For international students wishing to study language at the Language Education Center in Term 1 and/or Term 2, 2018 Overview of the Intensive Language Course The Language Education Center at Saitama University offers an intensive language course for international students who wish to study the language. Students who can study language at the Language Education Center are restricted to those who are allowed by their respective faculties to register for Intensive Language Course and can earn credits. Attending the course without registration is not permitted. The intensive language course is designed for those who wish to study the language comprehensively on a continuous basis in a series of six classes: A to S, from beginner to the advanced level. Subjects Offered The subjects that will be offered in the Intensive Language Course in Terms 1 and 2 are as follows. Classes for each subject will meet two periods a week (except A class and B class). Prospective students can select subjects according to their needs and schedule from among the subjects that are offered in the class in which they are placed based on the result of their placement test. Japan-Korea Joint Program for science and engineering students, studies students, teacher training students, and language trainees, however, cannot select subjects on their own. Their subjects will be designated by the Language Education Center. Students who wish to improve their language comprehensively in the four areas of listening, speaking, reading, and writing; students who are planning to do research and business in language; and students who wish to take the Language Proficiency Test (JLPT) are required to take all the subjects offered in their respective class. Comprehensive, offered in A and B, is a subject where the classes will meet six periods a week for a total of three credits. Students who wish to take this class must attend all the six periods of the class. Enrolling in this subject without attending all six class periods is not permitted. 2

Kanji class, offered in A and B, will be conducted one period a week on semester system. Students who wish to take this class must attend two terms continuously. The Language Education Center may advise students to take certain subjects offered in other classes based on their language proficiency in the four areas of listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Students are not allowed to take subjects offered in other classes for personal reasons. Application To take the Intensive Language Course offered by the Language Education Center, students must submit the application form attached below to the Office of International Affairs by Friday, March 30, and take the placement test and interview that will be held on Wednesday, April 4. Those who wish to register for the course not for Term 1 but only for Term 2 must also take the placement test and interview on this day. Students must have their application form signed by their supervisor or academic advisor (STEPS students by International Student Advisor at International Office). Application forms with any of the required fields left blank or without an supervisor's or academic advisor's signature or personal seal will not be accepted. Graduate students are required to have their application form signed by their supervisor or academic advisor and must submit it to the office of their faculty. The office of their faculty will submit their application to the Office of International Affairs after obtaining approval from the dean of their faculty. Those who have taken a language course at the Language Education Center, Saitama University in the previous term do not have to take the placement test also interview. However they are required to submit the application form. Class placement will be announced on Tuesday, April 3 at noon. Students who fail to submit their application by the deadline cannot take the placement test or interview. Students who fail to take the placement test and interview are not eligible for the Intensive Language course. Class placement based on the placement test and interview will be announced on Thursday, April 5, at noon (please note that class placement will be announced on Wednesday, April 4, for Class E and S). Students who are accepted into the Intensive Language Course are encouraged to participate in their class orientation program that will be held on Thursday, April 5 at 1 p.m or 2 p.m. (please note that class orientation programs for Class E and S will be held on Wednesday, April 4, at 5 p.m.). Students will select their subjects with their language instructors during the orientation period (subjects to be taken by Japan-Korea Joint Program for science and engineering students, 3

studies students, teacher training students, and language trainees, however, will be designated by the Language Education Center).
