MISSION STATEMENT The Mission Statement of the Yankton School District is to optimize student potential for success in a global society. BELIEF STATEMENTS 1. Education is a partnership among the community, parents, students and school personnel; high standards are essential for this partnership to be successful. 2. The school system provides a safe educational environment, which encourages physical, emotional, and academic growth in a culturally diverse society. 3. Learning is enhanced by a positive and supportive atmosphere, which encourages creativity, builds self-esteem, and recognizes students success. 4. Learning requires recognition of each student s instructional style and the use of effective methods, which make learning interesting and individualized. 5. Ethical values, including an appreciation of diversity, integrity, compassion, courage, commitment, and responsibility, are integral to the learning process. 6. With proper guidance, students are capable of making informed choices and are responsible for their actions. 7. Yankton High School Course Syllabus Spanish I Course Description: In Spanish I the student will become familiar with the basics of the Spanish language and culture. Students will learn to speak, read, write and understand basic spoken Spanish. Student Evaluation Plan: Quarter Grade: Tests 50% Quizzes 30% Daily Work 20% Semester Grade Based on 50% of each quarter in that semester Letter Grade Guidelines: As per Yankton High School student handbook QUARTER ONE Goal One: Students will demonstrate knowledge of greetings and leave takings. 1. use polite and accepted forms of greetings and leave taking. 2. use informal forms of greetings and leave taking. 3. respond appropriately to greetings and leave takings. 4. correctly spell and read greetings and leave takings. Goal Two: Students will demonstrate knowledge of basic Spanish vocabulary. 5. spell and pronounce days of the week. 6. spell and pronounce months of the year. 7. spell and pronounce numbers 0-1,000,000. 8. spell and pronounce classroom objects. 9. spell and pronounce the four seasons. 4

Yankton High School Course Syllabus Spanish II Course Description: In Spanish II the student will review concepts taught in Spanish I and further build on knowledge of verbs, verb tenses and grammatical structures. Students will be able to read, write and speak in the target language with correct pronunciation, intonation, inflection and syntax. Student Evaluation Plan: Quarter Grade: Tests 50% Quizzes 30% Daily Work 20% Semester Grade Based on 50% of each quarter in that semester Letter Grade Guidelines As per Yankton High School student handbook QUARTER ONE Goal One: Students will demonstrate knowledge of basic Spanish I concepts. 1. correctly use and spell basic classroom vocabulary. 2. identify and correctly use numbers through one hundred. 3. correctly express time to the hour and minute. 4. correctly form dates using days, months, years and seasons. 5. differentiate between definite and indefinite articles. Goal Two: Students will demonstrate knowledge of verb conjugations in the present tense. 6. accurately conjugate regular AR verbs. 7. accurately conjugate regular ER verbs. 8. accurately conjugate regular IR verbs. 9. accurately conjugate verbs with an irregular YO form (caber, caer, dar, hacer, poner, saber, salir, traer, valer, ver, etc.) 10. accurately conjugate verbs with more than one irregular form (ir, ser, estar, oír, decir, tener, venir, etc.) 11. accurately use tener idioms. 12. accurately conjugate stem-changing e-ie verbs. 13. accurately conjugate stem-changing o-ue verbs. 14. accurately conjugate stem-changing e-i verbs. 8

Goal Ten: Students will demonstrate knowledge of additional verb tenses. 45. correctly conjugate and use verbs in the perfect tense. (haber + past participle) 46. correctly conjugate and use the perfect tense with irregular past participles. 47. correctly conjugate and use the imperfect tense plus the three irregulars IR, SER and VER. 10

QUARTER FOUR Goal Thirteen: Students will demonstrate knowledge of additional verb tenses. 55. accurately conjugate and use regular verbs in the future tense. 56. accurately conjugate and use irregular verbs in the future tense. 57. accurately conjugate and use regular verbs in the conditional tense. 58. accurately conjugate and use irregular verbs in the conditional tense. 59. accurately conjugate and use present progressive tense with regular and irregular participles. 60. accurately conjugate and use past progressive tense with regular and irregular participles. 61. accurately conjugate verbs ending in CER and CIR in the present and past tense as well as in the singular and plural formal commands. Goal Fourteen: Students will demonstrate knowledge of Mexican culture. 62. discuss events surrounding Cinco de Mayo. 63. write an essay about the celebration of Cinco de Mayo using the Six Traits of Writing Model. 11

Yankton High School Course Syllabus Spanish III Course Description: In Spanish III the student will review the grammar, vocabulary, and syntactical structures of the Spanish language as well as reinforce the conversational and cultural themes studied in Spanish I and II. The course will also analyze and discuss the concepts presented in Spanish literature selections. Student evaluation Plan: Quarter Grade: Tests 50% Quizzes 30% Daily Work 20% Semester Grade: Based on 50% of each quarter in that semester Letter Grade Guidelines: As per Yankton High School student handbook QUARTER ONE Goal One: Students will demonstrate knowledge of present tense AR, ER, and IR verbs. 1. conjugate verbs in the present tense. 2. use the conjugated verbs in sentences and conversations. 3. correctly spell conjugated verbs. Goal Two: Students will demonstrate knowledge of vocabulary. 4. spell, pronounce and use correctly family words. 5. spell, pronounce and use correctly house words. 6. spell, pronounce and use correctly furniture words. 7. spell, pronounce and use correctly food and beverage words. 8. spell, pronounce and use correctly words that are confused. 9. spell, pronounce and use correctly body words. 10. spell, pronounce and use correctly clothing words. 11. spell, pronounce and use correctly color words. 12. express ideas in written form using the Six Traits of Writing Model. Yankton High School Course Syllabus AP Spanish Course Description: AP Spanish will offer to the fourth year foreign language student a progressive, thorough and challenging learning situation in the use of Spanish grammar, vocabulary, conversation and cultural themes as related to the Spanish-speaking world. The course will encompass oral skills, reading comprehension, grammar, and composition. The course will emphasize the use of Spanish in the AP curriculum with the following objectives: 1.
