December, 2016 Issue: 25 Gilroy Avenue, Edenderry. Phone 046 9731478 Email: bnsedenderry@gmail.com Website: http://www.edenderrybns.ie A Message From Our School Principal We are now drawing close to the end of what was a very busy first term in Edenderry Boys National School. On behalf of all the staff I would like to thank you, the parents for your continued support and wish you all a very happy Christmas and peaceful New Year. We look forward to welcoming everybody back on the 9 th of January! Parents Association Christmas Raffle Fundraiser There are some great prizes up for grabs this year in our Parents Association Christmas raffle which will be held next Wednesday 21 st December. Prizes include two fabulous hampers. Each child has a card selling lines for the raffle. Lines are 2 each. All cards must be returned to the school by Tuesday 20 th December. We would like to thank our Parents Association for organising the raffle and prizes and all parents who supported us by purchasing lines. We wish you all the very best of luck in the draw!

Science Week All classes were very busy throughout Science Week this year (November 14 th -18 th ). The theme for Science Week this year was light. A huge variety of experiments were undertaken by the boys during the week including mirror writing, disappearing coins, creating lava lamps and our very own traffic lights! On Friday 18 th of November, we held a science exhibition in our school hall where the boys had the opportunity to display their experiments to parents. A big well done to all the classes for creating their experiments and a big thank you to all the parents, guardians and neighbours for coming to see our demonstrations. The boys had great fun participating in Science Week and learned lots of interesting facts! We can t wait for next year! After School Clubs The homework clubs have been very busy since the start of the year! They are very popular and we have high numbers in all four groups. The homework clubs are finished now for 2016 and will resume again in the new year! Literacy Update As part of our ongoing work in Literacy improvements the entire school has been working on various writing genres. In October and November we were focused on report writing. All the boys in the school have completed wonderful reports on various animals, countries and people! Attached to this newsletter are some samples of our report writing. We hope you enjoy! Doodle For Google Competition This year our school took part in the Doodle for Google art competition. All boys had to complete a homepage logo design for Google. The theme this year was If I could create anything it would be We had eight overall school winners which have been submitted to Google! The eight talented winning pupils were Eoghan Ryan, Cillian Foran, Ruairí Hoolan, Daniel Tenuto, Danny Foran, Lorendas Dalangauskas, Jonathan Foran and Kaelum McCreanor. We certainly have very creative boys in our school!

Tag Rugby Blitz We held a tag rugby blitz in our school on Monday 5 th December. Patsy Gorman organised what was a very successful blitz between our school and Scoil Bhríde with 80 students in total participating. It was a very enjoyable day and we would like to thank Patsy for organising it. Credit Union Quiz Trials for this year s Credit Union Quiz teams will begin shortly so boys who are interested in being chosen should begin revising! We will be choosing four teams in total with two teams representing third and fourth class and two teams representing fifth and sixth classes. We have been very successful in this competition in the recent past and hope for continued success this year. Active School Update As part of our ongoing work in maintaining our Active School flag, we are continually encouraging all pupils to become more active! Specialist Teachers. This term a number of specialist teachers have been working with all the classes in improving physical fitness while having lots of fun! Edenderry s Adam Mahon shared his skills and knowledge of football with all classes for a number of weeks. As a result of the hugely successful link up with Edenderry Rugby Club, Patsy Gorman also spent a number of weeks coaching tag rugby to a number of classes and this will continue in the new year. We would like to thank Adam and Patsy for sharing their knowledge and skills with us and also for their time spent training the boys. Following our very successful Santa Dash last year we will again hold our Santa Dash on Thursday 22 nd of December! All the boys and teachers are encouraged to dress up in festive gear!

Christmas Plays Mrs Fox s and Mrs Loughlin s classes have been working harder than Santa s elves, practicing for their Christmas plays this year. They will perform their plays The Innkeeper s Breakfast and Ralph the Reindeer for parents on Tuesday 20 th December. The performance will commence at 10.15 a.m.. Decoration Time Every year we take great pride in decorating our school for the festive season. This year was no exception. Our Second and Third classes worked hard decorating our beautiful Christmas trees which are on display for all to see. Santa Claus On Wednesday 21 st December Santa Claus will be taking time out from his Christmas preparations to visit all the classes in the school. He will be talking to the teachers to update his naughty and nice lists too! National Concert Hall Visit On Monday 12 th December our 5 th and 6 th classes visited the National Concert Hall for a musical adventure performance from the RTE National Symphony Orchestra. It was an amazing experience for our boys seeing all the different parts of the orchestra and how they work together. Christmas Cards This year each boy had the opportunity to design and print his own professional Christmas Card and send these to friends and family! The finished products looked like real works of art. Christmas Eve Mass Due to the very large crowds at last year s Christmas Eve Mass this year there will be a Mass at 5.30pm for the children and families of students in both our school and Saint Mary s PS. The choirs of both schools will sing at the Mass.

Painting Workshop with Ian Jackson Our 5 th class had a very special treat this year when author and illustrator Ian Jackson visited our school. He showed them how to create stories using computers and Microsoft Paint. After they had created their pictures they were given the chance to tell their story to some of our younger classes. It was an excellent experience for all involved! We Are Mad About Music! Road Safety Talk Ciara from the Road Safety Authority came to our school and spoke to all classes about the importance of being safe on our roads. It was a very worthwhile talk and we hope that all of our students continue to remain safe and vigilant. School Choir The school choir has been very busy preparing for the Christmas season. On Sunday 4 th December, they sang at the Town Hall for the lighting of the tree. They did a wonderful job and created quite a festive atmosphere entertaining the large crowd. They also sang at the carol service in Saint Mary s Church last Thursday night 15 th December and will sing again at Christmas Eve mass. On Wednesday, 14 th December, the boys of our choir sang carols at various locations around the town. This was the 50 th consecutive year that the boys from our school under the direction of Seán Fitzgerald have been part of this tradition. They began at Castle View where there was a very large crowd out to listen to them. The next stop of the evening was in Blundell Wood where again a large crowd was present to welcome the boys. As the fog descended on us we sang outside Brady s Spar before finishing in Tesco. We would like to thank all the parents, students and residents who participated and came out to listen to us on the night. Our choir will also perform in our school hall as part of our Christmas show on Tuesday 20 th December. This performance begins at 10.15a.m..

Helping Others this Christmas Over the years we have been hugely fortunate to have tremendous support from parents and students in promoting our annual Christmas Shoebox appeal. This is a hugely worthy cause. This year proved to be no exception as we had a huge donation of shoeboxes which were collected from our school by members of Team Hope Ireland. We know that these small gifts will make a massive difference in the lives of the children that are less fortunate than us. We would like to say a big thank you to all the families that supported this undertaking. School Notices! Scoil Muire Banríon will close for the Christmas holidays at 12pm on Thursday 22 nd on Monday 9 th January 2017. December. We reopen We would like to wish all our students a safe and Happy Christmas!
