Medical Radiography Program Admission Information This is a selective admission program. A limited number of students are admitted into the program biannually. Class size is determined by the availability of clinical space. Limited enrollment ensures a quality laboratory and clinical experience needed to become a competent entry level radiographer. To be considered for selection to the Medical Radiography Program the following steps must be completed: 1. Be admitted to San Jacinto College. Visit our website at http://www.sanjac.edu/appl. 2. Provide Official Transcripts A. High School Diploma or GED Certificate required. B. Students with any transfer credits MUST have college transcripts analyzed by San Jacinto College (enrollment services transcript evaluation) prior to submitting an application. C. Medical Imaging Department Chair has final approval of all transferred courses that apply toward the degree in Medical Radiography. D. Transcripts from other colleges must be official and sent to: a) Office of Enrollment Services and b) Medical Radiography Office 3. Completion of all of the following prerequisite courses with a minimum of a C before admission to the program. BIOL 2301 Anatomy & Physiology I Lecture AND BIOL 2101 Lab BIOL 2302 Anatomy & Physiology II Lecture AND BIOL 2102 - Lab ENGL 1301 Composition I RADR 1201 Introduction to Radiography MATH 1314 College Algebra or 1333 Contemporary Mathematics for Technical Programs Any of the following support courses requires a minimum of a C also and if not achieved the course must be retaken until successful. Speech 1315 Public Speaking or 1318 Interpersonal Communications Behavioral or S. Science Humanities or Fine Arts Academic science courses must not have been completed earlier than five (5) years prior to program acceptance. RADR 1201 must be complete no more than three (3) years prior to a student s entry into the Medical Radiography Program. If either of these time requirements are exceeded the student must retake the course successful with a minimum grade of C. Higher level math such as Calculus may be evaluated for possible substitution if a student was placed out of college algebra. A higher level English course may be evaluated for possible substitution if a student has placed into a higher level English. Substitutions must be approved by the Department Chair and Dean of Health Sciences. 4. Completion of the program required entrance examination (HESI A2). The original score sheet indicating a recommended score of 70% or higher on each required section must be submitted with application. 5. Computer Literacy Students must be deemed computer literate before being accepted into the Medical Radiography Program by either completing the Computer Literacy Skills Test at SJC, by successfully completing ITSC 1309 or BCIS 1305 or another course approved by the Department Chair. If a student requesting to take the Computer Literacy Skills Test they may attempt the exam one time. To schedule the computer Page 1

literacy test a student must receive an exam request form from an educational planner. The form must be completed and taken to the business office to pay the $20 exam fee. The business office will provide a receipt which the student must present to the testing center to schedule and take the exam. Once the exam has been completed, results will be available within two days at either the educational planning office or the enrollment services office. The student should consult with an educational planner after receiving the exam result. Attend a MANDATORY information meeting as posted on the San Jacinto College Website at http://www.sanjac.edu/areas-study#medical-imaging or by calling 281-476-1871 for dates. 7. Receive and complete a Medical Imaging application by deadline of June 1 or October 15. 8. Complete a criminal background check and urine drug screen before admission (but after selection) into the program by a designated deadline. Instructions for completing this requirement will be provided by Certified Background after the accepted applicant obtains an account. 9. After acceptance into the Medical Radiography Program, you must provide proof of a minimum of the following: TB skin test (within last 12 months), Chest x-ray (if applicable), Flu Vaccine (2014-2015), Tdap (2006 or later), MMR (#2 and positive titer), Varicella (#2 and positive titer), Hepatitis B (#3 and positive titer), Health Insurance, and CPR certification (AHA-BLS Healthcare provider). These health requirements will be submitted (uploaded) to Certified Background by accepted students. Selection Criteria Students who apply for admission to the Medical Radiography Program will be selected based on the total score on the application rubric to include both GPA and HESI A2 entrance examination scores. Meeting minimal entry requirements does not guarantee program admission. Application Periods The Medical Radiography Program accepts applicant twice a year. Application periods are April 1 through June 1, for fall admission; and September 1 through October 15, for spring admission. Applicants will be notified regarding their selection for admission into the Medical Radiography Program. Applicants not selected for admission must re-apply to be considered for future admission. Applicants who are selected for admission into the Medical Radiography Program, but do not accept the position or do not complete the enrollment process must also re-apply. It is the student s responsibility to stay current with any changes in program requirements. Health Students selected for the Medical Radiography program are required to submit a physical exam prior to admission. This physical exam must be consistent with the requirements of the teaching hospitals and agencies the student are assigned during clinical assignments and the performance standards required to function as a student imaging technologist. The exam will also include documentation of any communicable diseases along with immunity to Rubella, Measles, Mumps, and Varicella. Completion of the Hepatitis B series along with updated Tetanus, an annual TB screening and flu vaccine is required. In addition to meeting all other requirements, students entering a Medical Imaging Program will be required to submit proof of CPR (American Heart Associate- Health Care Provider) certification. HESI A 2 Required Sections ENGLISH LANGUAGE Reading Comprehension Provides reading scenarios in order to measure reading comprehension, identifying the main idea, finding meaning of words in context, passage comprehension, making logical inferences, etc. A minimum score of 70% is required Vocabulary and General Knowledge Contains vocabulary terms that are commonly used in both English speaking settings and in health care fields. A minimum score of 70% is required Grammar Contains basic grammar, including parts of speech, important terms and their uses, commonly occurring grammatical errors, etc. A minimum score of 70% is required MATH Basic Math Skills Focuses on math skills needed for health care fields, including basic addition, subtraction, multiplication, fractions, decimals, ration and proportion, household measures, general math facts, etc. A minimum score of 70% is required SCIENCE Biology Covers biology basics, water, biological molecules, metabolism, cells, cellular respiration, photosynthesis, etc. A minimum score of 70% is required Anatomy and Physiology Provides coverage of general terminology and anatomical structures and systems. A minimum score of 70% is required LEARNER PROFILE Learning Style Assesses preferred learning style. (Required but not used in determining acceptance into the Radiography program) Page 3

