1. INDIVIDUAL PROGRAMS FOR YEAR 8 STUDENTS The aim of Year 8 is for students to continue to broaden and build their skill base by participating in individual program units that allow students to experience a variety of subjects and learning environments. Alongside this, students will continue in their core subjects to ensure they develop proficiency in these critical areas. 2. WHAT YOUR CHILD WILL STUDY IN 2016 Our program for Year 8 students is divided into two parts. 1. The core program that all students will study English Mathematics Science History (one semester) Geography (one semester) Health & Physical Education & Sport Continue to study a Language other than English (Greek, Italian, or Japanese) 2. The individual program that students will select into so that they can specialise in subjects that suit their individual abilities, interests and needs. Students will study three subjects per semester (six per year) within this Individual Program. All students will have access to studies in a number of subjects within Arts and Technology. Students in need of support will be able to take part in a Literacy Intervention Program for the whole year. Students for whom English is an Additional Language can access the EAL class for the whole year. Enrichment English is aimed at extending students with high ability in this area, giving them more engaging and challenging activities. Enrichment Mathematics is aimed at extending students with high ability in this area. Counsellors will support students in the design of their programs. The full range of subjects available to students in 2016 is shown on page 5. 2 Year 8 2016
3. HOW YOUR CHILD S PROGRAM WILL BE DEVELOPED Each class will have a counsellor to assist all students in the process of developing their individual program for 2016. The counsellor will meet with your child s class to fully discuss the program and answer their questions. A brief description of all subjects in the Individual Program is provided for you and your child to read. Students and families need to fill in and sign the Proposed Individual Program Form and return it to the school using the How to Complete Your Child s Individual Program on pages 6 and 7 as a guide. The completed form should then be returned to the counsellor by Monday 10 th August 2015 or earlier if possible. Please complete the Proposed Individual Program Form Your Record (page 14) for your records. If your child has any questions about this process your child should see their counsellor to discuss their individual program. 6. HOW TO COMPLETE YOUR CHILD S INDIVIDUAL PROGRAM Along with their booklets students have received a Proposed Individual Program form which needs to be completed by following steps 1 to 5 below. Individual Program units include Arts, Technology and Other Units. To ensure that all students gain a broad range of skills and knowledge, students will be expected (as a general rule) during Years 8 and 9 to study a minimum of: Two units of Language other than English Two units of Arts [Visual or Performing] Two units of Technology 1. Languages Other Than English Students studying Greek, Italian or Japanese will continue that same language in Year 8. 2. 4. Other Units Literacy Intervention Program Recommendations for the Literacy Intervention Program will be given to the student by their counsellor. English as an Additional Language Recommendations for English as an Additional Language will be given to the student by their counsellor. English Enrichment Students can only include the Enrichment English unit in their Individual Program if they have been recommended. This information will be given to students by their counsellor. Enrichment Mathematics Students can only include the Enrichment Mathematics unit in their Individual Program if they have been recommended. This information will be given to students by their counsellor. 5. After reading the unit descriptions, please nominate on the Proposed Individual Program form your preferences in order from 1 (most preferred) to 8 (least preferred). 6. 7. BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF SUBJECTS LANGUAGE OTHER THAN ENGLISH (LOTE) GREEK Year-long $40.00 per year Language covered in year 7 will be consolidated and further developed in year 8. Class work will involve the communicative skills of speaking, listening, reading and writing. Cultural content will be covered in class through individual research, class discussion and the viewing of audio-visual content. Students will participate in excursions and/or incursions in order to enhance their language learning and cultural awareness. ITALIAN Year-long $40.00 per year Language covered in year 7 will be consolidated and further developed in year 8. Class work will involve the communicative skills of speaking, listening, reading and writing. Cultural content will be covered in class through individual research, class discussion and the viewing of audio-visual content. Students will participate in excursions and/or incursions in order to enhance their language learning and cultural awareness. JAPANESE Year-long $40.00 per year Language covered in year 7 will be consolidated and further developed in year 8. Class work will involve the communicative skills of