. Current state of technology inventory 2. integration in the curriculum via reviews of teacher lesson plans showing technology use and integration. 3. development/training for teachers, teaching assistants and administration staff 4. Statistical review of WAN and LAN resources and utilization. 5. Monthly Committee meetings 6. Community input is requested through surveys and questionnaires. All this information is gathered and complied annually to provide a bases for planning and budgeting for the upcoming years. These assessment also provide guidance to administration and teachers with regards to enhancing technology awareness, integration and understanding for students and staff. Existing Conditions: Leakey ISD intends to continue to upgrade and expand our technology base so students and teachers will have the necessary tools to maintain the effective, unique teaching and learning practices they have exhibited in the past. We are updating all of our electronics to current technologies. To this effect Leakey ISD has upgraded the entire MDF (Main Distribution Front Server Closet) to include the following: a new Windows Domain and Active y environment, a new Exchange (E-mail services), new File servers. We are currently leveraging newer technology such as Virtualization of service and servers to cut costs of hardware. All old servers were recycled and replaced with newer and faster systems and/or virtualized environments. In order to support these newer technologies, we need to upgrade our cable plant to category six wiring and multi-mode fiber runs from outlaying building back to the MDF. Leakey ISD is currently upgrading switches in the field to provided gigabyte and Power over Ethernet backbone. Wireless systems have be put in place to cut costs of cabling in areas where it is feasible. A Voice over IP solution has been implemented to enhance communications between administrators, educators and parents. Leakey ISD has invested in power backup units at each IDF (Individual Distribution Front building switch plants or network closets) to ensure up-time and surge protection for the network infrastructure. Theses upgrades and recycling of our current technologies will involve all MDF and IDF switches, routers, UPS s, new servers, firewall device and content video. Leakey ISD has acquired digital content video streaming to provide live content to desktop and laptops in the district. This content will include (but not limited to) educational content, digitalizing of Library video for instant delivery to classrooms, pod casting of news and events. The following technology is currently in place: District-Wide Direct connection to the Internet via 1 Fiber link providing 20Mibs through local provider. One direct T1 link providing 1.5Mibs for distance learning District remote hosted web server, providing district information and student work. Upon completion of the review it was found that teachers are in need of more training in the use and instruction of technology. Leakey ISD needs to focus on training teachers to use a facilitator approach to teaching students to use technology to create communities of inquiry within their own community. Also, emphasis needs to be placed on teachers using technology for research, lesson planning, multimedia and graphical presentations, and to correspond with experts, peers, and parents. In addition, regular technology use needs to be integrated into curriculum activities in various settings (computer labs, library, and cart systems). A focus needs to be placed on integrating technology into TEKS, TAKS, and other foundation subject areas across the subject and grade levels campus-wide. The elementary levels need to add most, if not all, technology applications TEKS into the curriculum. Students will work with peers and experts (instructors, teachers and outside staff) to evaluate information, analyze data and content to problem solve. Students need to be able to use appropriate technology to convey knowledge and skills they have learned. While Leakey ISD teachers use technology for administrative tasks and classroom management, teachers need to use technology for teaching and learning and to use online resources to enrich instruction. The teachers are currently working hard to meet at least 60% of SBEC s proficiencies and implement into classroom standards. Leakey ISD currently recognizes and identifies exemplary use of technology in instruction, and will start to ensure integration of appropriate technologies to maximize learning and teaching in the future. Leakey ISD has always put professional development at the forefront of a teacher s continuing education and training and as such technology development will always be a long-term and ongoing standard. Leakey ISD is currently moving forward with the level of understanding and pattern of use that teachers are displaying from an adaptation stage to an appropriation stage. To facilitate this goal, Leakey ISD is moving toward budgeting at least 25% of the technology budget for technology professional development. Leakey ISD is now budgeting 100% of Title II, Part D funds to staff development. Leakey ISD administration has been making strides to improve and keep up-to-date technologies for staff and students. The administration is actively working with the technology staff to update the technology plan. Administration sees the need for the plan to be collaboratively developed and the guiding policy and practices are updated annually. The administration actively uses technology in all aspects of planning and decision-making. Currently, Leakey ISD employs 1 technical staff member for the entire school district. The staff member is responsible for 225 computers systems, 15 servers, 21 data projectors, 1 digital document cameras, 32 printers, and numerous other technology devices. staff is able to use remote management software tools on most systems. Response times are at 4+ hours depending on type of problem and location. The campus budget is adequate for hardware and software purchases, professional development, staffing support and ongoing costs. Projected year has the technology allotment with E-Rate discounts applied to the technology budget and is locally supplemented through tax dollars. Leakey Independent School District Plan: 2011 - Leakey ISD has been fortunate to a recipient of numerous TIF grants and one TIF CN grant. These grants helped to create a high-speed backbone on which to build a powerful network. The network is currently running at 1 GB duplex switched to the workstations and 1GB Fiber from all buildings to the MDF. This network will be used to distribute on-demand access to the Internet, multimedia, video streaming, distance learning (currently only available in one lab setting and more is needed), web-based content, and applications to the student body and staff of the entire district. More online or web-based content for learning is needed for the continued