HESI A 2 Information PRIOR to arriving to test, you MUST create an account with Evolve. The HESI Health Profession A 2 entrance exam will be required for application to the Radiography program at San Jacinto College Central. The exam consists of Reading Comprehension, Grammar, Math, Biology, Vocabulary, Anatomy & Physiology, and Learning Styles sections. There is a 4 hour time limit on the HESI A 2 exam. Once minimum scores are earned, they will be good for 3 years. The HESI A 2 is a computerized radiography entrance exam required for applying to the Medical Radiography program. There is a 4 hour time limit for examinees to take the exam that begins when the instructions are read. However, the average time most examinees take for completing the entire exam is two and a half to three hours. This can vary depending on your reading speed and amount of time to answer questions. Further information regarding the HESI A 2 test is available at http://evolve.elsevier.com/exam. 1. The HESI A 2 exam is only available to San Jacinto College Central students and is only administered at SJC Central. 2. To register, first create a username and password at https://evolve.elsevier.com/exam then pay the $40 proctor fee (payment can be made by check, money order, cash, or credit card) at the SJC-Central Testing Center. Examinees must register in person at the Testing Center, Room C3.133, Central Campus. You cannot schedule the HESI A 2 exam by phone or online. 3. The HESI A 2 test fee is $40.00 (payment must be debit or credit card) and must be paid online on test day. 4. Seating is limited for all test dates. Registration is on a first come first serve basis. Test dates may close before registration deadline due to high volume of registrants. The Testing Center does not have study materials available for the HESI HP A 2 exam; however, the study guide for Evolve Reach Admission Assessment Exam Review (HESI) can be purchased at the bookstore at SJC Central. The ISBN # is 978-1-4557-0333-3 It may also be purchased online through Elsevier or through Barnes and Noble. 1. The test can only be taken twice during an academic year. If the test is taken more than twice in an application period, the first test scores will be used for application scoring purposes. 2. A minimum score of 70 (please see Radiography department for further details) on the tests are required before applying to the program. 3. Please submit official copies of your scores with your application. Minimum score of 70 is required for each subject of the test. 4. You can view your HESI A 2 test scores at least 1 hour after testing at http://evolve.elsevier.com. Page 4

Please bring the following on test day: HESI A 2 Admission/Registration form Evolve username & password (you will not be able to test without it) $40 test fee (must be credit or debit card only) Proper photo-identification (you will not be able to test without it) A jacket or sweater (room temperature may vary). If for some reason you must cancel your exam, you must contact the Testing Center no later than two (2) business days prior to your originally scheduled test date. If you fail to cancel less than two (2) business days in advance, you will be required to pay another exam fee or lose your proctoring fee. We do not allow rescheduling of the exam. Please do not bring any unauthorized aids into the test room such as backpacks, study aides, books, dictionaries, notes, scratch paper, highlighters, pens, colored pencils, correction fluid, reading material, tobacco in any form, and/or any electronic devices (for example, beepers, PDA, cell phone, headphones, camera, IPOD, etc.) ***Cell phones are not allowed inside of the test room. You can leave them in your vehicle or the Test Center can hold onto it while you test.*** Parking: There is a parking shortage at certain times of the day. You are advised to arrive at least 30 minutes prior to the scheduled testing time. Do Not Park in Staff Parking at any time. You will receive a SJCD ticket. Page 5