speaking, listening, reading and writing. Cultural content will be covered in class through individual research, class discussion and the viewing of audio-visual content. VISUAL ARTS ART & DESIGN 1 (Everyday Life) $45.00 Semester 1 This unit gives students an insight into how art and design relate to everyday life. Students develop design skills in drawing and paper collage, 3 dimensional lettering styles and sculptural skills. They learn about Pop Art and the art elements and apply this knowledge to their practical work and theoretical studies. Students will reflect on their own artworks and will learn to consider issues related to effectively presenting their artworks. They will also discuss and write about different artists and their work in response to their practical studies. The unit can be taken as a single unit or in conjunction with the other Art &Design unit. ART & DESIGN 2 (Different Viewpoints) $45.00 Semester 2 In this unit students focus on how people perceive the world in different ways. Students learn about the difference between realistic and abstract art and create artworks using both traditional and contemporary methods. In particular, students will look at how portraiture and space is represented in art, developing drawing and printmaking skills. Students will evaluate their artworks and will learn a variety of ways to present their artworks. They will also learn to analyse and consider a variety of interpretations when looking at artworks related to their practical studies. The unit can be taken as a single unit or in conjunction with the other Art & Design unit. ARTIST IN RESIDENCE [This includes payment for artist] $100.00 Offered in Year 8 and 9: Artist in Residence is a unit that offers students who have a strong interest in Art an opportunity to engage in challenging activities beyond the general art courses. An artist works with students in the class for up to 10 sessions, involving them in tasks related to their own art practice, with the expectation that students can use a higher level of initiative and enquiry. This subject is suitable for any student willing to extend their personal ideas and approach to art-making. OBSERVATIONAL DRAWING $45.00 Offered in Year 8 and 9: Observational Drawing is a unit that offers students who have a particular interest in drawing an opportunity to strengthen their technical, visual, and creative skills. By observing various still-life set-ups and real-life environments, students build confidence in their ability to render images directly in a variety of media. There is an expectation that those participating engage in styles and approaches that may be unfamiliar to their preferred way of working, as a means to developing personal artistic skills. Students are advised that they should select Artist in Residence and/or Observational Drawing only once, whether in Yr8 or Yr9. It is recommended that one or more of the other available Visual Arts subjects is selected to compliment these units. This will give students greater variety of experience and skill development. PERFORMING ARTS DANCE $35.00 In Year 8 Dance, students explore different ways of choreographing to communicate meaning. They use a range of themes, both independently and in groups, to create dance sequences. Throughout the unit, there is also a focus on developing their dance technique, coordination and flexibility. Students perform their dances to an audience as a culmination of their learning in the unit. Students analyse their own and others dance works and write responses to these in order to complete the Dance Analysis work requirement. DRAMA $35.00 In Year 8 Drama, students select and structure elements of drama to produce plays. They collaborate to explore the contexts of characters and situations. Students use their performance skills to effectively communicate their products. They analyse group work and develop stagecraft elements such as props, costumes, lighting and sound to enhance their performances. They also begin to make judgements about the purpose and qualities of drama from different periods and cultures. Drama students are required to attend a major school production and write a response in order to complete the Performance Analysis work requirement MUSIC THEATRE & PERFORMANCE $35.00 Offered in Year 8 and 9: In this unit students observe and research the conventions and traditions of Musical Theatre. They then apply this knowledge to their own works. Through a series of practical activities the students will develop their music, drama and dance skills. This unit is designed for students who have an interest in theatre and musical performance projects and who enjoy the challenge of rigorous skill development activity in this genre. Students are required to attend a major school production and write a response in order to complete the Performance Analysis work requirement. THEATRE SPORTS $35.00 Offered in Year 8 and 9: This unit focuses on the development of improvisation skills and comic exaggeration through a games format. Students become familiar with the structure of set scenarios and develop associated performance skills through rehearsal and refinement. This unit is designed for students who have an interest in acting and theatre and who wish to further develop their comic exaggeration technique. Students are required to attend a major school production and write a response in order to complete the Performance Analysis work requirement. 10 Year 8 2016