success of the Leakey ISD students. While technology equipment is available for teacher use, more training for teachers is required to enable them to fully utilize the technology equipment for student instruction and curriculum enhancement. Previously, students checked out laptop computers; however, those became obsolete. A high / middle school lab was create that is also a dual purpose Plato Lab. Students taking college level dual credit classes are issue laptop (currently 12 laptops) and are in the field. The current needs of the campus are: Classroom/Teaching environment needs: Workstations / Portable Systems o The current Elementary and Jr/HS labs are out-dated and as such need to be refreshed. This will require 52 new pc-based workstations. o The current Yearbook lab is out-dated and as such need to be refreshed. All aspects of the Plan will be evaluated formally twice each year in November and May. The Plan Committee will be responsible for the ongoing evaluation of this plan. These assessment also provide guidance to administration and teachers with regards to enhancing technology awareness, integration and understanding for students and staff. Existing Conditions Leakey ISD intends to continue to upgrade and expand our technology base so students and teachers will have the necessary tools to maintain the effective, unique teaching and learning practices they have exhibited in the past. We are updating all of our electronics to current technologies. To this effect Leakey ISD has upgraded the entire MDF (Main Distribution Front Server Closet) to include the following: a new Windows Domain and Active y environment, a new Exchange (E-mail services), new File servers. We are currently leveraging newer technology such as Virtualization of service and servers to cut costs of hardware. All old servers were recycled and replaced with newer and faster systems and/or virtualized environments. In order to support these newer technologies, we need to upgrade our cable plant to category six wiring and multi-mode fiber runs from outlaying building back to the MDF. Leakey ISD is currently upgrading switches in the field to provided gigabyte and Power over Ethernet backbone. Wireless systems have be put in place to cut costs of cabling in areas where it is feasible. A Voice over IP solution has been implemented to enhance communications between administrators, educators and parents. Leakey ISD has invested in power backup units at each IDF (Individual Distribution Front building switch plants or network closets) to ensure up-time and surge protection for the network infrastructure. Theses upgrades and recycling of our current technologies will involve all MDF and IDF switches, routers, UPS s, new servers, firewall device and content video. Leakey ISD has acquired digital content video streaming to provide live content to desktop and laptops in the district. This content will include (but not limited to) educational content, digitalizing of Library video for instant delivery to classrooms, pod casting of news and events. Upon completion of the review it was found that teachers are in need of more training in the use and instruction of technology. Leakey ISD needs to focus on training teachers to use a facilitator approach to teaching students to use technology to create communities of inquiry within their own community. Also, emphasis needs to be placed on teachers using technology for research, lesson planning, multimedia and graphical presentations, and to correspond with experts, peers, and parents. In addition, regular technology use needs to be integrated into curriculum activities in various settings (computer labs, library, and cart systems). A focus needs to be placed on integrating technology into TEKS, TAKS, and other foundation subject areas across the subject and grade levels campus-wide. The elementary levels need to add most, if not all, technology applications TEKS into the curriculum. Students will work with peers and experts (instructors, teachers and outside staff) to evaluate information, analyze data and content to problem solve. Students need to be able to use appropriate technology to convey knowledge and skills they have learned. While Leakey ISD teachers use technology for administrative tasks and classroom management, teachers need to use technology for teaching and learning and to use online resources to enrich instruction. The teachers are currently working hard to meet at least 60% of SBEC s proficiencies and implement into classroom standards. Leakey ISD currently recognizes and identifies exemplary use of technology in instruction, and will start to ensure integration of appropriate technologies to maximize learning and teaching in the future. Leakey ISD has always put professional development at the forefront of a teacher s continuing education and training and as such technology development will always be a long-term and ongoing standard. Leakey ISD is currently moving forward with the level of understanding and pattern of use that teachers are displaying from an adaptation stage to an appropriation stage. To facilitate this goal, Leakey ISD is moving toward budgeting at least 25% of the technology budget for technology professional development. Leakey ISD is now budgeting 100% of Title II, Part D funds to staff development. Leakey ISD administration has been making strides to improve and keep up-to-date technologies for staff and students. The administration is actively working with the technology staff to update the technology plan. Administration sees the need for the plan to be collaboratively developed and the guiding policy and practices are updated annually. The administration actively uses technology in all aspects of planning and decision-making. Currently, Leakey ISD employs 1 technical staff member for the entire school district. The staff member is responsible for 225 computers systems, 15 servers, 21 data projectors, 1 digital document cameras, 32 printers, and numerous other technology devices. staff is able to use remote management software tools on most systems. Response times are at 4+ hours depending on type of problem and location. The campus budget is adequate for hardware and software purchases, professional development, staffing support and ongoing costs. Projected year has the technology allotment with E-Rate discounts applied to the technology budget and is locally supplemented through tax dollars. There is a need for a full time technology administrator and extra staff for the technology that is developing in this District. Leakey ISD has been fortunate to a recipient of numerous TIF grants and one TIF CN grant. These grants helped to create a high-speed backbone on which to build a powerful network. While technology equipment is available for teacher use, more training for teachers is required to enable them to fully utilize the technology equipment for student instruction and curriculum enhancement.