MUSIC Ensemble or Strings $505.00 $35.00 per year plus $470.00 Instrumental Tuition Levy per year $200 Instrument Hire Fee per year (if applicable) STUDENTS LEARNING AN INSTRUMENT AT SCHOOL WILL TAKE THIS UNIT AS A YEAR-LONG STUDY. They extend their level of aural sensitivity in making choices about the use of musical elements in performance, composition, arrangement, improvisation and interpreting other works. Students explore a range of theoretical concepts, different styles of music and develop skills in instrumental performance. Students will also play in a variety of ensembles and will be required to take part in school concerts. Rehearsals may be held after school and during lunchtime. The prerequisite for this subject is successful completion of Year 7 Band or String Ensemble. Students who did not study Year 7 Music will be required to audition to be considered for entry into Year 8 Music. Year 8-2016 11
OTHER UNITS LITERACY INTERVENTION PROGRAM Year long. This intervention program is aimed at assisting students with their literacy skills. Students will be allocated to this program by the Special Learning Needs Program Coordinator in consultation with their class teachers. Students are provided with the opportunity to develop decoding and comprehension skills. In this program two teachers work with students using phonetic based instruction, reciprocal teaching strategies and vocabulary and spelling instruction to target individual literacy needs. ENGLISH AS AN ADDITIONAL LANGUAGE [EAL] Year long. EAL Year 8 and 9 is an integrated study of the English language for students who have come from a non-english speaking background. The subject runs all year so that students receive support in developing their English language skills to help them in other classes. They will be assessed along the EAL continuum and complete reading comprehension and writing tasks, such as personal writing, narratives and persuasive writing. ENRICHMENT ENGLISH Students ability to speak effectively for different purposes and situations is refined by exposure to and practice with a graduated series of speaking activities. Students listen to and produce spoken texts ranging from participation in structured discussion and role plays to debates and formal speeches. ENRICHMENT MATHEMATICS $12.50 Year 8 Enrichment Mathematics is additional to the timetabled classes and is part of the Individual Program Unit. Students will be offered the opportunity to participate in the Enrichment Mathematics Program after consideration of test results and information from their Year 7 teachers. Enrichment Mathematics gives high achieving enthusiastic mathematics students the opportunity to take part in more challenging and engaging activities. In small group settings, students will use manipulatives, problem solving strategies, games and group discussion to generate understanding about mathematics. 12 Year 8 2016
TECHNOLOGY DESIGN & TECHNOLOGY (Wood & Textiles) $75.00 In this unit students will use the design process as a strategy to solve problems related to the construction and decoration of 3D products. There will be an emphasis on safety and skill development using a variety of hand tools and equipment. The projects will be printed boxer shorts and a timber laminated board. FILM ANALYSIS AND PRODUCTION $60.00 In this unit students learn about the three stages of film production: pre-production, production and post-production. They view several iconic films from a wide range of genres and periods, analysing key elements such as direction, cinematography, storyboarding and screenwriting. There is an emphasis on how the director has used production elements to communicate the story to the audience. They will also work collaboratively to produce their own short film. FOOD TECHNOLOGY $110.00 In this unit students prepare a range of products which focus on the key foods- fruit, vegetables, cereals and meat and poultry. During food preparation they develop their skills in safe and effective use of tools and equipment in the kitchen. Practical sessions will use some traditional recipes as well as those students design. Theory sessions will cover safety, food hygiene and development of skills in the analysis of the properties of food. INFORMATION COMMUNICATION & PRESENTATION $35.00 Students will complete a number of structured tasks to develop an understanding of how information is communicated and presented. This will lead on to incorporating digital technology in an individual design brief. Web 2.0 software will be used to design and produce presentations. Projects involve digital photography, image manipulation and class presentations. SYSTEMS TECHNOLOGY $60.00 This unit enables students to investigate in greater depth how mechanisms and electronics work. These systems will then be incorporated into practical projects. There is a strong emphasis on design, research, presentation and communication of ideas. The major project for this unit will focus on making electronic toys or games. Year 8-2016 13
